Deep Ghosh recently moved to Amsterdam to start a new professional chapter his space engineering life (working at the European Space Agency and looking after environmental monitoring missions), but over the last couple of years has been working on his newly coined role as a 'rave engineer' (or as he jokingly refers to it as the '5 to 9'). Deep is one of the curators of the Flow Sessions long-format 3:33hr mix series, co-creator and organizer UTOPIA Festival, veteran burner (Burning Man, AfrikaBurn, KiezBurn) and active in the Berlin and Amsterdam Burner communities. In between all this, he also enjoys DJing occasionally (on land and sea)

"I am happy to say I was able to finally take a moment and breathe, and make a little 2-hour story of some of the music that I got to discover and share over the last 6 months: starting with dismal winter lockdown and curfew in Amsterdam, to surviving in sweaty office kitchens, secret speakeasies and finally freedom under the blue skies, skirting the turquoise waters of the Red Sea teeming with life, and the Martianesque mountains of the Sinai Peninsula. The last 3 months I got to spend returning to Egypt multiple times was the truly reinvigorating and creatively recharging gift of 2021, as I returned to take on a dystopian castle adventure with my friends at UTOPIA, and help bring our culture back to doing what it does best: spreading joy and love through music, dance, and community. So much more awaits!

For me, music has always served as an audible journal entry, an irreplaceable bookmark on a moment and experience, and an instant memory trigger. This particular journey is a deeply personal one, and emotes where I have been lately (introspectively and otherwise): personally, mentally, emotionally, and a musical nod to some of the incredibly talented humans I recently connected with on my travels to Egypt. I hope you enjoy this peak into my diary before we reunite on the dancefloor soon and write some more chapters together (be it on a boat, in the mountains, a magical castle, or a DTLA rooftop). "

At the tip of the Baja peninsula, frequented by sunkissed intrepid seekers of sonic and epicurean alchemy, lies the wonderland known as Crania. 

For 2021, I had the distinct pleasure to culminate our musical journey there.

I have always said that music is a river. My body is merely a vessel floating down this river and will one day reach the sea. 

On this special evening, our musical expedition explored Gospel, Brazilian, Afrohouse, Disco, Dark Disco, Indie, House, Deep House, and all of the tributaries feeding our souls.

Our next podcast comes from @elbatos, who evokes summery feelings in us. In the next 2 hours you can expect warm melodies that raise serotonin levels. One or the other deep driving beat provides the necessary variety for the ear. Listening to the mix we realize how much we miss loud bass and dancing under clear skies. So it's good that the festivals will start again soon.

What is Downtempo? Schon ‚the one and only‘ Iorie sah hier wohl so viel Klärungsbedarf, dass er der Beantwortung dieser Frage einen eigenen Track widmete. Das Thema ‚Genres‘ ist ja ohnehin so eine Sache, bei der wir vergeblich nach Schwarz-Weiß-Definitionen suchen - doch gerade beim Downtempo gibt es wohl sehr unterschiedliche Auffassungen dessen, welche Höchstgeschwindigkeiten zulässig sind. Falls der letzte Satz in dir nun heftiges Kopfschütteln auslöst, weil du denkst, dass das Tempolimit klar wie Kloßbrühe sei, dann kannst du mal ‚downtempo bpm‘ in die Suchmaschine deiner Wahl eingeben und wirst erstaunt sein, welche ambivalenten Antworten das World Wide Web zu Tage bringt. Für unsere Schleichcasts haben wir die 'Obergrenze' mit 112 bpm relativ großzügig gesetzt. Diese wird in Schleichcast°27 auf sicherer Distanz gehalten - wir haben es mit einem Set zu tun, bei dem über die Einteilung in besagtes Genre sicherlich weitgehende Einigkeit herrscht. Zumindest für den Fall, dass du nicht etwa die alternativen Bezeichnungen ‚Slowrave‘ oder ‚Ketapop‘ bevorzugst. Ketapop? Yep, der Track ab Minute 30 plädiert literally dafür…

Bei aller Subjektivität des Empfindens von Schnelligkeit und Genres, sind wir der Meinung, dass die wunderbaren Naja und Nadia (@najesh_and_artisoko) mit Schleichcast°27 eine kleine Hommage an die Schönheit der musikalischen Langsamkeit raushauen - ihren ganzen Spielraum nutzen, um melodische Tiefen, klangliche Weiten und sphärische Stimmungen zu kreieren. Vielleicht ist jeder einzelne Track irgendwo auch eine Hommage an sich selbst, weil jeder Ton und jedes Detail genügend Zeit und damit Beachtung geschenkt bekommt?! Wir freuen uns sehr, das DJ-Duo aus Bern in schleichender Mission am Start zu haben und wünschen dir viel Vergnügen mit Schleichcast°27!

Durch mømø kamen wir zu unserem allerersten Gig, als er uns gerade mal 3 Wochen, nachdem wir begonnen hatten, ins Tanzhaus West in Frankfurt eingeladen hatte.
 
>>Was hat euch für das Set inspiriert?
Nun ja, wie geht schleichend? Sich so richtig Zeit lassen beim Tempo, beim Aufbau und erzählen unserer Geschichte, mehr Druck untenrum kreieren sowie die Frage "wie klingt Slowtech für uns?".
 
>>Was gefällt euch besonders an langsamer Musik?
In langsamen Tracks erkennen wir so viel Schönheit, da alle enthaltenen Töne so viel Raum & Zeit bekommen, um richtig gehört und gefühlt zu werden. "Langsame Musik" bedeutet für uns: der Musik in unserem Innern eine Weite zu ermöglichen.

>>Euer Geheimtipp gegen den Kater am nächsten Morgen?
Mit Herzensmenschen den Tag ausklingen lassen, dazu Tee, Kohlrabi, Möhren und eine frisch gekochte Artischocke, die geht nämlich immer ;)

Unsere Nr. 237 kommt heute von einem Tübinger Downtempo Projekt welches mir bereits seit einiger Zeit bekannt ist und mich immer wieder fasziniert. Ihren Sound beschreiben die beiden als detailverliebt, faserig, zerfranst & zugenäht, mal warm und flauschiger, mal düster und treibend - immer mit Attitüde und Gefühl. Dieses spiegelt sich sowohl in ihren Mixen, DJ-Sets und Produktionen wieder. 

Die Rede ist von Überhaupt & Außerdem aka Andi und Philipp. Zwei sau sympathische Kerle mit der gewissen Würze in ihrem Soundverständnis. Beim Hören bleibt eigentlich nie ein Bein ruhig stehen. Ganz im Gegenteil, dezent, aber mit einer gewissen Verbindlichkeit entführen sie jeden Hörer klammheimlich auf die Tanzfläche. Und dort angekommen macht man es sich auch schnell gemütlich. Dazu passt ihre Musik ganz wunderbar. Ganz nebenbei haben sich die beiden in all den Jahren auch zu spannenden Produzenten gemausert. Bisher erschienen einige Perlen auf Underyourskin, Akumandra, Heimlich Musik, Magician on Duty, Akasha MX und vielen weiteren. Tendenz steigend. Nicht von ungefähr haben wir auf unser Seite auch bereits einige Produktionen von den Beiden premiert.

Ihr für uns aufgenommenes Set hat mich direkt von Anfang an abgeholt. Der Beat, die Flächen und die spannende Stimmung entführen einen definitiv ohne Umwege aus dem Alltag hin zu einer sonnigen Tanzwiese im wunderschönen Grün. Dabei bewegen sie sich gekonnt irgendwo zwischen Tanz und Traum, Druck und Leichtigkeit, aber alles mit einer positiven Aura versehen. Sie selber geben an, dass ihre Aufnahme eine Mischung aus „ […] Schmusig- und Kratzbürstigkeit“ ist. Das trifft den Nagel auf den Kopf. Ihr Mix besteht ganz Nebenbei im wesentlichen aus eigenen Produktionen aus dem Bereich des Mid- und Downtempos. Wer sie nicht kennt, muss dies schleunigst nachholen. Es lohnt sich.´, wie der Mix auf Beste beweißt.

Schnallt euch an… Ich kann mich nur wiederholen, aber es erwartet euch eine Reise, die wie gemacht für eine Afterhour ist. Keine Phrase, keine Fake-News, sondern ehrliche Worte eines musikverliebten Spessarters.

Ich danke euch vielmals Andi und Philipp für dieses besondere Set. Umwerfend tagtraumtanzbar und erfrischend gut. Chapeu.

Welcome back to the Magician On Duty Journey Series!

On this edition we welcome Deep Ghosh (@deep_schismic)

Deep (and yes, it really is his name) started his DJing journey in a sweaty club in Berlin back in 2017, where he witnessed his growing obsession for electronic music tip over from hobby to worthwhile passion. Since then, he has travelled to some of the dustiest and lushest corners of the globe from his hometown Melbourne to the beaches of Bali, from Black Rock City to the Tankwa Karoo of South Africa, from the mountains of Sinai to the Red Sea and beyond living out this passion. 

His musical selections are one of unabashed love of emotional, vocal melodies juxtaposition to the deeper end of the sonic spectrum, while showing the influences of his musical upbringing in rock music and pop culture as well as occasionally giving us peeks into the music of his ancestors.

While the world slowed down during the COVID-19 pandemic, Deep managed to stay engaged in his passion for music. Since 2020, he is one of the curators of the Flow Sessions long-format mix series. He is also co-organiser, curator and "rave engineer" of boutique gatherings such as UTOPIA Festival, as well as being involved in organizing Burner and underground gatherings in Berlin and Amsterdam (where he is based since 2020 in pursuit of his rather cosmic day job as a space engineer looking after climate monitoring satellite missions).

This mix really captures how I love to get lost in music, create emotional journeys and showcase some of my musical influences. It was one of those situations of being out in a magical corner of the world--on a boat, out on the turquoise waters of the Red Sea--with some of my nearest and dearest celebrating the birthday of a legendary woman, and opening the musical proceedings for a week of love laughter and riding the waves.

After an endless Indian summer, the first autumn storm had finally arrived in the witch’s forest. It was already late in the morning and the rain was lashing down mercilessly, but Hekske (the little witch) nor Falke (the 10-year old witch apprentice) were in the mood to open their eyes. In any case, Falke was too busy cuddling the little dragon, who had hatched from the egg just 24 hours earlier.
Despite being only 1 day old, he clearly had a fiery character. But when Falke was around, he was all sweetness and playfulness. 
When the rain abated and turned into a drizzle, the witches decided to get out of their warm bed of moss and go and greet Lalita, the nymph who is guarding the tiny oak tree (which is only 3 feet high, but destined to become the future mother tree of the forest). After their morning hug, the girls took their customary morning bath in the dark water of the nymph’s pond. While Hekske and Lalita slipped out of their long dresses and waded into the cold water, Falke stayed on the side of the pond to keep the little dragon company. She wasn’t even sure whether the dragon could swim. While sitting on the soft moss, the dragon played with Falke’s blond hair. Strangely, Falke’s skin seemed to become paler while the dragon’s scales became darker and darker, and a little later he was pitch black while Falke’s skin had become white as a snow flake.
After a while Lalita came out of the water to look after the dragon, so that Falke could take her morning bath too. But after taking her first dip into the water, the little dragon became very restless and wriggled himself out our Lalita’s hands. He ran towards the pond and dived into the water with a graceful jump. He stayed under the water surface for a really long time and the girls even started to worry whether he had drowned. But then something strange happened. The dark water suddenly became very clear and they could see the little dragon swim around the bottom of the pond with the agility of an otter. Then they realized that he must be a water dragon, one of the rarest and most precious kinds of dragon. He was in a very playful and soon he was splattering water with Falke, and her cheerful giggles could be heard throughout the forest, making everyone forget that it was a grey, drizzly autumn day …

As spring slowly turns into summer, it's not just the mood that changes - the warm air of summer peacefully envelops us and Deep Ghosh whisks us away into a realm of pure, relaxed bliss. In his usual emphatic and terribly relaxed manner, the Dutch master of deceleration lets us take part in his ride back to reality.

3 years ago, I turned 33, and found myself at a crossroads in life. During a period of self-reflection, I found myself fascinated watching a gently swinging pendulum clock in an observatory demonstrate the passage of time and knock over markers demonstrating the rotation of the Earth. Watching it in motion, almost imperceptibly, made me appreciate how the forces of the universe are in perpetual motion, spinning, ebbing and flowing through everything. As an engineer, I should have been content marveling at this simple science experiment. I kept pondering though and got lost in thought beyond science and mechanics: lost in thoughts of human connection, thoughts of where the journey on this spinning blue rock could lead, thoughts of what I wanted to do with my time here, and with it setting some imperceptible intentions while the pendulum kept swinging.

3 years later, I can bear witness to the power of manifestation of true intentions. One of those imperceptible (and at the time probably improbable) intentions was to devote more time and energy into the pursuit of music, and creative, artistic pursuits as a balance to my mechanical and rational mind. I am amazed and humbled and excited by the path I set foot on 3 years ago, and especially grateful that I found myself a global soul tribe with whom I look forward to create, grow, laugh, dance and spread love through genuine connection. One key part of this global soul tribe is this beautiful Flow family. To Corr and Yelena who brought me into this project and empower me greatly in my creative pursuits and help me wield my powers of connection for good:  I'm humbled and grateful for having you, and cannot wait to see where we end up in the next 3 years.

This mix sums up what Flow Sessions is all about to me: letting the music and beats guide the journey, going with the flow, and not least of all showcasing the immensely talented artists whose music has not only inspired and influenced my musical tastes over the last 3 years but also includes the music of my adolescence, the music of my ancestors, and an unabashed love of emotional vocal melodies in juxtaposition to deeper ends of the sonic spectrum. I hope you enjoy the journey, and the imperceptible pondering that may result over the 3hrs 33min.
