Coming fresh off the limited 7” re-release of the unsung 1999 deep garage classic “Tomorrow People” which featured the first official recordings of Grammy nominated vocalist Gregory Porter, Teflon Dons return with the first new EP on their Worldship Music imprint in 18 years. Notably, this is also the first solo-produced release from Aaron Paar under the Teflon Dons guise since the “Planet Eater” EP in 1995. After a variety of reissues on Jay Simon’s Must Have Records and Jeremy Underground’s M.L.I.U., renewed interest in their material led Aaron to put the finishing touches on these SP1200 produced tracks originally written from 1995-1997. With a title inspired by the Burrell Brothers’ legendary NY Housin’ Authority collaboration, each track represents an homage to a housing project in the greater Los Angeles area. As rugged, moody, no-nonsense deep house music from one of the genre’s unsung veterans, the “LA Housin’ Authority” EP is not only the start of a new chapter in the Worldship Music saga, but a fully realized return to form for the inimitable Teflon Dons sound.

Thomas Gray & Liam Ebbs : ‘‘Recollection of Everything Beautiful’ was written over the space of 18 months between 2019 and 2020. The protracted time frame for the creation of the record corresponded with a period of vast personal change for both Thomas and Liam. Contrary to their debut record, ‘3 Days, 2 Nights’, this work is less bound to place, rather being a reflection on the joy of transformation.’’ 

Part 1 of ‘To An End’ opens the project, fusing ethereal textures and modulating synth tones with a balearic tinged plucked melody and an amalgamation of euphoric strings and atmospherics. ‘Of Two’ follows next and sees the duo deliver intricately evolving off-kilter drums alongside elongated jazz-tinged bass notes and their signature cinematic soundscapes. Following is ‘.nov.’, which contrastingly switches the focus over to minimalistic 4/4 drums, snaking subs, wandering piano lines and resonant fills throughout. 

‘That Was You’ kicks off the flip, once again offering a more left of centre rhythmic approach via glitchy percussion and bumpy kicks while billowing synths and warm Rhodes ebb and flow throughout. ‘Variation II’ embraces a modern classical aesthetic with organic percussion, subtly blooming piano melodies and tension building pads next before Part 2 of ‘To An End’ closes the package, perfectly concluding the experience through evolving guitar melodies, blissful atmospheres, brass swells and a soft rhythmic flow.

Since its emergence in America in the late 70’s, disco has made a lasting impression on people that transcends both cultural and geographic borders. Indonesia’s Munir is a shining example of that very statement. The Bandung-based DJ and producer has been at the forefront of Midnight Runners, a creative collective that has been releasing obscure house and disco music since 2012. More importantly, Munir and the Midnight Runners collective have been preserving the cultural identity of what he calls Nusantara disco – funk, boogie, soul and disco from Indonesian and Malay musicians of the 70’s and 80’s.

Munir’s passion for Nusantara disco can be easily identified in his productions, making for upbeat, contemporary house and disco without compromising his love for the human touch of vintage sounds. Munir’s latest release lands him back on Singapore’s Darker Than Wax record label.

Circuit Line is a 4-track EP of pure vintage influenced bliss. Interlinked, the final track of the EP, takes it a step further with an almost hypnotic-feel that is crafted through subdued vocals, squelchy synth blips, and warping pads. A driving, yet simple bassline pumps throughout the track in what would surely make the dancefloor move. Munir does an excellent job at nestling each element of the track in its respective place, creating a thoroughly enjoyable listening experience.

Electronic producer Intriguant returns with his third album "Spirits" a limited release vinyl under Singapore-based record label, TAV Records.
When it comes to the relationship between electronic music and Singapore, a common theme emerges in the music being produced: a longing for connectivity within the many concrete walls and high rises that residents have grown accustomed to living in.

With "Spirits", Intriguant takes on the role of a distant observer, exploring the landscapes of many different cultures and sounds that have taken shape, both past and present. Driven by hauntingly futuristic breakbeats of the '90s, thunderous 808s, imagined club sounds of dancing folks, and bass-heavy textures reminiscent of Burial, "Spirits" is suited both for late-night club nights and personal listening-rooms. Intriguant's third album most vividly encompasses his experiences as an artist, highlighting his exceptional ability to manipulate electronic music to link abstract ideas to the physical world. The Analog Vault is honored to be working with Intriguant for our third release as TAV Records.

Melbourne’s La Sape, an independent label focusing on jazz-inspired sounds is back with another stunning release. This time it comes from fellow Melbourne-based band, JK Group, fronted by Josh Kelly, saxophonist for the 30/70 Collective who was also recognized as the 2019 PBS Young Elder of Jazz. Only the group’s second offering (and second on the label), the new single, “What’s Real?” is a crossover hit. Combining deep, electronic moods with organic, jazzy instrumentation, it has a modern jazz feel akin to a lot of sounds coming from the booming London scene.“What’s Real?” was recorded without advanced planning when all the group members schedules allowed them to be in one spot at the same time (this happened to be in Melbourne). Tracked fully on analog gear, something we’re seeing less and less of these days, the record owes part of its warmth to the tried and true method. We’re graced with two solos here, one on the sax from Josh Kelly which is then followed up by a Rhodes solo from James Bowers to end the track on a high. The constantly rising, tension building piece beautifully brings together all the elements into a whirling climax that doesn’t lose its grip on you until the final note.This is another lovely offering from La Sape, who also brought you music from the likes of GODTET, Horatio Luna and Godriguez. Any jazz enthusiast is going to want to grab this one for their digital record bag.
