Minimal House

Midland is a quiet and reserved character but one that always makes a big impact. Despite only being active for a few years, he is already someone who resides in the upper echelons of the global house and techno scene. This is evidenced by the fact that as a DJ he plays only the most revered places, and when he does so he manages to reach far and wide, calling upon many different electronic sounds without ever falling prey to modern trends. It is the same when producing on labels like Aus and his own Graded, where his records are functional but fun affairs with corrugated drums, rugged bass and physical grooves that never fail to arrest a dance floor’s attention. This mix he has served up for us is another fine example of that. 

Starting off in an abstract world of atmospheric sound and smeared chords, it’s not long before Midland establishes a groove that then grows in stature for the next hour. Atop the always physical drums are all manner of cosmic melodies, soul fuelled pads and spryly percussive patterns. Touching on house that ranges from dark and mysterious to more sun kissed and playful, this journey feels much long than it is because of how much Midland manages to so masterfully pack in.

With end of year lists slowly starting to trickle out, there's one track in particular we find that's absent from some of the bigger sites, despite having what could be considered a decent summer. Championed by both Joy Orbison and Scuba in each of their respected Essential mixes, snippets of new untitled Endian teased the notion that a follow up to his Electric Minds and NonPlus releases would be forthcoming in the near future. Having debuted on the Radio 1 airwaves in July 2014, it wasn't till early May 2015 that the track got a name and a confirmed release date on London based label Secretsundaze. Titled 'Finish Me' the track, would go on to become one of our favourite summer anthems (as mentioned here) and acquire a near-omnipresent status in clubs and at festivals up and down the country over the summer period, while still remaining in some way an underground sleeper-hit. We'd like to think the nod to his roots, and other revered alias, struck a chord or possibly two with all the jungle enthusiasts out there, as well as appealing to the house and techno crowd. While the A side explored more club-friendly territory with its melodic aspects and billowing breakdown, the B side's "Dusty" and "Sub Tropics" provided a much more rooted warehouse affair; taking his technical skill and experience as Commix and and channeling it into the confines of 130BPM. His use of subtle melodies and pads, reminiscent of 90s jungle/drum and bass LPs have made for well received tracks like "Birdhouse" and "Two Chords Deep", the latter being one of his early attempts at using a proper hardware setup to explore his techno and house productions, and arguably still one of his best tracks.

I was asked to asked to warm-up the room for Jeremy Olander's Vivrant showcase at Sound-Bar in Chicago, and I was happy to do so.  Jeremy is an artist who's work I've now been a longtime fan of, and it's been pretty awesome seeing his star rise over all these years.  On this special night, I set the tone for the first 2.5 hours, and it truly felt like one of those few-and-far-between events where everything was fully cohesive from start to finish.  Killer vibes all night, and palpable electric energy in the air.  I wish they all could be like this every time.

Anyway, I'm really happy to share this set with all of you, as I know I'm overdue on posting a fresh mix...  And that being said, this is a pretty damn good one to be putting up.  It's stacked with a mixture of super fresh cuts, some tried and true selections with staying power, and I peppered in some fine selections from the Vested Recordings label catalog, some of which are forthcoming releases and got some great reactions from all of you in attendance.

For this episode of the Avenue Red Podcast we welcome Elistratov, a keen record collector and DJ of the deeper realms who hails from Moscow, Russia. We noticed his mixes were always short but very sweet, often around 50 minutes in duration. His all-vinyl sets are compact, perfectly crafted trips through tight, intricate selections of deep house & techno futurism that is delicate, seductive and groovy in equal measure.

The way he glues his sounds together so seamlessly is very inspirational and if you're not paying close attention, the mixing seems totally invisible, imperceptible. Each record is like a piece of a jigsaw puzzle... no missing pieces, no damaged edges, everything fits together perfectly and the final picture is sharp and beautiful.
