Manny Oquendo (also known as Acustyk, Electro Feotus, MegMan, and MegManMusic) is a
pioneering figure in the realms of illbient, electronic music, and experimental hip hop.
Oquendo’s electronic music journey began in the 1990s, where he became a key member of
Byzar, an influential project that blended ambient, hip-hop, and dub elements, alongside
innovators like DJ Spooky and Raz Mesani. His unique production style—melding complex
rhythms, bass-heavy grooves, and atmospheric soundscapes—was central to the formation of
the illbient genre.
Oquendo’s collaborative spirit is evident in his work with Antipop Consortium, where he
produced and composed tracks like "Eyewall" and "Superunfrontable" on their acclaimed
albums Tragic Epilogue (2000) and Fluorescent Black (2009). His ability to combine
experimental electronic textures with hip-hop’s rhythmic foundation helped define the group’s
avant-garde sound, pushing the boundaries of abstract rap.
Beyond his contributions to Byzar and Antipop Consortium, Oquendo was deeply involved in
the Cultural Alchemy SoundLab events in New York City, where he worked alongside notable
underground artists to push the boundaries of experimental sight and sound. His collaborations
with DJ Spooky on the album Riddim Warfare (1998), as well as his participation in Tuatara -
Underworld (2014), a project led by Barrett Martin (Screaming Trees, Mad Season),
showcase his versatility in fusing ambient, jazz, and electronic elements.
Oquendo’s music is marked by his innovative use of bass guitar, synthesizers, and
production techniques, and his sound continues to influence contemporary music, particularly
in the experimental and underground scenes. As MegManMusic, he continues to evolve as
an artist, contributing to the ongoing transformation of electronic music and avant-garde
hip-hop. His work remains a vital part of the legacy of illbient and experimental music, shaping
the way genres intersect and push artistic boundaries.
