Versatility and virtuosity are the common threads woven into her productions, such as her recent album with Unrush founder Mareena Altas Der Gedanken on Muzan Editions. The same can be said for her mix here, which features everything from traditional southern Laotian music to øjeRum and Steve Roach. As a close friend and collaborator of Unrush, her contribution is long overdue. Disillusionment with the systems of power and the current state of the world has led to a rich breeding ground for new ideas, new pathways, and new ways of being. In this spirit, Unrush presents their next compilation, Rush of Communion Vol. 2. A collection of tracks from friends and collaborators, it embodies the musical path forward, clarity of mind, strength of heart, and visions for a better world. 

As with the last compilation, all proceeds will once again go to the Detroit Justice Center, which is a national nonprofit organization that pays bail for people in need, reuniting families and restoring the presumption of innocence. In a time when police violence and racism are as rampant as ever, it is crucial to do what is possible to help those in need. To achieve this peaceful vision of the future, internal syncopation and harmony are essential. This serene and playful collection of tracks enables just that, bringing solace to the collectively troubled mind.

The initial spark of creativity resides deep within us like a seed, waiting for water and warmth before germinating into a floral wonder. Our next guest is a rather fine gardener in this sense, having cut his teeth for 10 years in the Berlin underground before flourishing into the internationally renowned artist he is today. At this point, Rødhåd is an artist who hardly needs an introduction. Launching his party series-turned-label Dystopian in 2009, he undoubtedly helped facilitate the musical landscape of modern-day Berlin with his uncompromising vision of techno. Known for his infectious smile and ginger personality, he has won many hearts and minds with his selections and productions ever since his humble beginnings. 

With his new label, WSNWG, he has entered a new chapter of collaborative synergy and fluid audio-visual exploration, releasing his first full-length ambient album MOOD as well as tracks with Ø [PHASE], Lady Starlight, and Antigone among others. It is in this spirit that we have asked him for a contribution to Unrush, and his mix does not disappoint. Clocking in at just over an hour, it takes us through sweeping valleys of sound, whispers of content, and everything in between. Anyone who has dived into the murky world of underground electronic music has undoubtedly come across The Bunker New York, which has established itself as much more than a party thanks to Kasenic's dedicated hard work. Through years of careful curation, renowned events, records, and podcasts, The Bunker has evolved into a community founded on connection through otherworldly music. 

With the launch of the sublabel Going In in 2020, Kasenic decided to promote the realms of long-form music compositions suited for more meditative moments. With 14 releases to date, he has transformed his devotion to alternative musical forms into reality. His Unrush contribution is a palpable display of this passion, turning his prowess as an experienced selector into a ruminative passage of sound that transcends time and space. Rumination, reflection, return. Such is the vernacular of winter, a moment to exhale, to glance behind as well as ahead. To commemorate this precious time we have a very special guest this month. Slam are so integral to electronic music culture that they hardly need an introduction. With over 100 releases under their belt, they have enthused the eager ears of their audience for over three decades and are still going strong today. Their label, Soma Records, has established itself as a consistent output of world-class music, while their weekly podcast series, Slam Radio, is arguably one of the most respected around. 

Normally found roaming the rougher-tinged arenas of music with harsh, jacking rhythms, here they have smoothed out their sound and gone down an alternative path. Serving as the first half of a two-part mix, Slam have once again showcased the breadth of their musical knowledge. Soaring through valleys of angelic synths and sighing strings, they arrive at a place at once familiar and yet completely foreign, concealed through passages of morphing, static noise. A truly engaging listen, and one perfectly fitting for this current moment of restless tranquility.

061 - Unrushed by Slam (Part 1)

Unrush founder Mareena has been very busy since her last in-house contribution to the series. Her collaboration with JakoJako on Muzan Editions stunned listeners with its bright palette and nocturnal nuance, while their contribution to the Tresor Records 30 Years Compilation solidified this collaboration as a project to watch. Both of these releases displayed the refinement of her production skills, where her dedication to modular synthesis has transpired into a palpable passion for discovering new sonic pathways. It's safe to say Mareena is no longer just an adept DJ, but also a versatile producer as well. 

Unrush itself has grown too. With over 60 mixes and 4 compilations released to date, the series has expanded to include a broad family of artists and shows no signs of slowing down. To celebrate these achievements, we are pleased to present Mareena's fourth mix for the series, where she gracefully weaves the past into the future, giving us a glimpse of what is to come.

Synthetic and organic forms twist and stretch around one another like vines, spiraling into a double helix of texture and tone. Such is the kind of world that our next guest, Richard Fearless, conjures up with his enigmatic expression of electronic music. Everflowing, ever-evolving, and never boring, he has established himself as a true pioneer as both a selector and producer. As part of the band Death in Vegas, he founded the label DRONE in 2004 where he then continued on to release his first album Transmission in 2016. Since then, Fearless has been busy at work bending genres and mastering the art of synthesis.

Clocking in at over an hour, this mix is rather a live recording made up entirely of his own productions. A playful, experimental and thoroughly engaging listen that takes us deep into his world. Occasionally when two creative forces cross paths, the result can be an enigmatic exchange of pure inspiration, a web of connections that continually grows with imaginative impulses firing off like synapses in every direction. Such was the case when Unrush-founder Mareena and her dear friend Resom began collaborating at the end of 2020. The resulting project, entitled M2N2, was born as a result of their shared love for all things ambient, with both possessing an extensive catalog of records that spans all of the genre's many facets. Their first appearances solidified the collaboration as a worthy endeavor, with well-received contributions to the CCC Online Festival and gigs in Mexico at the Cervantino Festival in Guanajuato and the Hertzflimmern Event in Mexico City. 

For this month's Unrush mix we are presented with a recording clocking in at just over 2 hours where the two friends playfully react and interact with one another, digging deep into the corners of their respective collections. A glimmer of sunlight can go a long way to overcome darkness. As we reach the peak of summer, we thought it appropriate to invite our dear friend Sirko Müller back to contribute another of his classic vinyl dub mixes for those long days in the sun. As one of the founding members of Tokomak Records company, he is well known for his diverse sound, steeped in the rich history of Detroit where he draws a lot of his influence. More recently, Müller has also been putting on regular dub radio shows along with Stojche, Oracy (Don Williams) and Francesco Devincenti at the excellent d59b bar as “Dribbling". This mix similarly serves as a celebration of everything dub, with a careful and tasteful selection that spans the genre's history. As we begin to notice those first flickers of Fall, it beckons a new phase of reflection. A meditation on the power of silence. Those spaces between the notes which can often be more important than the notes themselves. Our next guest understands this power well and has utilized it throughout his almost 30-year career to astonishing effect. 

Rolando, at this point, should need little introduction. A former member of Underground Resistance, he has since gone on to start his own R3 imprint and hold residencies at both Berghain and Rex Club in Paris. His music has deep roots in Detroit where he grew up, permeating through his lifeblood as an artist. Normally known for his inclination towards building and maintaining an infectious groove, he uses that same skill here but without the pummeling presence of the kick drum. Rather, he guides us along with percussive pads and ethereal musings in this special 2-hour edition of UNRUSH.

Deconstructed and disintegrated becomes energy and evolution. So the cycle continues, endlessly. Our next guest, Golden Medusa (aka Lara Golz), has managed to embody this process musically, a suitable tribute for our current moment. Known for her beguilingly ingenious sets as a resident of Leisure System and Refuge Worldwide, Lara's artistic trajectory has developed concurrently with the eclectic and unpredictable undertow of the Berlin music scene. Since the beginning of her career in 2016, she has made regular appearances at Berghain, OHM, and notorious events like Herrensauna and Atonal Festival. However, it wasn't until we invited her to play at the Ambientgarden events we did in collaboration with Staub at ://about blank in 2020 that we discovered the extent of her ambient ambitions. Here Lara shows us again that she can plunge into the depths, providing us with a two-hour mix of oceanic inoculation.

A lush current of kinetic energy pulsates underneath you, enveloping you until you forget your body has edges. Such is the sensation one gets when listening to our next guest, Sunju Hargun. Based out of Bangkok, he spends his time DJing and co-running the imprint Siamese Twins Records, which is focused on exposing upcoming talent from Asia and acts as a platform for exploring everything from ceremonial chants to Bollywood-inspired acid. 

As a selector and curator, Sunju's inexplicable ability to meld cultures, rhythms, and timbres has earned him a respected reputation at home and abroad. In fact, it was at their gig together in Leipzig at Institut für Zukunft that Unrush founder Mareena and him realized they were both fans of each other. In this spirit of musically-bonded friendships, it was only natural to have him contribute to the series. Let yourself dissipate into the mist with this ambient masterclass from Sunju Hargun.

Dark times call for dark music. There is something about the cold catharsis of winter that inspires our next guest, Eònan. Making a name for himself in the caverns of Berlin over the last half-decade, he has carved out his niche through a series of timbre-filled techno trips for his Lucidmind imprint. However, it was his ambient mix for the same label which showcased a more sanguine side to his taste and thereby caught our ear. Here he has once again amassed a monolith of musicality, illuminating a path forward through the longest nights.

Rising from our collective slumber we embrace the new year refreshed and ready for new sonic territory. Our first guest of the year, Occa, hails all the way from Japan where he has made a name for himself throwing parties in Sapporo and DJiing at established events such as Labyrinth Festival and Future Terror. After meeting him and seeing what we deemed one of our favorite sets of 2022, it was only natural to invite him to contribute to UNRUSH. His style is expansive and possesses an air of experimental elegance, combining sonorous harmonies with washes of nocturnal noise and faint, mesmerizing melodies. Mary Yuzovskaya made a name for herself in the mid-2000s by showcasing a deep passion for vinyl, with her razor-sharp precision mixing resonating throughout Berlin and beyond. Since then she has come a long way, relocating to New York where she started her own Monday Off imprint and podcast to showcase the poignant psychedelia inherent to her musical world. Here she showcases the more intimate corners of her collection with the same care and attention to detail that she is known for. Imagine a thin film of transparent silk slowly lifted down over your conscious mind, imbuing everything you experience with a serene timelessness. Such is the sensation our next guest, ATAVEM, has delivered with this special hybrid mix, infusing his own material and field recordings into a carefully selected collection of drone and experimental music. 

A resident at the renowned club [PAL] in Hamburg where he co-founded the STRAP event series, he has been enticing audiences with his special brand of ethereal techno for years. Known for making ambient "tools" that are then weaved between mixes, here he lets the tools be pieces in their own right, delicately whisking the listener off to unknown places. So take a break from your screen, dim the lights, and enter a sense of deep time with this perfectly concocted hybrid set from ATAVEM.

Subatomic, subaquatic particles bubble up to the surface while you seep into a dark blue void. Such is often the sensation one gets while listening to our next guest, Daniel[i]. His music has a distinct oceanic quality that can be as riveting as it is serene. With releases on labels such as Norite, Lowless, and his own Whispering Signals imprint, he has carved out a niche for himself among deep techno and ambient fans alike. After releasing one of his tracks on the last Unrush compilation, it was only a matter of time until we had him on for a mix. Here has prepared an hour-long live ambient set, exemplifying the true nature and depth of his sound. So put on your diving gear, get your airtank filled up, and let yourself sink to the bottom of the ocean...

As we welcome in the serene green of summer we are reminded how crucial it is to diversify our experiences, perspective, and sound. Therefore we have prepared a proper tribute with four hours of UK Street Soul, laid down by the masterful hands of Finn Johannsen. Inspired by an early thirst for the underground pirate radio culture that permeated throughout disused locations in the UK, this mix is a head first dive into a particular era of music that continues to resonate deeply today. Keeping busy as co-owner of Macro Recordings and working at Hard Wax, Johannsen has developed a particular knack for pulling out life affirming gems at just the right time, massaging the mind into the kind of fluid state that we like to propagate. Part the clouds and play it loud!

"This mix goes back to what I liked to listen to about thirty years ago, when not in the mood for rushing music. I always loved a sweet Soul vocal, the bass weight of Dub and a dope Hip Hop beat, and thankfully there were a lot of great tunes around at that time that combined those elements, particularly in the UK. Most notably The Wild Bunch and Smith & Mighty in Bristol as well as Soul II Soul in London merged UK sound system culture with Jamaican Lovers Rock and American Hip Hop and R&B sounds in the late 80s, and their success led to a vibrant underground scene that was tagged UK Street Soul, or UK Club Soul. As with other UK Breakbeat styles, UK Street Soul was mainly a fiercely independent white label culture, the music produced with very basic equipment and mostly amateur vocalists, and spread across country via hundreds of illegal pirate radio stations in towerblock squats and similarly disused locations. I used to tune in to the pirates on trips to the UK as much as I could, envious of the determination and underground spirit with which the network broadcasted their sweet and raw sounds against a grim reality and looming prosecution by the authorities. The sound is still resonating with current club music, but as the stations originally airing it, the producers originally creating it and the labels originally releasing it a lot of it has just vanished. This mix is intended as a tribute to a pirate radio UK Street Soul show. It contains some obscure gems and some better known gems from the UK and US, and is probably best listened to through booming car speakers or headphones, or at home while getting ready for the club, or in the setting described in the last song: and look at the view from your balcony, London through your eyes. No one but you to keep me company, twenty floors up a high-rise. After all, it is still Soul, and so it is mainly about love. But make sure to play it LOUD."

Wanderwelle are a duo from Amsterdam who have been making waves with exquisitely executed releases on the dub-drenched Silent Season imprint. About the release:

We live in a complicated age. As the global population rises, the demand for work increases, while the possibilities dwindle. This is further exacerbated when governments turn inwards, destroying their own people. For these reasons among many others, it is now more critical than ever that we approach our fellow human beings with a sense of compassion, understanding, and helpfulness. 

Our mission at Unrush has always been to help unravel the stresses of daily life. Whether it be through our monthly podcasts or our event series in Berlin, we have continually aimed to alleviate the complications inherent in simply existing. With the launch of The Unrush Tapes, we have now decided to do something palpable in order to share the music we love while simultaneously relieving some of the real, serious problems that burden people's lives. Therefore, all profits from this tape will go to help4people in Berlin e.V., a non-profit charity dedicated to seeing the successful integration of the much overlooked African immigrants in Berlin. 

Musically we have turned to many past Unrush contributors for their generous offerings, including Wanderwelle, Shaded Explorer, Katya Yonder, Bleak, Sirko Mueller, 3KZ, John Heckle and many others. With a textural palate to match the diversity of mankind, there is a subtle narrative that forms throughout the compositions. 033 - Unrushed by Fingers In The Noise

Once again the team at Unrush has gathered their energy and spirits, putting together a dazzling array of ambient excursions from artists otherwise known for their techno, house, and electro cuts. As with the last cassette, the focus here is on showcasing new works and channeling the result into diminishing some of the strains on people's lives, with all proceeds going to help4people in Berlin. 

This cassette sees the debut of Unrush founder Mareena, who has worked in collaboration with JakoJako to make a poignant piece entitled "Füreinander", which translates to "For each other". Indeed this is the spirit of what Unrush does, providing a safe musical space for others to explore. This disposition remains throughout the selections, with appearances from electro giants such as The Exaltics, Plant 43, Dez Williams, and Kuldaboli, all of which provide an exquisitely elaborate palate of tones, moods, and rhythms. Irakli, Artefakt, and Tomi Chair all step away from rhythm entirely and instead traverse a more pastoral plane, both in light and in darkness. Berlin mainstay Stojche brings his unique blend of seasoned downtempo house, while newcomers Carlota and Atariame round out the release with something completely different altogether. 

Taken together, this collection of tracks is an ode to the quiet moments where truth shines in. Where you see between the cracks of your life and gaze upon the interconnectedness of everything around you. Take it in and feel yourself Unrush.

With stress becoming a ubiquitous factor in our everyday lives, the need to tune into something more serene grows. This is something Unrush founder Mareena is aware of, which is why she has personally prepared an hour of lush, tender atmospherics to ease us out of this worried world and into the present moment of endless tranquillity. Mareena's passion for music is contagious, and her mixes exemplify this as much as her curatorial prowess. She blends elements almost as if she was the forest floor, supporting the sprouting buds with essential nutrients while letting the old-growth be seen in all its glory. As we collectively take a moment to ruminate and ponder an uncertain future, the music stays with us, guiding us through the sullen seclusion of the moment. Our next guest Andrey PUSHKAREV has a particular way of wrapping the listener in an endless blanket of warm resonant chords, slowly subduing them into a contemplative trance. Hailing from the hardened landscapes of Russia, he has made a name for himself as a top purveyor of deep, dubby grooves that uplift into insight. Using music as a medium, he externalizes the infinite complexities of his reality into a simple yet all-encompassing passage of sound. The result is as captivating as it is comforting, and we are very pleased to present this spring edition of UNRUSH from the maestro himself.

In times such as these, it is imperative that we swiftly come together as a community to stand in solidarity with the oppressed and amplify the voices of the unheard. The time for action is now, and musicians have a responsibility to acknowledge and pay tribute to the rich heritage of the music we hold so dear. Therefore the Unrush team has asked friends and collaborators to contribute some stunning musical works to the first edition of The Unrush Files. Entitled "Rush of Communion", this various artists compilation embodies a collective effort to support those who are fighting at the front lines, risking everything to facilitate lasting and meaningful change in a fundamentally unjust society. 

All proceeds from this compilation will be donated to the Detroit Justice Center, which is a national nonprofit organization that pays bail for people in need, reuniting families and restoring the presumption of innocence. This essential work can not be understated, as police have arrested more than 10,000 peaceful protesters who were speaking out against systemic racism in response to the killing of George Floyd. It is only when we work together, by both looking inwards and lending our efforts outwards, that we can begin to manifest a new world built on the principles of equality and justice.

As co-founder of the now-defunct MNML SSGS blog and event series and a resident at the semi-regular Sound Garden chill out parties, he has spread his infectious love for boundless forms of music far and wide, reaching audiences across the globe. After hearing his acclaimed mixes for podcasts such as Electronic Exploration and Mysteries of the Deep, we are ecstatic to have him contribute to UNRUSH. U N R U S H is an experiment in sound, a crystalline vision of eternal pause. Through our record label, podcasts, interviews, and event series we focus on presenting a diverse array of alluring ambient music. With each guest contribution we search for a serene space within the mind that is free from the encumbering stresses of daily life. Our seasonal event series will act as a platform for distinguished artists who we feel can channel the unique and ineffable beauty brought forth by each season. They will take place in stunning cultural surroundings both in the city and in nature, taking a step away from the pounding hedonism of the club to showcase the other side of electronic music.
