  As a fine artist, my practice is comprised predominantly, but not exclusively of sound and performance art. I seek out and investigate ideas centring on sound with respect to time. How does sound transform over time, both in an auditory sense and in a conceptual sense? Through the use of found sound, recorded sound, synthesised sound and the spoken word, I demonstrate potential answers to this question. The two main areas of my practice; sound and performance, are combined to vocalise these answers. The audio work I create serves as a platform on which to investigate and experiment with ideas about sound and time, whereas through performance I am able to articulate and realise these ideas to others. My performances are often a combination of projected sounds, live vocal descriptions of sounds and processes, and the recording and playback of live sounds.

  Because my practice deals with time, I often turn to and make use of a range of equipment from different periods in my own life time. Old speakers, recording devices and sound producing objects that refer to nostalgia and specific events in my life that relate to the concepts I investigate. I use this equipment in such a way as to, in itself, create a visual and material path in which the progression of time can be seen. This is to create a tangible mirror image of the path on which the sounds themselves travel. 

  My fascination in sound stems from both my father and a passion for music. Music has always been part of my life. I was raised in a musical family and have always had an interest in traditional music, music that has a history, music that tells a story. My father’s studies into ethnomusicology presented me with questions about ethnic music and identity. He inspired in me a questioning pursuit for how sounds come to be, and how they can come to define a person’s identity. He introduced to me ideas about how the use of sound (e.g. through language or music) a person’s culture or even geographical background can be identified as easily as a flag they fly, the colour of their skin or the beliefs they may have. This made me realise that sound can be as articulate in defining one’s identity as elaborately and eloquently as any visual gesture..
