This encounter took place on a very special day: April 2nd in Argentina commemorates the victims of the Malvinas War, a bloody confrontation between the neoliberal government of Margaret Thatcher and the murderous Argentine dictatorship over British-occupied territory. 
RRRKRTA is a Polish DJ known for their highly influential party called Brutaż, this legacy still lives on thanks to the label of the same name, releasing club music by like-minded adventurous producers. In this Dj set, she uses the arts of mixing as complex witchcraft spinning the sound of an abandoned future for those keen to live it or abandon it for good.

Hi friends,

This week we continue our remote mix series, this time with a transmission from along the Nile: Cairo based DJ Sabrout mixed 90 mins of deep house for you, all right in the pocket and aimed at your heart.

I met Sabrout through friends of the label Erik & Moon on a night they’d put together at Jupiter Disco back in February. Sabrout was on before me and on his way back to Cairo the next day, where he was planning to get to the work of nurturing the scene that was budding in his city.  Things worked a bit differently in Egypt, he said, the authorities don’t love the parties and you had to be smart to not get yourself in a lot of trouble. But things were starting to happen - the people wanted this music,  and he wanted to be a part of getting it to them. I imagine that’s on pause for now, like a lot we love, but I sensed a drive in Sabrout that I don’t think will be extinguished this summer.

I woke up to this mix in my inbox on a recent Saturday, and took it out on my fire escape with a thermos of coffee.  Several weeks into this thing, legs hanging through the bars, gazing off. There’s space in this mix and propulsion over it. A lot of emotion too, but not nostalgic. Forward-facing. Odd as they’ve been, a new day was kicking off in my corner of the city, and this was the perfect soundtrack. Sun was out. Some voices nearby. Have you noticed the insects are coming back?
