The setting is in Montreal, winter of 2010 where, following long nights locked in a smoky basement, Abigail de Burgh Galwey (singer), Rudolph Chevalcha (pianist) and former A&B member Nick Hynes (guitarist, Bran Van 3000) find their creative light. The chemistry emanating from these three souls in search of a vehicle for expression becomes evident when, jam after jam, ideas weld and take form. It is then impossible to ignore this emerging identity engraving these new sonic landscapes into time and space. And then there was Bliss; a trio making its beginnings as a studio project but who very quickly feels the need to share on stage the same visceral energy that inhabits their nocturnal improve sessions. By associating themselves with solid musicians such as Laurent Saint-Pierre (drummer)and Donald O'Brien (bassist) that Bliss can finally share the product of this universe.

The ever shape shifting, critically hailed Hercules & Love Affair return with brand new album In Amber, to be released on 17th June 2022 via Skint/BMG.

“Across this record, there are emotional fields I hadn’t ventured into previously with Hercules & Love Affair,” says Butler. “Destruction, rage, loss, but also redemption and journeying towards empowerment are all touchstones on the album. It has taken years to make, but I am happy to put it forward now, at a moment in time where we have all been confronted with such heightened feelings collectively and on an unprecedented scale”.

Reuniting with ANOHNI for the first time since her stellar turn on the eponymous debut in 2008 (which undeniably produced one of the most beloved dance tunes of the oughts “Blind”) proved key to this process. Both share a love and deep respect for music of a more aggressive bent, zig zagging from grindcore like Godflesh and Bolt Thrower, via electronic avant-garde like Throbbing Gristle and Cabaret Voltaire to female fronted punk and metal like Sacrilege, Fear of God and Diamanda Galas.  On the other end of the spectrum, they have an equally intense appreciation for darker ethereal acts such as This Mortal Coil and Dead Can Dance. In Amber reflects this wide swathe of emotion and sound.

However weirdly I came to hear of Queen Kwong is overshadowed by the fact that she’s managed to hold my attention for so long. Queen Kwong is the brainchild of LA based musician Carré Callaway.  Her rawness and charisma remind me of a young Iggy Pop or Patti Smith at the peak of their careers. Queen Kwong’s volatile stage persona, no doubt sits in the lineage of such primal and visceral acts as The Stooges, Nirvana, Swans, even Queens of the Stone Age. 

Her songs and stage show are a blatant protest at the “sanitization” of Rock in recent years. Queen Kwong’s work stands out from the sea of rubbish I keep hearing on the radio. Carre embodies the true and uncompromising spirit of Rock.  This LA based musician’s unwillingness to play it safe is rare and admirable. Someone very wise once taught me the importance of metaphorically, “passing on the torch”.  I say with utmost sincerity that Queen Kwong deserves that torch more than any performer I’ve come across in the last decade.
