Following the recent collaborative SERWED II and Square Fauna albums on West Mineral Ltd. and Firecracker Recordings respectively, Flaty is back on his own ANWO RECORDS with an album titled RAILZ.

A year in the making, it’s a product of solitary contemplative pursuit, an exploration of a metaspace where the varied worlds inherent to Flaty‘s artistic sensibility coexist, blend, and collide true to the original kinship between electro and hip-hop. The altered footwork and fine-grained dubstep sonic structures, the freeform soundscapes and refracted beats, the consistently heavy bass and eventful razor-sharp high frequencies of the album are all bred, built, mixed, and mastered single-handedly by Flaty who has also designed all the artwork and packaging.

In comparison with the artist’s previous productions, the tone is colder, the approach more detached, while the substance is no less personal and the experience neither less diverse nor less intense. The artistic, cultural, and technological styles and eras of the last half-century fuse and productively dissolve in the utopian interferences of the LP.

Expect RAILZ to be presented as the soundtrack to a forthcoming series of ANWO STUDIO collaborative audio-visual live performances.

Haron’s Taxa EP dips into a world of fizzing electronics and draws from it four potent club mutations. 

Having explored spacious ambient on 2018’s well-received Wandelaar, the Dutch producer turns his attention towards full-body rhythms. These newly prepared compositions, the first club release on Queeste, are dappled with synthesised colour and unexpected timbral shifts, aligning the producer with global bass permutations while maintaining his own playful course.

The skittering dancefloor percussion of opening track ‘Drosera’ immediately signals this change in direction, leading effortlessly into the tightly coiled drums of ‘Benthos’ whose name is taken from the community of organisms that dwell on the seabed. In a nod to Wandelaar’s serene tones, the track ends with weightless ambience alongside snippets of human voices, a single moment of stillness on a release elsewhere defined by movement. ‘Pantala’ is pristine computerised dancehall teeming with disembodied samples and impressionistic swirls of noise before Taxa ends with ‘Pincertail’ whose bustling syncopations recall UK funky at its nimblest.

No less evocative than his beatless work, on this EP Haron has crafted his own idiosyncratic abstraction of club music, one imbued with joyful melodies and a giddy, pleasingly destabilising sensibility.

Firmly established among NNT’s weirdest and most watchable units, Metal Preyers slug screwed anthems on their killer 2nd mixtape for the central/east African powerhouse. Responsible for some of 2020’s strangest highlights with their eponymous debut, plus a single-sided 12” and the ‘Preying Well’ mixtape, the project now gathers their late night energies at a wickedly knackered slant across two sides of original compositions patched into a snaking tale of psychedelic torment and grouching grooves that pick up where they left off, deep in the underbelly of Kampala after dark.

Under the cryptic title of ‘432+’, a grippingly slow sequence of events and smeared styles occur, following an elusive thread of sozzled logic between bleary ballads, drag-mode Afrobeat bangers, and absolutely killer patches of splayed drill drums, into more gutturally psychoactive, bad-belly turns of digital distortion and smeared Naija anthems that make way for viscous R&B and dematerialised noise. 

Quite simply, nobody else is making this kind of concentrated crud right now, striking the most vital balance of daring impressionism and rugged, druggy function that can’t help but suck listeners into its surreal temporality and psychedelic weltanschauung.

@kingsofty is the alias of Amos Turner a New Zealand born, Berlin-based artist and graphic designer. A passion for music formed the backbone of many of Amos’ creative projects which culminate as INDEX:Records, a record label Amos co-founded in 2017. As King Softy, Amos creates diverse sounds in the sphere of contemporary electronic music, moving swiftly between genres usually designed for larger sound systems, and supporting their emerging music community.
