Does anyone remember earlier this year when I took the Phantom Laboratories West mobile unit down to Portland, Oregon and made a few tracks while there?  (Probably not, but it happened!)  

This is one of the tracks that I brought with me.  I had most of the music done, actually, but I still didn't know what the track "was"--so, I gave it the temporary project name of "PDX" (the airport code for Portland, Oregon.  And I must have just plain forgotten about it, because I hadn't gone back to it since...until last night.    

I changed the arrangement, I added one new synth, I had fun with some fills and builds and...STILL didn't know what it was.  

It sounded really early techno pop-y, but with modern house/breaks instead of "cheesy Atari sounds" (props to Crash for that description of the retro sounding techno pop drums.)  The synth sounds I chose were a bit on the annoying side of sound design, but not unlistenably so--giving the track almost an 8-bit feel (except for the drums, as I've already said.)  

What would go with that?  Probably some robot/computer voice work--but that is a well that I drink from far too often.  

...but that answer came to me so quickly, I didn't want to dismiss it out of hand.  

So, I gave it some thought...and I realized that, in pop cuture, there are only a few truly recognizable robotic voices out there...and, perhaps, the MOST recognizable one is, of course, Professor Falken's unleashed Joshua program--the one that almost brought nuclear armageddon to the entire Earth (if not for guilt ridden Matthew Broderick and plucky Ally Sheedy.)  

Was it too obvious?  You'll have to tell me.  I think it works.  (My favorite part is late in the song, when you start to hear and feel some sub bass rumble--that's not a musical part...that is the sound they used when a nuclear bomb landed on a target--all of those circles on the various maps sounded like what's deep in the background of this track, towards the end.  

With the Doomsday Clock at the closest time before midnight ever registered, perhaps it is an important lesson to learn--that when it comes to Global Thermonuclear War, the only winning move is not to play.  

And wouldn't we all rather play a nice game of chess?  

Be like Joshua.  Learn.  Then shut down.  Then play chess.

When I wrote radio ads, I described my style as a 2x4 to the face.  When I was a nightclub dj, I found ways to make the big hits fun...and dropped in things people knew but could never expect to hear in the mix.  When I was a stand-up, I reveled in traditional structure, and I could make things really obvious so everyone in the room couldn't fail to get it.  

So, you might be as surprised as I am that I managed to make an Interbay track that could be considered "deep"--but I think today's track, "Deep Blue Spark", earns that description.  

...at least, if you can find any electro track to be deep, that is.  

I think so.  Especially when this track does contain some  house elements to it.  

...and once again, there's another element at play here that I would be VERY surprised if the Venn Diagram of people who love dance music and the music from which one of today's vocal sample has been sourced from, is any larger than "exactly my size".  

But that's ok.  I think you can still enjoy the track not knowing.  

The track is a vibe--the kind of vibe you might get on a 3am radio mixshow for people wandering home after spending Saturday night dancing in the clubs.  

Oh, until a fog horn of a bass lead emerges from the deepness, like a Kaiju rising up to either crush or save Tokyo.  That'll wake you up if you're getting sleepy while driving your friends home.

I think this could work in the clubs, maybe not Saturday night peak time, but I think you could play this when the crowd is hot...or to help warm the crowd up.  

(Of course, it's been an eternity since I've been behind the decks--things could certainly have changed since Ye Olden Discotheque Days.  (Did you know that back in my day, you didn't need a laptop or a thumbdrive to dj?  It's true--believe it or not!)  

I like this one, but I'm generally more biased to liking every Interbay track than your average person.  (I think you'd agree.)  

The only way to find out if YOU like it would be to give it a listen.  If you do like it, give it a like, consider reposting or sharing it with friends.  You might want to leave a comment (the encouraging ones are...ummmm...encouraged?)  If you have a playlist where this track would fit in well, go ahead and add it!  

But, most of all, I'd ask politely that you give this page a follow.  There is a brand new track uploaded EVERY SINGLE DAY (so far)--in a variety of styles (still need to delve in to either an Alt-Country track or a Big Band track yet (well, at least not on SoundCloud. ;) )  

You don't know what you'll get on any given day, which is part of the fun!  (I think--but again, I may be more biased than anyone else.)

(Before checking out this latest Interbay track, as a favor to me, could you check out YESTERDAY'S Interbay track, "Salvation In Our Chemistry" please!  Why is it always when I'm particularly proud of a track, the algorithm decides that no one should listen to it???  I think it is worth a listen...and when you're done there, come back and check out this track!)  

So, what's this then?  An Interbay track dropped in the wee hours of the morning?  Yes--as today will be a travel day for me, I don't want to risk not getting a chance to drop a track and end over 400 straight days of sharing a brand new Interbay track.  

This one certainly feels like a track left over from when I was posting videos on Facebook--and that's because this was scheduled to be such a track, only for me to switch over to dropping tracks here on SoundCloud.  

It has sat on a shelf in the Vault for a while as I pondered if this track fit the "all tracks posted to SoundCloud MUST have a vocal component"--and I've just now decided that it does!  (It doesn't have MUCH of a vocal component, and I actually did add two parts from what it had been when it was put on the shelf.)  

This is very "A Clockwork Orange" soundtrack by Wendy Carlos in vibe...except about 2/3rds of the way through when it suddenly goes in a very New Order ("Brotherhood" era) direction...briefly.  Could there be a dance remix of this track some day?  

I'm asking.  Could there?  

More instrumental than most...and an obvious homage to one of my favorite movies of all time--this is still DEFINITELY Interbay.
