It Don't Mean A Thing (If It Ain't Got That Swing)

I got introduced to this website called videogamemusicacademy.com that has a music making challenge this month. Basically you are challenged to produce a snippet of music every day for the next 21 days in order to build a habit of composing.
The host of the challenge provided a list of ideas for people to get busy with, called Quest Logs.

Because of my chronic condition I don't necessarily expect to be able to complete the challenge. I won't be competing for prizes. I just want to see how far I can get. I like the idea of just writing something without having to commit to finishing an idea to completion.

This particular piece sprung forth from Quest Log Level 1. One of the challenges is to write something for a Music Box. I used the Thumb Piano setting on my Digital Piano and just improvised. I emphasize that this is not a completed piece by any stretch of the imagination. I played around with the same idea a couple of times, so the song doesn't sound like it is actually going somewhere. There are some spontaneous ideas in there that I think are usable for making a complete thing.

PS: Oh yeah, the challenge started yesterday, so I enabled cheat mode and did two things today to catch up :P

[Musical Sketch] Music Box - VGMA Challenge Lv I

I got introduced to this website called videogamemusicacademy.com that has a music making challenge this month. Basically you are challenged to produce a snippet of music every day for the next 21 days in order to build a habit of composing.
The host of the challenge provided a list of ideas for people to get busy with, called Quest Logs.

Because of my chronic condition I don't necessarily expect to be able to complete the challenge. I won't be competing for prizes. I just want to see how far I can get. I like the idea of just writing something without having to commit to finishing an idea to completion.

This particular piece sprung forth from Quest Log Level 1. One of the challenges is to write something in swing (that means that 8-th notes alternate between long and short). I messed around on my piano and quickly got something that sounded swingy enough. It is not quite my style, but I guess playing around with it did teach some new things. For example: I learned that swing notes go well with triplets.

I quickly booted up MuseScore2 and wrote down what I got, then tried to add some more things. I ended up getting seriously stuck, but that's okay for now. Its not about getting polished tunes.

Yeah, the samples sounds terrible :P Can't help you with that.

This particular piece sprung forth from Quest Log Level 1. I was going to go for "Something Borrowed", which challenges you to "borrow" a chord from another Key. I thought I did, but then I realized the F-sharp is part of the harmonic G-minor key. So I ended up thinking I was going between chromatic and harmonic minor. However, I did end up canceling the E-flat, so now I'm not sure what to call that. I kept the B-flat, so it wasn't a genuine modulation to G-major either. 0_0; I guess I'll just settle for another quest called "A minor challenge". This just has you write something in a minor key, which I did: G-minor.

I kind of had something like this melody going round in my head for weeks now and figured I'd put it to paper. It turned out a little different than I wanted, and I guess I'm not too happy with it. I'll probably work on it more another time. For now, it should be enough that I tried something for the challenge.

Unfortunately I missed yesterday and I'm feeling terribly sick (flu/cold) today. Or to stay in the video game lingo: "I'm poisoned and need a cure." :P

[Musical Sketch] A Minor Challenge - VGMA Lv 1

This track spontaneously happened to me today :) When I got out of bed I had the first 4 notes in my head. I quickly ran to the piano to figure out which ones they were. I wrote them down for later. I had to go do other things first. But during the morning I started working on the track in my head and got the idea for the piano part. After a couple of hours I finally got to sit down in front of the computer and wrote up the notes in Musescore 2. Not too much later I managed to complete the whole thing, AND I made it loopable :)I think that's a first for me!

I guess I can't really find a quest on the Quest Log from videogamemusicacademy.com to place this under, but who cares. The challenge is about doing daily composing, and I did, and I actually managed to create a completed thing.

Looking back on it, I think my main inspirations for this were Volley Fire (Game Boy) and Power Rangers The Movie (also Game Boy). At first I was a little disappointed that my initial 4 notes sounded suspiciously much like one of the Volley Fire themes. I was afraid I subconsciously copied them. I think I managed to stay somewhat original in the end. I really like the result, even if its just a simple tune.

[Spontaneous Composition] This Is How We Used To Do It [MS]

This particular piece sprung forth from Quest Log Level 1. One of the challenges is called "compounding the problem" which asks you to write something in Compound Metre (f.e. 5/4, 6/8, 9/8). I wanted to learn about 5/4 but ended up finding stuff on the other ones. 
In a way I combined this with another quest that challenges to look into instruments from other cultures. I discovered I have something called a Shakuhachi in the Kontakt 5 player. I thought it sounded pretty nice and different. EDIT: I later learned this is a Japanese bamboo flute. The real thing sounds a lot better than the electronic one!

The first part of this song is simply 4/4 time where I'm playing around with a new drumkit and some free other stuff from the Kontakt 5 player. Then I switch to 12/8 time and get really experimental.
Of course its very basic and lucky for me I don't have to complete an entire track! I do feel inspired to make something more out of this at a later time.

I'm a learner-pianist and amateur composer, looking to create beautiful and memorable music. My main inspirations are (classic) video game soundtracks, trance music and movie themes. I love energetic rock as well as more emotional pieces, especially with strings and piano.

In the future I wish to write Christian music with an emphasis on content that gives believers a Biblically sound and theologically rich 'offering' to praise God with.

I take piano lessons and learn mostly by playing around on my instrument or the computer. I work with Musescore 4 for notation and inspiration and with FL Studio 21 for a more professional sound.
