Ahead of this weekend’s Bassiani booking, Berghain resident Fadi Mohem delivers a masterful blend of large scale rhythms for Bassiani Podcast 247. Raised in the leafy suburb of Spandau, the native Berliner always had the very best of nightlife within easy reach: exposure to drum ‘n’ bass, Detroit, the dubby incarnations of Basic Channel and IDM meting out references for a personal distillation of sound that saw him go from techno acolyte and sound engineering student to folk mainstay in just a few years. A stint at cult vinyl purveyor Hard Wax and the tutelage and encouragement of Ben Klock (they met in 2016) have permeated his work even further. From his alma mater to Dekmantel and beyond, his is a lexicon comprised of rhythmic loops and heavily stylised snarls that ripple, echo and penetrate the body; a catalyst for mental and physical experience that’s forward-looking and deeply intuitive. This latest one’s a 92 minute compilation of Mohem’s favourite sounds, an avatar for his high-concept sonic palette, assembly line beats from this nonpareil Berlin selector.

Schon in den jungen Jahren haben sich die zwei Jungs von Vellum, Carlo und Sandro, von der Musik begeistern lassen. Carlo versuchte sich im Kindheitsalter als Schlagzeuger, was er auch einige Zeit ausführte und Sandro fand seine Verbindung doch eher zur elektrischen Gitarre, jedoch hielt diese Passion nicht allzu lange. 

Als Teenager wurden die beiden erstmals auf die elektronische Musik aufmerksam. Vorgängig noch eher im Electro und Dubstep Bereich, doch schnell fanden sie auch zum House und Techno. Mit ungefähr 17 Jahren blieben sie letzterem Musikstil dann auch bis heute treu. Sie beide sind der Meinung, dass die Technokultur und Musik eine Art Rückzugsort vor dem Alltag sein kann und es ihnen die Möglichkeit gibt ihre Interessen auszuleben.

Zum Auflegen kamen die beiden schon im Jahre 2012, als sie bei einer kleinen Privatparty, das erste Mal gesehen haben wie solch eine Session überhaupt funktioniert und selber ein paar Knöpfe drücken konnten. Schnell erkannten die zwei, dass ihnen dieses Hobby auf jeden Fall Spass machen würde und sie entschlossen sich, nun als Zweiergruppe aufzulegen. Angefangen mit einem Traktor Kontrol S2 von Native Instruments, wurde Ihnen nach ungefähr einem Jahr klar, dass es doch viel spannender sein kann und sie begannen mit Traktor Scratch und Turntables zu arbeiten. 

Nach und nach verbesserten sich die beiden, doch leider auch in ganz andere Richtungen. Sandro widmete sich eher dem Techhouse und Carlo biss sich an dunklem Deephouse fest. Ihnen wurde schnell klar, dass sich diese Gruppe Namens „TanzFaktor“ nun auflösen musste, da sie einfach nicht mehr zusammen passten.

Carlo fuhr das ganze unter seinem gebürtigen Namen „Carlo Thommen“ als Einzelkünstler fort, steckte jedoch viel mehr Zeit in das dahinter stehende Label „Spielplatzhelden“ und stellte seine DJ-Karriere in den Hintergrund.

Sandro dagegen, kam unter seinem neuen Künstlernamen „sevenaga!n“ zu einigen Gigs in namhaften Clubs wie dem Nordstern und dem Hinterhof in Basel. Er ist ebenfalls beim Label „Spielplatzhelden“ unter Vertrag, sowie ein Gründungsmitglied. 

Vor Kurzem spielten Carlo und Sandro immer wieder B2B’s und hatten die Idee, nach zwei Jahren gesammelter Erfahrung und mit neuer Musik ein frisches Projekt zu erschaffen. Vellum. Vellum verbindet Altes mit Neuem und durch die Erfahrung welche sie schon mit gemeinsamen Sets gesammelt und durch frischen Wind, welchen die Beiden durch einzelne Gigs geerntet haben, ergibt sich nun etwas ganz Neues. 

Die Jungs treten mit einem dunklen Deep-Techhouse, welcher schon an Techno grenzt, auf und füllen eine Lücke in der Szene welche immer grösser wird.

About Tresor Berlin
At midnight, on March 13th 1991, a basement door opened at Leipziger Strasse 126, Berlin. Through this door, many passed, on their way to defining new terrains in electronic music. There they found a dance floor in the vaults of a closed-down department store, with a unique sound bound to dense fog, building night after night a history that was also a vision of the future.

This history has seen in Jeff Mills’ first sets on three turntables, Underground Resistance's first live appearances in Europe, grandiose Tresor Park parties, to various chapters of the Loveparade with Sven Väth in the 90s and since then countless generation-spanning parties. These moments represent the highlights of infinite personal clubbing experiences. It is the manifestation of the Berlin spirit, emerging from its considerable strife. This history is not without its complications - from temporary closure by the authorities and several raids in the early years to closure and demolition of the old location in 2005. What followed was years of wandering in exile and, finally, resurrection in the new home in Kraftwerk Berlin.

These stories, conversations and shared experiences within our walls forge a resilience that drives towards a shared ideal, the Tresor sound: community, resistance, and the world to come. This was observed in the newly re-unified German youth, who danced and celebrated together from the club’s inception, and into the present day through ongoing community work in Detroit.

To those that have danced before, and to those that will dance in the future: the light at the end of the long Tresor tunnel is a signal. A flicker amidst the fog. This is our future. This is our place.

ROI is one of the most alert and creative minds in Spain, but also an insatiable producer if we talk about experimenting with the electronic music from all angles. This is attested to by his Fanzine project, which he co-directs with The Panic Room. And it is that, in this electronic principality where everything is governed by concepts such as purity, elegance and devotion to music, people like ROI are admired, capable of sacrificing his best years to contribute their grain of sand to the cause forming professionals.

As a DJ he manages without losing sight of his tendency to dance and reflection, to combine depending the moment a multitude of genres with coherence and enjoyment in equal parts until weaving together a story with a beginning, middle and end.

Slash Unit is the new b2b project by Nohar and Ex.Hale. The 2 combine together groovy and hypnotic rhythms with Detroit techno roots to create something unique and magic. The duo debuted on September 27th at Tank in Bologna as headliner for the opening party.

En La Pocilga sentí un calor incondicional por parte de un público entregado, cultivado en lo que escucha y crítico. De principio a fin, me fundí con el público en cada parámetro que movía o elemento que corregía y añadía. El ambiente cálido y sensible a cada track que ya es propio del asistente a la marca, hizo de mi set unos de los que más he disfrutado en cabinas. La sinergia fué absoluta desde el minuto 1. Me sentí arropado y empujado rápidamente, así como acompañado en los momentos más introspectivos de mi discurso musical. Consideré que era buen lugar y compañía para expresar una vertiente más profunda y pausada de mis sets, y acerté.

around Europe at the likes of Berghain, Fabric, Concrete, Sub Club, Glastonbury Festival and much more. He was also DJ of choice on the first two Karenn European tours, the last of which was marked by his now classic Boiler Room set in London.

Known primarily for his fast-moving, skillful style on the decks, Sunil's reputation as a producer of raw, individualistic techno, has grown in tandem with his reputation as a DJ. To date he has appeared on labels such as Works The Long Nights (aka Sheworks), Black Sun Records, Rave Or Die, Trensmat, Mord, Inner Surface Music, Violet Poison and many more. Sunil also recently setup
On The Hoof, a label dedicated specifically to his own productions and collaborations with friends.

Sunil makes up one half of Tinfoil alongside fellow Dublin-based producer DeFeKT. Initially forged as a studio partnership in 2014 (and more recently as a live show), the pair have since racked up an impressive catalogue of 12"s on their own self-titled label. Additionally, Sunil runs the wonderfully erratic Earwiggle imprint that has built a dedicated following, releasing new names and old heroes into the battlefield.

Sunil's application to techno and the scene in general, pushes far beyond the standard
DJ/producer mould. Enjoying a long stint in pirate radio from his early days of active DJing, Sunil joined national station RTÉ 2fm in 2007, where he has since offered up a monthly mix of new music. The show has also been characterized by in-depth interviews with the likes of Jeff Mills, Surgeon, Blawan and many others.

Sunil has also devised a new format for playing/reviewing new music in "The Quarterly Crate". Now in its third year, the hugely informative video series supplies a special insight into his most recent vinyl acquisitions.

Some may have seen or even experienced first hand Vaal and the Life and Death crew hammering Mathame's highly anticipated EP at ADE this year which is due to arrive on Vaal’s very own Baastard label later this month. 

Having already released on labels such as Connaisseur Recordings and Souvenir Music the pair are certainly paving their way for a very interesting project within the underground music community.
