Finding his groove on Meanwhile with a clutch of impressive productions, Alex O’Rion has been a regular on GMJ and Matter’s best-selling imprint. Reaching a highpoint with May 2020’s “Echium” EP, we now return to O’Rion’s seminal work with remixes from a trio of outstanding artists.

And iconic name within the underground dance industry, Eelko Wijnja has forged a distinctive and innovative sound through his Navar soubriquet. A regular on the likes of Guy J’s Lost & Found, Roger Martinez’s Higher States and Cid Inc.’s Replug, the Dutch star makes his Meanwhile debut with a typically rich and evocative interpretation of “The Chase” that flows gloriously across its near 8-minute journey. Built upon deep kick and rolling arpeggiated synth line, familiar motifs from O’Rion’s original float into sonic range as deeply textured pads and evolving percussive groove wend their way forwards in delicate fashion. An array of sumptuous additional production, courtesy of deep bass and sympathetic new melodies, make their presence felt as the track explodes into the second movement with dancefloor grace. The result is a dynamic interpretation that places Navar at the upper echelons of dance music royalty.

 Another familiar name to the Meanwhile cognoscenti, Simos Tagias made an impact via his March 2021 twin-track “Euphoria / Emotion” EP, before September saw a remix of Imran Khan’s “Horizonz”. A veteran of over 400 production credits dating back to a debut for Lynx Records in late 2012, the Greek artist now reworks “Echium” with typical aplomb. Taking the machine-gun hi-hat pattern of the original and a 16th note bass sequence, the meandering melodic themes of O’Rion’s work resonate across a dynamic rhythmic framework. With raw, seething power, Tagias builds intensity that pauses for breath at a haunting breakdown, drenched in reverbs, delays and the stunning motif central to “Echium”, before exploding into the third movement with shimmering effervescence and club-friendly groove.

The final remix sees another Meanwhile favourite enter the fray. An artist who has grown in stature with a slew of releases on the likes of onedotsixtwo, MNL and Proton Music, Sebastian Sellares hit the ground running in April 2021 with his “Dunes at Dawn” EP. This musical triptych showcased the Argentinian’s skill and artistry, while a remix of GMJ’s “Precipice” two months later was another label highlight. Working his production magic on “The Serpent”, Sebastian Sellares has found a way to illuminate the musical phrasing of the original while creating a spotlight that shines on an array of new production material, simultaneously driving the track forward with potent rhythmic force and effortless bassline presence. The result is a searing lead line, rooted in O’Rion’s original, that cuts its way through the second half with acetylene precision, perfectly illustrating Sellares’ sought-after production credentials.

Growing in stature with a trio of towering new remixes from Navar, Simos Tagias and Sebastian Sellares, Alex O’Rion blossoms once again with “Echium”.

Hernan Cattaneo and Marcelo Vasami need little introduction to anyone with a passion for underground house. The Argentinean, a household name, regularly plays to audiences in the tens of thousands across South America and beyond, while his Sudbeat Music imprint is at the forefront of the electronic music scene. Widely known as "El Maestro", Hernan's reputation is assured. Similarly, Marcelo Vasami has been a renowned figure for over a decade with his music on the likes of Plattenbank, Afterglow, Replug and Sudbeat. Joining forces for their Meanwhile debut, the Hernan Cattaneo and Marcelo Vasami remix of "Stuck on a Feeling" immediately captures the light melodic eloquence of the original while adding a plethora of new production layers, not least in a sublime new bassline progression and crisp rolling percussive groove. Familiar refrains and the vocal so prominent in the original, come to the fore as textured and ethereal pads provide an enchanted moment in the final movement.

A growing force under his progressive house guise with releases on Lost and Found, Sudbeat Music and Mango Alley, Mike Rish has hit upon a formula for success since early work for UGENIUS. December 2021 provided the Melbourne resident with the opportunity to make his Mark on GMJ and Matter's imprint as he released his impressive musical triptych, "Beyond". Now returning for a debut remix, the Mike Rish reworking of "Storm Front" is characterised by a deep and chunky bass groove that sits perfectly within a popping, wood-block top-line with its roots firmly in Jamie Stevens' original. Evolving with ease, smooth production elements from the Mike Rish studio make their presence felt before a richly sustained bassline assumes a prominent role in the second half to superb effect.

Navar has been at the forefront of the underground dance scene for more than 15 years with his imaginative approach and immaculately honed sound. 200 production credits are testament to that fact, for such esteemed imprints as Balance, microCastle and Guy J's Lost and Found. November 2022's "Return of the Sun" illuminated Meanwhile in late 2022 as the Dutch star returns for a second remix outing. Reworking the title track, the Navar interpretation is a sparkling jewel that transforms "Circles" into a glorious, arpeggio-laden offering that shimmers with delays and delicate rhythmic cadence in the early stages. Building imperceptibly with bass groove and vocal breaths from the original, it erupts at the mid-point with a driving beat that provides a spine-tingling dancefloor juxtaposition to the smooth melodic sequences, capturing the hypnotic character of Jamie's work.

Finishing 2023 on another stratospheric high, GMJ & Matter return to their ever-rising imprint with a twin-track EP of rare quality as they end the year with “Stellaris / Idtritah”.

Over a year that saw a collection of releases cement their reputation in the rarefied atmosphere of the Progressive House movement’s leading lights, GMJ & Matter have seen music featured on Cid Inc.’s Replug, Hernan Cattaneo’s Sudbeat Music and Alex O’Rion’s newly minted Solis Records throughout 2023. Add to that a set of performances across their native Australia, Europe, and culminating in a spell-binding sold-out label showcase at Amsterdam’s Akhnaton as ADE hit the city for the dance industry’s annual shindig, and it’s not difficult to understand why the Melbourne-based duo are such hot properties.

As label bosses, the duo have overseen the meteoric rise of their Meanwhile imprint since its debut in early 2020. A regular fixture in the Beatport Progressive House Top 10 charts, Meanwhile has been the purveyor of outstanding underground dance music with a roster of artists including Jamie Stevens, Alex O’Rion and Simos Tagias. Now returning to their label with another pair of original offerings, “Stellaris” is a gorgeous free-flowing offering that immediately hits its stride with powerful beat, percussive intrigue and hallmark hi-hat urgency. Full of depth and delight, a sub-bassline hypnotises before an immaculately cadenced synth motif is woven into the rhythmic foundation with the precision of a master seamstress. A flowing and atmospheric new melody adds depth at the breakdown and continues into the head-shaking third movement accompanied by an array of white-noise risers. The result is another instant GMJ & Matter classic.

Continuing the deep, driving narrative of its partner track, “Idtritah” mesmerises with an immaculately constructed groove of rolling top-line hats and percussion, while a staccato bassline adds further gravitas. A cascading combination of melodies trip across each other with ease as a warm blanket of melodic flow and smooth delays envelops the listener, culminating a beautifully textured and ethereal mid-point break. A new plucked phrasing enters the fray in the second half to magical effect with the addition of subtle vocal textures and exquisitely placed effects creating another superb track that sits perfectly within the GMJ & Matter canon.

Ending the year as they began, GMJ & Matter shoot for the stars once more with “Stellaris / Idtritah”.
