Errant thoughts of a January night (Quando Orion dal clielo...)

This week's Disquiet Junto suggested a drone made for the daytime. 

I started with a field recording from my front window. I took the first clean 4 minutes of that, and discovered a lone cicada singing around the 3:30 mark. This is the first cicada I've heard in the neighborhood this year. I supplemented that field recording with some crows that I captured in Virginia a few years ago.

The drone was recorded in a single take on a slide steel guitar with ebow and a collection of pedals. Underneath it all is a sample of a ceramic drum.

The title is taken from the Wikipedia entry for cicadas, describing them as being able to blend in with their surroundings. You can experience this for yourself with a good pair of headphones.

To me drones in daylight suggest, obviously, brightness but perhaps also a kind of straightforward simplicity and purity. For me, the sine wave rendered in the major scale represents these qualities. Hence this track is the result of a one lone sine wave oscillator tuned to the C-major scale. There is of course lots of looping and over looping and the requisite reverb.

Recorded & mixed on 19 & 20 Sep 2024 by Jim Lemanowicz at Blissville Electro-Magnetic Laboratories of Massapequa. 

Process notes -
For this, I put together a 4 track piece in FL Studio and exported stems on Thursday and then reworked those stems along with an altered piece of the full mix in Ableton Live on Friday. 

While I was in FL, I edited 32/16 patterns into 29/16 and also some other time sigs. I tried to keep it minimal, which also makes it a bit harder to count out but in the spirit of the prompt’s description, I enjoy the ambiguity.

Wrote this after being challenged by my Auntie Jan to write a positive song...

Jan, has been a special spiritual guide for me throughout my life so I needed to make it as close to her heart as I could. Jan believes strongly we should project positivity into the world so sometimes when I share my music with her, like my worried AI tune, Symbiosis, she turns into Obi Wan and I feel like Anikan Skywalker getting told off. It's a pretty epic relationship I have with her.

I tuned my keyboard E6 to 639Hz and this resonates throughout the piece ♾️ {also it's octave 1278Hz-bar 9♾️ & + octave 2556Hz bar 17♾️} This is the heart solfeggio frequency. The words imagine us as spheres of energy, I suppose like Divinci represents symmetrically with his famous design.

These two videos were enough to justify the ideas and feel I was singing about something real! I don't think I can sing about something otherwise..

The song is 77 full bars long. This is paying homage to my Uncle, Dick who passed away last week. He was 77 years young. So nicely, one bar for each year he was on Earth. Thanks Dick for finally teaching me what you tried to. Rest in Peace and I love you 🧘

Science as a collective has only.really.poked at the ideas so far and those scientists that have seem to find something which fills some gaps.... if you take a big leap... this could reopen doors to the possibility of an afterlife.... The name Kardia is paying homage to Elpiverse. Just before I began writing this song, for most of the day I wished SoundCloud had repeat for the first time... (Eh have since been shown how to repeat by Elpiverse 🙈 🕺) Her first song is incredible and really warmed my heart. Kardia can mean the heart of your energy in Greek. Or to quote one of the two angels that inspired this piece, Elpiverse, who kindly took the time to leave a lovely comment...

In a change from my usual live method this track was very much assembled. That said each synth element was improvised in conjunction with and added to the existing material as the track evolved. 

I started by taking a long ambient drone (Borrowed from another project), generated with Points And Lines* and processed it through the Free Ghost  Radio VST plugin from Quilcom to produce the short wave radio like sounds, details here: (it's near the end of the list): https://flowstoners.com/quilcom

Then in conjunction with that I assembled the field recordings that open the track. A bit of a mish-mash,

With the opening set I then recorded the rhythmic pulses and sequences using a small virtual modular VCV Rack patch that I'd prepared earlier. With that done I went back and added the synth surf, separate VCV patch, synth wind, Bento* and random chirps and synth whales to swim in the synthetic sea, Creature From Then ID.*

My Nana gave me my first ever piano lesson. I remember it like a video. in this song I used the speed finger/thumb cross over technique she showed me early on. I think of her "Every time" I do it 😊

The song itself was triggered by something Aileen said to me yesterday. I showed her a pic of my Nana for no other reason that she has the same name just a letter off... I was made to realize that I keep my Nana's pic and Grandads book of poetry beside me in the studio all the time. So they do actually shine down on me everyday. Before I showed it to Aileen I just did it... but she made me realize what it has actually meant and what it will continue to mean going forward..
