Before the Spotlight: The Rise of The Creatures in 1960s Montreal.
In 1963, while Beatlemania gripped the UK and Motown was shaking up the charts, something electric was taking shape a world away—in a small Montreal apartment. Four teenagers, fueled by the raw energy of the British rock invasion and the soulful pull of American R&B, came together to form a band. With the support of our teenage manager—and his ever-patient mother who let us rehearse in their apartment—we found our footing, even if the neighbors weren’t thrilled about it.
We called ourselves The Creatures, inspired by the wave of iconic names that shaped our musical DNA: The Everley Brothers, The Beatles, The Stones, The Animals, Herman's Hermits, Dave Clark Five, Buddy Holly & The Crickets, The Ventures, The Surfaris, The Searchers, The Kinks, The Rascals, Paul Revere & The Raiders, The McCoys, The Righteous Brothers, Paul Butterfield Blues Band, James Brown, The Temptations, Marvin Gaye, Ray Charles, Joe Tex, Little Richard, and so many more. In a matter of months, we had three full sets of covers—both instrumentals and vocals—ready to roll.
It was an exhilarating time. While Petula Clark sang about going “Downtown,” we were playing four nights a week—two for rehearsals, two for gigs. Our sound was shaped by rock, funk, and R&B, and as we played together, we grew tighter, louder, and more ambitious.
Our first professional gig was at École Lajoie in Outremont, Quebec. We didn’t have the best gear, but we had something just as powerful—drive, rhythm, and chemistry. Soon, The Creatures started catching fire. With new equipment in hand and word spreading, we were playing packed shows at high schools, clubs, and major venues. One of the biggest was Dave Boxer’s legendary Bonaventure Curling Club, where 3,000 fans would turn up on a Saturday night. Boxer, a well-known DJ on CFCF Radio, was instrumental in giving Canadian bands their shot—including us.
But the peak came when we played the Montreal Forum the same stage that once welcomed The Beatles—at Dave Boxer’s "Bring Your Lunch Hopsville," alongside ten of Canada’s top acts. The show ran from 1pm to 10pm, and the Forum was filled wall-to-wall with screaming teenagers. For us, it was unforgettable.
The Montreal music scene in the ’60s was alive with sound and style—from Carnaby Street fashions to the explosion of long hair, bell-bottoms, and platform shoes. Local legends like, The JayBees, The Haunted, Les Classels, Trixie & The Inmates, Bartholomew Plus Three, The Rabble, The Mersey Makers, We Five, and All of Us, helped define an era. And in that mix stood The Creatures—young, hungry, and chasing the beat.
Though the band eventually split in the mid-60s for personal reasons, the spirit of The Creatures never faded. Today, that spirit lives on through the original music of Morr Serber, whose songwriting carries the echoes of a time when four teens from Montreal believed they could change the world—with guitars, harmonies, and a dream.

Dan Boyko is a seasoned musician and songwriter with a passion for creating soul-stirring melodies and heartfelt lyrics. Hailing from Hamilton, known as a Hammer Town Hellraiser, Dan's musical journey has been marked by dedication and perseverance.
Growing up in the vibrant Hamilton music scene, Dan honed his skills by jamming and gigging with local music favorites like Teenage Head, Forgotten Rebels, Calamity Jane, T.O. Joker, Spec Jennings, and Dan Dyer. During this time, he took vocal lessons from the renowned Brian Vollmer of Helix and the Diana Ropolaski School of Voice, enriching his musical journey.
After making the brave decision to pursue a career in music, Dan devoted himself to honing his skills and creating marketable songs that leave a lasting impression. Music became his true calling, and his songwriting journey has been deeply personal, reflecting his life experiences and the sacrifices made to follow his passion.
As a 50-year-old musician, Dan's dedication to his craft is evident. He has composed a collection of powerful tracks, including "Lost Cause," a soulful ballad that delves into the struggles and self-awareness of a restless spirit, and "Confessions of a Singer," a heartfelt reflection on past mistakes and the search for forgiveness. His lyrical prowess shines through in "It's All About You," a captivating ode to someone who has left an indelible mark on his heart.
Dan's musical history boasts an impressive resume. For 15 years, he toured and recorded with his band Three Ways From Sunday, releasing three full-length albums, "Toy Soldier," "South East Asia," and "Isore." The band left its mark in the Canadian music landscape, recording at prestigious studios like Grant Ave Studios and Catherine North Studios. Additionally, Dan made his mark in the heavy metal scene with the band E.O.R. (Edge of Reason), releasing "The Machine," a 9-song CD that gained popularity on college radio and numerous music websites.
In 2020, Dan's songwriting talents earned him recognition when he won a Niagara songwriting contest with his song "Scream!" This success led to collaborations with musical giants like Dirk VerBuren (Megadeth), Caleb Bingham (formerly of Five Finger Death Punch), Alessandro Medri (formerly of Figure Of Six), and producer Seth VonPaulous from the legendary LA studio "The Boutique." Together, they embarked on "The Unforgiven Album," an ambitious project featuring an off-the-floor recording approach inspired by rock legends like Led Zeppelin and The Rolling Stones.
Under the new moniker "Dan Boyko," he embraced a new sound that blended southern rock with country elements, coining the term "Gruntry." This undeniable new sound gave birth to captivating tracks like "Modern Day Nursery Rhyme," hailed by Sleeping Bag Studio Magazine's editor as a song that "rocks the gods."
With unforgettable vocal hooks and a powerful delivery, Dan Boyko's music resonates with audiences, leaving them in awe of the raw emotion and infectious energy. As of 2024, there are 2,781 billionaires & 58 million millionaires, while 2.8 billion people around the world cannot afford a healthy diet (35% of the global population). This greed, corruption, and injustice needs to end. 

It should be abundantly clear that it won't end until more people stand up together and demand real change, equality, and freedoms for all. There are billions of us and only millions of them, so let the numbers work in our favor.
