Body Tools Sessions LIVE on VPN Radio (Every First Saturday from 1pm - 4pm PST on Twitch)

This Spring, we had our inaugural New Palm campout in the high desert of Johnson Valley for two days and two nights of seasoned raging. After several years of delays, it was quite the feeling to have this come to fruition.

 We revisit our seasonal mix series with an approximation of a set from that weekend by New Palm regular Kevin Lipman, aka @under_current, who closed out our first night. Sure-footed, stoic, and moody, Kevin brought out the desert bleak with patient selections and sprinklings of his original work.
 
The campout was a veritable group effort, so thanks to everyone who came and did it right, and as always, big thanks to core enablers Carter & Leah for the brains and sound, Robbie & Mark for the muscles, Saba for the hot car, John for the tasteful shade, Michael, Tim & Sabrina for the libations, Alka, Josiah, Cha Cha (+ others) for the sustenance, and Phil for the wonderful eye.

Body Tools Sessions: 001 w/ Resident: undercurrent - Live on VPN Radio (10/06/23)

Undercurrent is the alias of LA based producer Kevin Lipman who released a recent minimal breaks EP, on vinyl via New Palm records, that has been making waves on dance floors around the world. He has also previously released work on Body Tools first Compilation entitled Worldwide Dance: Vol 1. For his set at FLOW:002 he dished out a full hour of all original and unreleased material featuring his signature blend of minimal breaks, dub techno, and post dubstep flavors.

FLOW is a curated monthly event that seeks to promote the cutting edge of LA’s thriving underground music community, hosted in the friendly and intimate environment of The Love Song Bar in DTLA. Each event is centered around a special guest, with Body Tools International residents acting as direct support to the headliner.

Hailing from Baltimore, but residing in LA for over 10 years is @body_tools_international co-founder DJ Economy. As both a producer and DJ, he explores a range of styles while always channeling an ear for percussion and jazzy gritty grooves with the off kilter sounds of early Warp Records releases. With a versatile style that spans BPM’s and genres he can usually be found playing something around deep house, jungle, or downtempo, with a healthy dose of dub delays and precise long mixes.

“I set out to blend from disco/house land into electro and breaks territory mostly as an excuse to play some new tracks and dust off others that I hadn't played in ages. As someone who doesn't primarily play vinyl, I was surely out of my comfort zone to be trying some of the mixes I chose for the first time, on a setup that I wasn't comfortable with. I made plenty of mistakes and corrected most, but some were too far gone to save. DJing is, to me, the art of gracefully flailing through the air, and I'm honestly stoked with how the mix sounds. LA-based Saba Fazeli, known as Zahremaar, is a first-generation Iranian DJ, design engineer, and devoted environmentalist with deep roots in the Bay Area. Zahremaar's sound is distinguished by a profound appreciation for minimalist, gritty, and, most importantly, groovy rhythms — whether in techno, electro, breaks, house, or disco, a sweaty time is the only guarantee. Zahremaar holds residencies at Printshop Club and Gradient Campout and is a co-founder of Choppy! (@eatchoppy on IG), a hybrid meat company aimed at reducing global meat consumption. Rave spaces have the power to define and change the tone of our social fabric, and that the next phase of revolutionary advocacy our community must embrace must center climate justice.
