West Coast mainstay maverick Dave Aju launches his anticipated new artist imprint Elbow Grease with this timelessly sublime dance floor trip, dripping with outer-space soul and deep ocean-floor sonics. “X17”, a reference to the hypothetical particle and potential Fifth Force discovery, is equal parts warm and cold, smooth and ruff, as a raw UR-schooled electro rhythm base plows through various known musical barriers, adorned with worldly percussion hits, moving synth textures, subtle jazz motifs and vocal incantations.

As one of the last sonic transmissions put to tape at the mighty yet now-defunct Machine Limited/G-Son Studios of The Beastie Boys’ fame and legacy in Atwater Village LA, it’s fit with a solid spine via a driven TR-909, lush OB-Xa leads and PolySix pads, a serpentine SH-101 arp and tight Linn Drum layers. The generously unfolding “Main Mix” is accompanied by both a potent “Rhythm Dub” stripped back for maximum impact, and an ambient high “Viiibe” version offering a more immersive listen and alternative options for adventurous DJs to work into a mix as they feel. A fine intro to the genre-defiant, focus-on-each-piece Elbow Grease credo.

But to make them memorable and something to come back to time and time again is something else entirely! Still, Hanna – alias of Warren Harris – does it again. After the release of Love All, Contrafact Records proudly welcomes him back with the Skate and Flow EP. It demonstrates the artist’s tremendous skill and the basis for his continuous popularity within the Detroit House Scene, in which Harris is deeply rooted.

Hanna’s groovy melodies gently kick in. Especially of note here is a masterly smooth collaboration with Jeru the Damaja! Together, the three tracks on this record form a perfect – should we say crucial? - ingredient to moments of total relaxation.

The critically acclaimed “South Side” LP from Italian maestro Sofatalk receives the remix treatment on Broken District, with 4 remixes by Contours, Jus Jam, Tour-Maubourg and Warren Xclnce.

Given the diversity and musical richness of the original release, it was a fertile ground for a remix exercise... and the resulting package is a surprising combination of Breaks, Acid, Dub music and House.
We start with French talent Tour-Maubourg: a natural choice after his impressive and versatile “Paradis Artificiels” album on Pont Neuf Records. Here he delivers a Dub mix of “Ella”, retaining the warm atmosphere of the original track, with a deep and elegant Jamaican Dub aesthetic.

The second remix comes from Manchester artist Contours. The producer established himself as a steady name in the UK Electronic scene for the past few years, with outstanding releases on Rhythm Section, Shall Not Fade and ANMA Records just to name a few. On his “No Frills” remix, he keeps the jazzy, Broken Beat drums from Sofatalk and adds a strong 4/4 kick, giving the original track a real push. The remix then evolves into an Acid House/T echno production with Contours layering down an acid bassline carefully carved for big room dancefloors.

Warren Xclnce (from UK duo Kassian) steps up for the remix of “Raw Ivy”. The London-based producer offers a warm, colourful House revision of the original track. The smart part? As a subtle artist with wide influences, Warren preserves the jazzy elements but adds a delicate touch of Tech-House, boosting the Sofatalk production.

Finally, Broken District’s co-founder Jus Jam closes the EP with his ‘Only Cuts’ remix of “South Side”. He delivers an incredibly smart version of the track, only created with samples taken from the original track. The result: a high-powered Breaks tune with beautifully layered synth pads giving a touch of nostalgia and that light atmospheric feeling only Jus Jam could add.

Releasing a remix EP is a delicate thing to do. Broken District here succeeds by combining artists with different sensibilities and inspirations, creating an overall feeling of wide variety, yet with a strong identity backed by the original work from Sofatalk.

With previous releases on Delusions of Grandeur, Voyeurythm and more, UK producer Ben Sun delivers a gorgeous blend of deep textures that hearken back to the golden era of NY and Chicago with his ‘Distant Messenger EP’ on Razor-N-Tape.

The A-side, ‘Transmission’ has all the vibey goodness of an early Strictly Rhythm record, while ‘Sable Sun’ scuba dives into Larry Heard territory with lush pad swells and squelching acid lines. On the flip, the emotive motion of ‘Tremors’ builds through hypnotic arpeggiated synths, a slow-rolling bassline and crystalline melodies, and the record finishes in proto-house territory with the Peech Boys era Larry Levan inspired ‘Red Light’. This EP may wear its influences on its sleeve, but it looks (and sounds) classy as hell.

The 24th release of Sengiley has been in preparation and languishing for a long time, like aged dry wine in a French castle cellar, a French bouquet of young talents from Awlies & Véronique Samsung on their original Spot The Difference EP!

This experimental release is a dynamic and hypnotic journey where the languid and experimental sound of Awlies replaces the expressive and driving versions of the duo Véronique Samsung. Individually, Véronique Samsung is a living duo, born after a decade of collaboration between Clement Cosse and Tom Nomine, in 2019 in Nantes (France). The project has recently been marked by several great experimental releases and their virtuoso live show with drum machines, synthesizers and guitar, which showed their professionalism, seriousness of intentions and noticeable recognition.

Awlies, hidden in his Parisian studio in the middle of his tower of analog instruments, between a mpc and a cassette recorder, wants to produce a music without rules. A bit nostalgic, he naively seeks to find the electronic music of yesteryear based on contemporary melodic structures.

His part on the EP remains a plan without a projected artistic direction, like a bottle in the sea. Here, Awlies wanted to try deep-house, he tried.
