Years back, I had been asked to play with a gig with Lack, an artist who I had been listening to and really began to admire, even emulate. When I met Phil, I asked if I could help him bring things into Win/Win on Spring Garden. He was quiet and very mild-mannered, which I attributed to my grating personality and worried I was bothering him. Thru the evening, after hearing an incredible set in a famously hard room to sound good in, I stood near Phil's merch table and told people which things to buy, as I had already become an ultra punisher of Lack fandom. Phil drank tea. I liked that.

Soon after, Phil asked that I make a record for his label Enmossed, that he painstakingly takes care of from his cabin in Maine. I was thrilled to make a whacked out record of blacked out VHS tapes melting, drum machine simplicity, and static that resembled a beat. Eventually, I made another tape for the same label, but by then Phil and I had become very close, speaking on a daily basis. He's someone I consider among my best friends. Since, Phil and I managed to play gigs together at other famously horrible rooms in Philadelphia and along the east coast (except Moon Villain in Boston and Brunner's apartment, that shit was the best.)

This is my first opportunity to return the favor. Phil has since dropped the Lack moniker and gone by his given name Glyn Maier. In the coming month of May 2021, with his remixes of the Silent Hill soundtrack (with a b side of nature processes layered on the original mix), I will get the fine opportunity to share this unbelievable ambient "mixtape."

Field recordings, samples from live performances, and a piano portion from an unreleased tape make up the whole of this tune. This may or may not appear on an album I’m working on. This made just be a standalone work for meditation in the trenches of working class seasonal depression.

We are in the swing of the heat, so I thought it best to post up this scorching mix from Cleveland-based Fana'. I met them at a event thrown here in Richmond and have since been floored by the mixes, original material, and overall energy they bring to the American electronic music landscape. Their release on Crisis Urbana a few months back was not only stellar, but had a place close to my heart because of the family I have developed with that label in particular and I was so happy to see another familiar face join the ranks of such talent. Their political fervor is also of pointed interest, dedicating much of the material to the strife endured by the oppressed and murdered of the Middle East, in particular the ongoing occupation of Palestinian and Kurdish lands. Tune into this one, burn some incense, make a strong pot of black tea, and have a hand-rolled cigarette.

MX08 - FANA'

Around the time that I moved into a street-level apartment in North Philly at 17th and Jefferson, literally the worst locale I have ever lived, I would spend hours on borrowed wifi with YouTube suggested algorithms feeding me music while I laid on my couch with my cats. There was one such instance that a tune popped up with extremely primitive, proto-techno sound so I got up to see whose track was playing. It turns out it was Shane English, a name I had been seeing more on flyers around the east coast and who I would eventually meet when he played as part of his duo Corporate Park at the Vat the same summer. Corporate Park was one of the best sounding and exciting acts and I had seen in a long while. I kept up with their work as well as the solo endeavors of Shane as well as Jonah Lange, the other half of CP. 
Now, in 2019, Shane has released several records on LIES as well as having a hand in the groundbreaking comp Eminent Domain, a catalog of the recent American underground. The project was large in scope with multiple pressings in different wax colors, posters, and multi-fold jackets. It was extremely impressive. 
Aside from his capable productions, Shane is also a renowned collector of obscure musics and media. On this mix, he pulled out tapes and records from the more relatable content of Vox Populi! and delves deeper into strange French and Italian electronics. It is a rare treat to host a mix of material in which you are new to the things you are hearing and I hope this acts as a learning experience for us all.

MX13 - Shane English's Perpetual Midnight Shift Mix

In the winter of 2019, I sat down with Carl Ritger in his home studio and spent the afternoon working on recordings for modular synth and guitar. Aside from having performed with one another at UC Boulder in the fall of 2017 we had not performed or recorded with one another before.
   It is finally getting cool in the northeast and this feels like a fitting soundtrack for the time. Synth manipulation by Radere, guitar by Chaperone. This precedes the newest Radere record "I Do Not Want What I Have" set to be released on Great Circles as an album pressing this year. This album is download enabled.

I took a short break with the mixes to hammer out some other projects I had swirling around and to ride my bike entirely too much, but Blissing Persons is back and I am happy to be posting a mix from a new friend, Simonowsky from the Black Lodge collective in LA, who reached out to me with a mix that hit the spot perfectly. 

Matt hails from just outside of Chicago and pins his interest in DJing to his interest in UK material around the age of 18. With a little bit of reverse engineering, listening to material from the English underground lead him to listening to music from his own background, sparking a love affair with house and techno born out of the 2nd city.

With experience in stage management and having spent some time working for Ron Trent's manager, a move to LA and linking up with the Black Lodge folks in 2014 was an easy transition; helping book gigs, and getting some legs on the record label/production end of things.

What really grabbed me is the attempt to achieve alleviation from the dread and panic of anxiety and depression by using drone and meditative music. Matt practices yoga and meditation to make his way through what many of us struggle with, and I have been vocal in the past about my own issues with anxiety and how music is one of my few outlets to fight it. Matt has done an excellent job in this case, and this mix is a testament to the great work he is doing on the west coast. Go to some parties of theirs, but first, listen to these jams.

This entire set was made using tape techniques, an open window, a passing storm, neighbors moving in and out of the building, local birds, delivery trucks, and furniture scuffling in the front room of my first floor apartment in Ridgewood. Notable influences on this recording are Yuzuru Agi, Tolerance, Dome, Good Area, Jah Shaka, and Alvin Lucier. Download enabled.

Black Power Ambience was made during a time of great stress for us as Black people. This was around the time of Korey Gaines, Sandra Bland, Philando Castile, Mike Brown, Tamir Rice, Trayvon Martin, Eric Garner and countless others. The Eric Garner one hit especially hard for me, having gone to school in that area. Eric was someone I had always seen around the way and on the day he was killed I had just arrived back home. I walked past the scene and saw the lights and just figured it was the usual, I didn't know what happened until I got to my friends house up the block. All of this death broadcasted on the internet was a constant stream of trauma and it became heavy fast. It's nothing new to me, the idea that my life could end violently has always been in my mind. I wonder what it's like to not think like that?

So during all this my good friend Dave asked me to perform at one of his shows. At the time I was only rapping so I had to make something that would fit the bill.

This is how Black Power Ambience was born. My feelings are captured in it, and the vocal samples from my ancestors serve as a connection to the things that matter. I hope you enjoy it, I know I still do to this day. It gave me relief and I am thankful to the field for giving me the chance to channel this energy this way. Enjoy
