Samuele Defendi and Giovanni Basile aka Smoud Beats were born in 1997 in south Italy. Since they were children they were always in strong contact with the music, furthermore during their teenage their passion takes over. They stand out with their drum rhythms and hypnotic synths, constantly looking for new sounds, with strong UK Garage,Acid House,Minimal and many more influences. In October 2017 they started their own self-titled label Smoud Traxx, having success from the first releases in the last two years had the opportunity to perform in the entire Italy from North to South.
Becoming part of the famous group, Buongiorno Classic, in summer 2018, where they play regularly their sounds.

Stepping in for our 4th edition of the Distrikt podcast we bring a very special duo Yamen & EDA into the mix. 

The French city of Montpellier has long possessed an obsession with all things
electronic music. At the forefront of this scene is Yamen & EDA. Friends since childhood, the pair possess an almost telepathic understanding behind the decks and in the studio, A way of working that’s brought them to the attention of some of house and techno’s most renowned imprints and dancefloors.

Having officially kicked off as a duo in 2011, Yamen & EDA’s ascendency has been an impressive one. Raised on a solid musical diet of minimal house and techno, the pair’s formative years were spent on the many dancefloors of the south of France, experiences that still inspire their music to this very day. 

Quickly getting down to business in the studio, their inaugural releases hinted at great promise, eventually bringing them to the attention of One Records boss, Adam Shelton. Always keen to foster fledgeling talent, Shelton has signed numerous Yamen & EDA releases to his imprint and even had the boys join him at One Records showcases in London at fabric, Sonar in Barcelona and at Below in Birmingham.

The relationship is one that’s since brought the pair to the attention of numerous other labels, with releases on Earlydub, LAATE, Shogun Audio and their own Maison Mere label, a vinyl-only affair. the label promises to promote a wide range of contrasting electronic sounds. “A platform to collect and release music without any limits”. 

Their music has been played along the way by some of the scene’s foremost players, with Raresh, Petre Inspirescu and Apollonia all lending their support.

Gianis is a true record digger and music producer who is doing some solid work over in Brazil. He is a resident of two important collectives of the independent scene of Curitiba, called Microondas and 4x4, where he is involved heavily in the development of parties as well as Djing. In his sets and productions he look for timeless sounds from house to techno and electro.

SAISEI is a Japanese label founded and curated by Junki Inoue. Known as an avid record enthusiast and for his impeccable dj sets, Junki Inoue brings a very carefully curated, idealised and conceptualised platform that marries his native Japan and his current London-base.

SAISEI is a Japanese word which means ‘reproduction’ and ‘to play’ (as in playing records).
Japanese culture is widely known for being traditional as much as it is known for being forward into the future and this label’s concept makes justice to exactly that. Having started to dig records as early as 16, Inoue delved into productions from 1990s Japan to feature native gems previously unreleased on vinyl. The idea is to recapture and reintroduce unique pieces of Japanese electronic music on a new (old) medium which is vinyl and, to an audience it never reached before as most of this music was only released in Japan.

As with most things Japanese, they are generally ahead of their time, in this case, it means this is music sounding so fresh now as it did when it came out, one that survived the test of time to, 30 years later, prove the true meaning of timeless, sublime, elegant and sophisticated music. With that said, it is no surprise this label will not limit itself to necessarily functional club music but way beyond.

The first EP on the label is by artists KINO-MODERNO formed by Dat Planet and Wah Wah Fuzzmaster and distributed by Berlin’s ‘Off the Grid’. This extraordinary acid house & techno music of Kino-Moderno that was originally created with the assistance of a powerful sound treatment of a 3D recording system called BMC that makes it sound so refreshingly retro-future but with an undoubtedly 2021 twist when listening to it. While incorporating a binaural recording technique via dummy head and given an improvised digital remix treatment via a classic synthesizer, Synclavia 2, you can enjoy these powerfully penetrating tracks that sought a 3D audio, trip-like feel throughout.

Kino-Moderno was experimenting very early on with emerging, different recording ideas such as rapping, poetry-reading and synthetic voicing. Their use of a 3D recording system called BMC added to the sound carrying over to today, paired with binaural recording technique via dummy head and an improvised digital remix treatment via the classic Synclavia 2 synthesizer. The album which featured ‘Into the Future’ and ‘The Glove’ was quite experimental in its time but very danceable as well.
