Christopher Keisuke Iwatsu, who simply goes by @keisukemusic, is a UK based producer well-known for establishing the forward-thinking party series Ossia in Manchester in 2017. Now based in London, Mr. Iwatsu has dedicated himself to working on his own music, with plans to hit the underground by storm later this year with his debut vinyl release on Phonica Records.

Until then, Keisuke has plenty of music to whet the appetite of techno and deep house aficionados around the world. Titled Year of the Crane, the producer recently self-released an EP that features 3 brand new tracks. Although I have not listened to Keisuke before, I was immediately impressed by the range he exhibits on each of his tracks. From the peak-time shenanigans displayed in its title track, to the subdued, hypnotic swings of 'Seconds,' all the way down to the simplistic, yet regenerative qualities of 'Born' - Keisuke shows that he is more than capable of supplying the mood, no matter the occasion. With such a variety of melodies at this disposable, it will be interesting to see where Keisuke takes his productions as he continues to develop his own signature sound. He will certainly be one to watch out for during the upcoming months.

When your roots have a broad geographical diversity, it’s very likely this will resonate in the music you make. This is certainly the case with Alma Negra and their new release on Heist. It seems they have embraced all their cultural influences more than ever in their new ‘Dakar Disco EP’. The whole record oozes class and musicality and feels like a carefree collage of the rich musical lives they live. The three originals on this EP vary in tempo and energy, giving you something for each moment of the day or night. They are accompanied by a remix from none other than the Japanese master of cosmic funk: Kuniyuki.

The EP’s closing track ‘Back in town’, is perhaps the clubbiest track of the set. A friendly acid line squeaks over tribal drums & chants and you immediately get pulled in by a great balafon hook. You can really hear how the guys feel at ease combining these worldly elements with modern electronics and ‘Back in town’ is a great example on how to blend these sonic worlds.

3 years have past since the release of the fortunea Cookies Vol. 2 ep. Now, the Viennese label is resurrecting their various artists collection with a third entry.

The A-side begins with a smooth deep house piece by LeSale. Dreamy strings and sparkling pads chime together with a thriving funky bassline. A beautiful opener for estival sunset moments.

Peletronic and Klaus Benedek team up together on A2 with some ‚Analogue Kinda Funk‘. Finished during the lockdown while sending the project back and forth over the web, this track gives you an eerie and compelling feeling of the Zeitgeist we are living in right now. Dark reverberant percs, a crunchy guitar and a stunning drum beat will turn your flat into a club for sure.

The B-side features a new member on the fortunea roster. Dzc. is a young and talented dj and producer and this is her first production that is coming out. It’s called ‚The Truth‘ and is a well made peaktime track and a homage of early to late 90s house, techno and trance music.

Lukas Poellauer finishes this record. But not alone! He brought Schreder with him and together they make a ‚Midnight Ride‘ through a melancholic, acid-fulfilled desert.

Slipping between states of rhythmic formality (Duck Tape) and freeform soundscapes (Empting), Burnt EP vibrates on multiple levels. Threads of hip hop and lo-fi house (Burnt) embroider the tracklisting, uncovering a finessed sound that is at once both mellowed and full of intent.

Dan Only returns for his third release on Dirt Crew Recordings with his Deciduous Dubs EP. This release sees the Toronto-native continuing his journey into new musical territories, leaving behind the past and rebuilding his framework from scratch. Armed with Akai Samplers, 90s Romplers and some tried and true Roland classics, this release explores sounds that were informed by Dubstep, Hardcore, House and Techno.

The release opens with “Gateway Shuffle”. The half-time drums and breakbeats link it back to early dubstep and reinforce the ghostly harmonies that glide throughout. Warping basses, deep subs and distant voices welcome you into the sonic world of this release.

“Terraforming” gives you hope in the unknown. The digital pads wash in as the meandering melodies invite you in to take a leap of faith out into the open. A deep sub forms among the all familiar four-on-the-floor kick patterns, providing the foundation needed to lose yourself in groove. By the end, you’re dancing across new ground in a trance-like state.

“It’s Inside You” gets to the root of it all. Stripped back and ever-evolving, the bouncing bass line and shapeshifting landscape contorts around you as this techno groover pummels forward. This one is heady and contemplative and all about self-discovery on the dance floor.

We end our trip with “Macrodose”. Diving through twisting basses and breakbeat science, you’re taken deeper and deeper into the rabbit hole, much farther than you anticipated. There’s a stark contrast between the reality you once knew and the one you are now in. If you can push through the peak you’ll be welcomed by a euphoric afterglow and strong sense of clarity.

Underground duo Rein rise enigmatically out of the ether and announce themselves to the world with their first ever label release, having put out a whole host of self-released goodness in the past.
