The recording from one of my favourite sets last year ~ Transcendence Festival in Japan 🌲🇯🇵

I’ve long been drawn to the deep, organic and electrifying techno of Japan–inextricably linked to open-air gatherings deep in the forest–so it was very special to play this set in the mystical woods of Nagano’s mountains.

I played after Japanese wizard OCCA @oooccaaa, from 11.30PM-2AM ~ descending into the night and far beyond ✧.*｡⋆

Deepest thanks to @takumiinamoto1994 and @djmaria-jp for the invitation to join this gathering of likeminded musical souls, I am very grateful to have shared this experience with friends old + new 🫶

A lesson in rhythm from a former De School resident.

When it comes to minimalist dance music, Ruben Üvez, AKA Konduku, is one of the best in the game right now. With a masterful and ever-shapeshifting understanding of rhythm, the Berlin-based artist crafts sublime dance music with a staunchly leftfield bent. Don't just take our word for it: how many DJs, after all, can claim to have moved De School to a puddle of tears?

Musically, Üvez is hard to pin down. He's often billed as a techno artist, but actually you'll find his sound sits outside of the genre's many conventions. With an outsider's curiosity, he leans into diverse moods, tempos and genres, though one throughline is always how he arranges his drums. Whether it be deep, Nobu-core techno such as 2023's Hayal EP or UK beat science á la Peverelist on 2019's  Gegek, he leads with rhythm across his DJing and production. The end product is a hypnotic, one-of-a-kind sound that hits the body before the brain has time to catch up. In short, it slaps.

As Üvez's RA Podcast demonstrates, he's got a serious knack for crafting and selecting tunes that can  deeply captivate a dance floor. Clocking in at just over 90 minutes, RA.967 is an excursion through a timeless sound, packed with long, layered blends, flick-of-the-wrist transitions, locked grooves and spine-tingling atmospherics. In 2020, we called Ruben Üvez one of techno's brightest new talents. This mix sees him ascending to a seat at the top table.

For this set I wanted to dive into the realms of lucid dreaming, halftime~trippy~swirly~music for late night driving and moonlit astral travel ~ 

Whilst playing this set it started snowing heavily, and when I stepped outside after the show there was 10cm of snow on the ground! So this mix is also a soundtrack for the soft-coldness of nighttime snowfall 🌙

Erik Luebs is a US-born musician and sound designer based in Japan. Eschewing typical genre tropes, Luebs approaches techno with a playfully disruptive technique, reinterpreting the fundamentals using built-from-scratch patches and labyrinthine sequencing. While the labor-intensive process is inspired by a wide range of luminaries such as Mark Fell and Rrose, the resulting music is firmly tied to the dance floor.

Luebs engages in minimal promotion, focusing his efforts instead on producing a series of monthly singles on Bandcamp. Through word of mouth, his unconventional approach to dance music has led to releases on labels such as The Bunker New York, Nous'klaer Audio, performances at DJ Nobu's Future Terror party in Japan and at Draaimolen Festival in Holland.

Contributing our latest episode is London’s ANNX, a regular figure within the city’s cutting-edge undercurrent whose many contributions include co-curation of the Whomp, Perspectives, and once-shrouded Magick events, and a residency at the beloved Above Below festival. Anna’s tireless dedication to the scene goes hand-in-hand with her unmistakable talent behind the decks, as evidenced by an impressive repertoire of mixes and set recordings, and which I was fortunate enough to witness first-hand last summer in the Chilterns. Here Anna demonstrates her well-honed craft over the course of two meticulously plotted hours, diving seamlessly into manifold forms of deep, heavy psychedelia before emerging in a wave of euphoric bliss. Dino Sabatini is recognized as the inciter of Italian techno scene and main character of labels such as: Elettronica Romana – Prologue – Stroboscopic Artefacts – Sonic Groove. Also known as part of the duo Modern Heads, 2006/2007 he released may sussessful Eps: “Paper Toys”, “Ordinary Madness” and “Gliding” are just a few pearls of a style which is now one the most followed and have been inspiring many artists from the international techno scene.
