Fast Forward Audio Series #9: Aske Lund Rønde

Hailing from Seattle, Korean-American artist @fugal expresses both dynamism and nuance. As part of the @secondnatureseattle collective, he’s one of the driving forces behind a string of renowned events in Seattle and the US, as well as an impressive young label which has seen contributions from fellow secondnature residents @archivistseattle and @simictacoma, along with @smoreira and Svreca (@semantica-records).

Now based in Berlin, Fugal has continued to refine his rhythmic, emotive sound, with gigs across Berlin and abroad. On the production front, 2017/18 has proven to be a fruitful period, with a recent co-release with Archivist on @volte_face_bleed’s BleeD imprint, and his sophomore secondnature release coming up in mid-February.

With his contribution to the Patterns of Perception mix series, Fugal has taken a measured approach, veering away from more functional dancefloor sounds, and instead drawing inspiration from the warmth found amongst the grey Berlin winter. Toeing the line between experimental sounds and deep techno, Fugal’s mix delves into the intricate - focusing on musical phrases and creative transitions between widely varying tempos.

They are defined by the culture surrounding them, while simultaneously defining that same culture. Never hesitant to drift into fascinating new unexplored territories, he has managed to finesse his way into the global spotlight with records on imprints such as Delsin, Echochord, and Mojuba. His familiarity and expertise in the realm of ambient and modern classical have made him a ripe pick for the heart of our summer mix series. Enjoy alone or with friends, but always in the sun.

Volcanoes spewing freshly bloomed flowers. Trees with roots in the clouds. These are the impressions conjured up by our next guest, who is an artist who works as much with imagery as he does sound. Cosmin Nicolae, aka Cosmin TRG, has been churning out sonic excellence for more than a decade. With a recent album on the illustrious Opal Tapes, as well as another one on his own Fizic imprint, he has executed his ambient foray with great success. Remaining aware of how society tends to break everything down for its own uses, he moves forward with an awareness of ambient's originally sacred place in the lives of those who have helped culminate it.  This awareness, combined with his nuanced production, made him a ripe pick for our podcast series. Since his humble beginnings, he has become a regular at Berghain and created one of the most followed techno meme accounts, technothegathering, where he uses his humor and knowledge of magic cards to socially critique and mirror the happenings of the underground music scene. His sets are equally critical in that they exemplify a taste that does not follow any trends, but rather a genuine spirit focused on music for music's sake.
