Animix is back! I'm sooooo happy to be returning to the series with this new mix by local talent Hannah D (@hld). Brisbane's finest import, and curator of @thespacebetweenus, has recently taken the Melbourne scene by storm with her fun, groovy style & flawless skill. This mix is total euphoria, which I think really reflects the mood of the Melbourne scene at the moment in a (sort of) post-covid world.

Pat Brick aka DJ Life has been on a steady rise since his debut record released in 2019 with Echocentric Records, corresponding with the labels first release. The Aussie DJ and producer has since had a total of eight releases with prominent underground labels such as Dansu Discs, R.A.N.D. Muzik, and most recently, Lobster Theremin’s Distant Horizons sublabel. The energetic and fun take at combining prog, trance and techno has landed DJ Life’s name amongst the top in his league of sound.

We caught up with DJ Life on this edition of MIXED BY to discuss a bit about his music production, influences and the Australian underground dance music scene.

Although somewhat a new kid on the block when it comes to producing dance music, Maara has been shifting gears in the scene and is killing it on all fronts as of late. With a killer debut EP landing on NAFF Recordings earlier this year, followed by a recent follow-up on Daniel Rincon run record label ISLA, her productions hit the sweet spot between the ethereal ambience of hazy afterhours ecstasy and tripped-out techno leanings. Wasting no time, Maara dives deep into a propulsive assembly of proggy house delights, blissful trance grooves and hypnotic techno, as she supplies our latest mix and we catch up to hear the latest. Celebrating the hundredth Animix with some of Animalia's very own - a special live set recorded at the Animalia event in May by Ebbs n Flow (@ebbsnflow), the brainchild of Will Holden & Dashiell. Will is @undergroundcityloop, and one half the iconic Melbourne chuggy trance duo @hybridmn. Dash (@dashiell) has released solo tunes on Animalia, and also makes up one third of Animalia's very own boyband, Ménage (@menagerecords). 

In their new project, the two have paired together to create cheeky, steppy tunes which delve into tech house, garage & d'nb inspired sounds. Ebbs n Flow released a couple of tunes on Animalia's recent compilations and have much more in the works.. so happy to share this mix with everyone for number 100!

Bolam is someone who has been on our radar for some time. Hailing from the Shetland Islands and now based in Malmö, he has been making waves in the local scene, as well as picking up a lot of traction with his own music and Earworm podcast series. 

Having released tracks with our good friends Holding Hands as well as 2 EPs on Space Dust, his varied and technical production style sits somewhere between breaks, trance and tech house. As well as his skills as a producer, he's a fantastic DJ with a commitment to digging deep - this mix is testament to that!

For Rotations 26 we have Activator — the newly formed project from two Naarm DJs Jaevin aka Vitamin DJ / @vitamin_D_J  and Clay aka Toorak Cowboy / @claywaddell.

Two of the most warm and vibrant lovers of the Naarm music scene, both Jaevin and Clay's infectious energy translates into their sets which are pure, unadulterated fun.

Progressive, trancey and with a little euro-house flava, this mix is nearly 2 hours of non-stop energy with a few unreleased local tracks ;)

It’s no longer news to anyone that Australian electronic music propelled itself to international spotlight in recent years. There is an infinite array of up and coming talent emerging from down under. Amongst them are the dynamic duo of DJ Sarah and Georgia Bird, known as In2stellar, whose collaboration started in 2017. 

Their energetic sets influenced by 90s dance music, fusing gritty breaks, UK bass and proggy bass lines are a candid insight into their true selves that we are pleased to discover through this insightful conversation.
