Fresh off his recent release on Vancouver staple Pacific Rhythm, Toronto-based artist Emissive (real name Evan Vincent) has been doing bits in his hometown and beyond. His 'Wave Science' EP is a house masterpiece. By virtue of the reel-to-reel used in its production, we hear warm and saturated analogue drums underlying soulful synth stabs and funked basslines, ultimately creating a uniquely hazy cosmic funk feeling throughout the record. In addition to his solo work under the alias Emissive, he is also one half of the house music duo Active Surplus alongside his friend Ian Syrett. It's safe to say, we're huge fans of his work here at BB HQ. 

Aside from his production work, Emissive is also an incredible DJ - hosting a monthly show on n10.as radio as well as performing live sets in and around his beloved hometown of Toronto. A listen through his recorded sets paints a picture of a mature musician, clearly influenced by the early Black American pioneers of house music - we thoroughly recommend you checking those sets out for yourselves too ; )

For the non-montrealers Pascale Project might just be a producer on their radar, but for those living in this city and involved one way or another with the scene she is this wild, poised and enthusiastic force that simply can not go unnoticed. Whether unleashing 140 bpm rave joints with a punk attitude or crafting her extremely singular brand of lush and enticing house tracks (songs?), she just pushes forward, not second guessing her impulses towards dancefloor ecstasy in all its form.

Teaming up with La Rama -another essential force keeping Montreal dancefloors alive- Pascale is releasing a new EP, “Where’s The Party?”, where she finds herself asserting her will to dance and make you dance more than ever. We asked her a few questions about the new EP and her work. She was nice enough to let us know more about her process and to record a new entry in our Mixed-By series.

Corina MacDonald aka CMD has been busy recently, releasing two EPs in the last few months of 2021; Precarious Pursuit on Bandcamp and Social Factory Reset with the US label Fixed Rhythms. For Montrealers, her voice might be familiar from CKUT radio where she hosts the program Modular Systems every other Sunday. As a producer and DJ, she has performed at editions of MUTEK, Piknic Electronik, Igloofest, and in many of Montreal’s club nights and venues, where she fuses synth-laden aesthetics of acid, techno, electro, and house music. This mix is representative of some of her musical predispositions, setting the more abstract and ambient up against some techno and electro gems, mixing up the old guard and newcomers alike.

A staple within the Canadian scene, and eclectic as ever - just have a listen to some of his releases and you will notice how they vary considerably. Łukasz Seliga needs little introduction to anyone even roughly following Poland’s dance and electronic underground, as his contributions – as a live performer, producer, remixer or DJ –embellished the better part of its story. 

Between his solo endeavours under the slg moniker, and projects such as Casio pepe or Seltron 400, he has long traversed genres and sounds, aptly and joyfully, always staying true to his distinct musical vision rather than being prompted by periodic shifts of fancy.

On Sideways, his newest EP outing for Trance-Atlantyk, Łukasz appears under his own name – Seliga – for the first time, thus restating his identity and underlining the honesty of his craft.   

In a time when dance music tends to be driven increasingly by nostalgia, Seliga takes but a sip, ultimately eschewing it. As a result, the music we hear is more of a direct expression of his own abiding purpose – a lived, rather than re-lived experience, an auditory utopia, sung in a language the artist is deeply anchored in, but whose expressive qualities he seeks to enhance, and not simply exploit.

In French, "Bon Voyage" expresses good wishes to someone about to embark on a journey. 

Calling from Mars(eille), french producer Ndlss Seumar, a fresh newcomer who brings us summer before the hour, delivers four proggy, trance-oriented tracks. From energetic vibes to more dreamy but powerful melodies, the four tunes are brimming with emotion. 

'You Butter Be Bready', is like having French toast for breakfast- sweet house vibes with joyful stabs that provide the necessary energy for the coming day.
From there, the rest of the EP takes a psychedelic turn. 'Bon Voyage' makes us blast off, with its acid sounds and syncopated synth, towards Venus or 'The Sister Planet'. For this third track, heat increases, the bpm accelerates, the resonant textures mix to form a mind-bending groove. The last tune, 'Stompy Yeezy', is like landing, the first steps in a new environment. The deep and heavy bass plays with more melancholic melodies as if to say goodbye.

The duo of Nico Sé and Dimitri have been setting dancefloor ablaze recently with their resident nights at the Casa del Popolo with the Body Meta nights : International discothèque, next Body Meta will be on saturday! Perhaps what makes their partnerships successful is how their two different career paths led them to connect with each other, both sharing a passion for creativity and communicating emotions, feelings and stories to audiences.

Dimitri (Nasrallah) is a writer and editor who gained accolades and international recognition, having won the Hugh MacLennan Prize for fiction for one of his two novels, « Niko ». He is a lecturer at Concordia University in Montreal, teaching creative and essay writing since 2007.He has also worked in the past as a music journalist and critic, giving us a hint into how he took interest in exploring the medium that is music and how he can connect with audiences through music.

Nico Serrus (aka Nico Sé) is a self-taught multi-instrumentalist who took up DJ-ing during his time in Europe. Moving to Montreal in 2005, Nico continued on the path he had taken and pursued his studies of music by taking on producing. Now producing under the moniker of Agatha Jasper, he also might give you some insights on how to be a great selector, helping you out at Atom Heart record store in Montreal. In addition to producing and being one half of Body Meta, Nico is also the co-founder of Montreal-based Fur Trade Recordings.

Nico and Dimitri's Body Meta nights showcase musical jewels from all over the world, exploring the rich diversity and spectrum from different music genres that ultimately all makes us dance carelessly. Not afraid to take their audiences on a journey into the unknown and earning their trust in the process , Nico and Dimitri takes us to a different plane with a mix which they kindly provided us, composed of carefully selected tracks. Adding a cherry on top, they accepted to give us some of their time to answer some questions and give us the 4-1-1 on how their project came to be and the intent that drives their performances.
