"Interbay's got a cowbell and they're going to use it."  

Spinning the clock back 30 to 40 years or more (I am SO old) to capture some vibes from early house music productions to imbue that spirit into today's Interbay daily track drop.  Although there's a little more going on than you might expect, I did limit myself to a smaller palette for this one.  

The drums don't sound like cannons being shot off in a cathedral--they sound like the drum machines they are.  The bass isn't all growly or threatening your downstairs neighbors with sleepless nights, it sounds like a synthesizer making a fairly traditional bass sound.  

With all the tools available to us as modern music producers, it can be a relief to decide to make a track based on limiting your options--allowing you to focus on vibe, groove, and feel.  

(I remember watching Eliminate show his process during "Audio Combat" sessions, before I was given the keys to Phantom Laboratories West for my own work...and he bemoaned the process of choosing a snare sound.  I didn't get it at the time.  "Just pick a good sounding snare," I thought, "what's so hard about that?"  I'd watch him sample/scroll through a seemingly endless folder of snare samples and I thought that any of them would work just fine.  And that was what was causing the stress.  Any of them could work--so, how do you pick the one that will work best?  It reminds me of going to the optomotrist and having to choose between A and B when both look kind of the same--and they always sounds so annoyed when they have to present the same choice to you again because you're indecisive.  Well, I understand now, Nate.  And opportunities like I've taken today, to narrow the candidates list, is occasionally a good way to unburden yourself and move forward.  That's not advice to Nate--Nate knows.  Nate is wise and Nate is inspirational...probably why I made the decision to make Interbay a thing.  That's me leaving a hard copy reminder for myself the next time I get frustrated with the process.)  

A classic sample, a nod to a movie that for a certain generation (in other words, mine) was...memorable, to say the least.  (Formative, interesting, eye opening, heartrate increasing...hopefully you can trace the outline of what I'm getting at without me having to point it out, too obviously, for you), and some minimal house grooves leads to an Interbay track that makes me feel like Robocop, from Robocop 2, after he's rebooted himself to delete all of the unnecessary directives that were pumped into him by corporate overreach.  

(It makes want to get Kane, once and for all, and stop the city's dependence on Nuke.  Why is THAT something I remember off the top of my head without any effort and yet I can't remember what time the meeting of SEMPA is tonight?)  

This track isn't going to change the world...but it might be just the thing to start the vibes flowing towards a wonderful weekend.  It is my Thursday gift to you!
