In our next Visions podcast, we pay tribute to the remarkable music career of Yukihiro Takahashi, who sadly passed away on January 11th after bravely battling cancer for several years. He was 70 years old. Most prominently known as the lead singer and drummer of Yellow Magic Orchestra (YMO), Yukihiro Takahashi co-founded the band alongside music legends Ryuichi Sakamoto and Haruomi Hosono. YMO were trailblazers in introducing electronic sounds to pop music, exerting a significant influence on early British synth-pop bands. Alongside Kraftwerk, they played a vital role in popularizing synthesizers.

While the German band adopted a more robotic and minimalistic approach, shaping techno as a genre in late 80s Europe, the Japanese counterpart masterfully infused humanity into the world of computers and machines they utilized to create their music.

Beyond his involvement with YMO, Yukihiro Takahashi enjoyed a flourishing solo career, releasing classics like the Afro-Brazilian and French pop-influenced "Saravah!" (1979) and the new wave masterpiece "Neuromantic" (1981). He also produced songs for various pop artists in Japan and overseas, including Sandii & The Sunsetz and Pierre Barouh. Collaborating with Steve Jansen, he co-created the quintessential synth-pop anthem "Stay Close" (1986).

In later years, heavily influenced by his long-time collaborator Cornelius, Yukihiro Takahashi formed the glitch pop duo Sketch Show with Mr. Hosono. Together, they continued to explore and experiment with the new forms of music in the new millennium. Their songs ingeniously deconstructed music electronically, utilizing intermittent and repetitive clips and bits of sound while preserving the inherent human soul that always resonated in their compositions.

Impressively, his career spans more than four decades of solo records, collaborations, productions, and session credits. Tracking his extensive body of work might be challenging, but one thing is certain: we will always hear echoes of his brilliance in today's music and those to come in the future. Yukihiro Takahashi's legacy remains an enduring influence on the music world.

Lorenz Linder, the Leipzig based DJ and producer better known as Mix Mup has consolidated a strong identity of records over his 20 years of releasing music, building a stellar reputation of crafting creative abstracted groovers and house music with minimal embellishments. We caught up Linder to discuss taking his Molto alias on the road, his passion for building musical based sculptures and his 3rd solo EP for Will Bankhead's The Trilogy Tapes. Reflecting his current November mood, this hour-long Truancy Volume demonstrates the off-kilter and rhythmically devious nature of a Mix Mup record to a tee. A familiar and gratifying territory for those who have regularly followed his solo work and collaborations alongside frequent co-conspirator Kassem Mosse, the mix opens with a track from Mix Mup's forthcoming Trilogy Tapes EP, before ruggedly detailing into tracks from Benjamin Brunn, unreleased Even Tuell, past Truancy Volume mixers Space Afrika and local Leipzig talent CFM.
