Valencia's Nacho Marco has an incredibly impressive back catalogue, with releases on brilliant labels including Freerange, Plastic City, Lazy Days, Ovum, We Play House and his own excellent Loudeast imprint too. Now added to the list is the irrepressible Chiwax, with his “The 909 Files" EP. 

Each track is simply titled 'File 1' through to “File 4“, so let's kick things off in the usual order. "File 1“ is a powerhouse of percussion and keys, with an almost Reese-esque bassline rumbling underneath. The weight of the kicks and the metronomic rattle of the rimshots thunders the track along, making this a very impressive opener. 

“File 2" slows the BPM down a few notches, the drums are again super-heavy (being from the 909, as the EP title gives away), but this time the keys take a softer approach, with glorious floating pads underpinning the mellow mood here. A wonderfully woozy closer to the A-side. 

Flipping over for “File 3“ on the B-side, the 909 is joined by our old friend the M1 bassline, with clipped vox parts adding to the energy pulsing through the track. Swinging along in a fashion reminiscent of classics such as  Kerri Chandler et'al, this is a superb straight-up warm house jam. 

Rounding the EP off, “File 4’"is built around a stabby church organ riff which nags away throughout the track, the punchy percussion and tinkling chords coming together in a swirl of joyous depth for the dancefloor. The bassline chugs away with its neat bounce, echoing the thump of the unmistakable 909 kicks, closing the EP off in the style it maintains throughout, namely exquisite dancefloor-driven house music which has a real timeless quality.

Separate States is a magnetic, otherworldly exploration of an artist caught in the crosswinds of two distinct worlds, each echoing a piece of the whole. The album flows with 5 tracks of trance infused groovers and 5 tracks on the tranquil hum of an endless coastline in dub techno—where heavy beats pulse in a consistent groove, and yet just beyond, an open horizon glimmers.

The journey begins in the arid, pulsing heart of Side A with El Desierto, a tribute to inmortal highlanders, vibrations in a mythical and retro uplifting experience. Life is Dance comes next with hypnotic rhythms and luring vocals, drawing the listener into a spaced out dub scape of underwater grooves. La Fiesta and Octatone carry this ethereal dream forward, each track a dance of textures, layers rising and falling like mirages under the fertile sun. The track Exi(s)t serves as both a culmination and a fracture—a razor’s edge between escape and return.

Flip to Side B, and the landscape softens, yet remains profoundly magnetic. Panorama Love unveils a vision of hazy sunlit reveries, leading into the lush, expansive sound of Serving XXL, where space and hypnotic sounds are intertwined, almost teasing the boundary between sound and silence. Telekon pulses but softly, carrying traces of neon reflections in its gentle, kaleidoscopic swells. Freedoom is open to interpretation but no doubt a hypnotic and ethereal track. The last song, Planta en Paz plants roots music in the sand, grounding the album’s restless spirit in something deep, timeless, and unexpectedly serene.

Separate States is a tale of dualities—of pulse and drift, ecstasy and release, of an artist split between worlds yet bound to both. A journey you can feel long after it ends, a tribute to ethereal electro music therefore a loving resonance that lingers in space.
