A capercaillie hen decided to land in the pine tree where I had placed the droprig recorder over night. Some very nice small talk can be heard before the Song Thrush sings straight into the microphones.

Capercaillie small talk

A wide and deep, gently rhythmically hypnotic, mallee heathland dawn, from an evening to morning recording made with a mid-side rig utilising an omnidirectional mid microphone. (Relaxed listening with good quality headphones with flat frequency response, especially open-backed, at a moderate volume, is ideal. But what you hear, and how you hear it, depends, most of all, on what you're listening for, and  how you're listening. This is not a 'pop' recording (and no apologies for that).)

Different Colours Made Of Tears

Left is east, right is west.
The sounds from in front blend with those from behind, both to the left and to the right.
The variable breeze pervades throughout.
The sky above is ever so gradually lightening, and all around, beings are awakening.
Like forever, the natural mystery of Mind is happening.

2025.11.02 A Dawn between Two Forests. Spring.

Saturday early morning in a time of sunrise recorded on my balcony. Many small birds has morning play around microphones, distant church bells, there is also river hum and little traffic.

I’m working now on my Northern Europe Cold Spring recordings which I made in April and May of 2023, and I can’t help posting some sneak peeks. I arrived at a large lake at half past 9 PM May 2, almost an hour after sunset, but the twilight was light, I dropped a glance at the lake’s surface and was astonished how lucky I was. The lake was still covered with ice with a spot of water near the shore, and there were beautiful swans diving around, feeding and talking to each other with tender, pleading voices. These were rare Tundra Swans (Cygnus columbianus) getting some rest on their way further to the North. From time to time an Eurasian Bittern (Botaurus stellaris) was booming on the left in the tangle of dry reed. I instantly set up my Quad rig and started recording. This lake was always windy, whether I visited it in summer, autumn or spring. To my luck the wind was light and I’ve got 6 minutes of clean Tundra Swans’ voices. Then I made some photos and the wind immediately got stronger, so the next 40 minutes of my recording were spoiled by its roar, but I’ve already got my trophy.
Tundra Swans are a rare endangered species, in Russia they are included in the National Red Book and hunting is forbidden.

This recording was made using Nevaton MC50 Quad microphone and Sound Devices MixPre 10 II recorder. The video contains a stereo mix of mostly the front pair with a bit of rear pair added for the wider image. Eurasian Bittern's song lies in the range of 120-140 Hz, so to hear it please listen on good headphones or wide frequency range speakers.
