Sun goes down like it’s tired of the fight,
Mosquitoes hummin’ under every porchlight.

Mama says boy don’t stay out late,
But trouble cookin’ in an old iron gate.

Catfish skin on a cedar board,
Moonshine breath and a screen door chord.

You can smell that storm ‘fore it hits.
Yeah, you learn things quick where the mud don’t quit.

Everybody got a secret round here,
Buried in the heat and the whiskey and fear.

Bayou don’t lie, it just waits,
Lets you walk straight into your fate.
Water moves slow but it remembers names,
Bayou don’t lie, boy—it just plays games.

Saw her shoes by the cypress tree,
Didn’t see her eyes but I felt ‘em on me.

Cotton dress and a switchblade grin,
Lord help a man when the night caves in.

Gators roll where the shadows breathe,
Old men pray but they never leave.

Then the frogs start singin’ what the dark’s about.
