Brothers, sisters, elders, aunties, uncles, cousins in our global community where finally we know what self isolation means we truly are together alone. Lockdown took away the colour of life and has set a new status quo in our society. Trapped in these circumstances the true essence of life emerges more than ever as our spirit longs for humanity and to be together. Club culture is not a local phenomenon, but a global movement. It is a cornerstone of social life and it creates connections between people from all different walks of life. HDSN´s first digital release of 2021 shines a light on the magic and influence between club culture and reality. NBAST037 is a love letter to everyone who is missing life and all it´s treasures, a real treat in these times full of hard struggle and stress that gonna make you smile and dance at the same time like you were used to it.

‘Isolated Love’ hits deep, dubby and hard. Equally thumping as it is deep, it’s a high tempo house track reflecting the simplicity of great grooving house music: a weighty kick, a bassline, soft keys, synths and snapping hats. Paired with a video of HDSN himself roaming the streets of Munich looking for love in an isolated world, it’s a soundtrack for today’s times.

On the B side, HDSN’s ‘Rave Tool’ version cuts to the chase with a stripped back ferocious take – hard as nails. Belonging in a strobe lit basement rave, it’s serious heat, focussing on the synth side of things while letting that thundering kick take us to a hard-hitting place.

Tom Bruce has long kept his nose to the club grindstone. A Sydney stalwart, T.B has worked tirelessly in his efforts to further the harbour city’s dance landscape. From steering his own label ship Start Local Records, to releasing records via clipp.art and Paradiso plus delivering mixes for online radio shows such for Balamii and Area 3000, it’s fair to say Tom’s been putting in work!

Until recently, Tom had called Nottingham UK home. Over two years, he soaked up all there was to learn about how those in the Northern hemisphere navigate the rave. Now, back on home soil, the dude is spilling over with creativity and vigour. Welcome to ‘Cloudy Days Often Have The Best Sunsets’.

This optimistically titled EP certainly lives up to its name, gliding along like a puck on ice. Straight out of the gate is ‘Faux Personality’, a jolly bongo number with acidic licks and 80’s synth play. If you’re looking to break the world record for the longest light jogging distance, throw this on repeat. In addition, Dutchman and label friend HATT.D lathers on more acid with a tidy remix.

Haŵs Party Vol. 2 is a record of soulful, introspective tracks, as though you’ve suddenly become alone on the dance-floor and you turn inwards to explore. Whilst Haŵs Party Vol. 1 took an interstellar road-trip into space, the sophomore release takes a more drawn-out, lengthy cruise into the internalised, cerebral soundscapes of dance music. Wading through the borders between electro, breaks, acid and house, the second instalment from the Cardiff-based label and event promoters travels through uncharted regions of the sprawling atlas of music via another catalogue of exceptional names.
Jad & The’s honey-eyed electro opener ‘Digital Daintree’ is as groove-inducing as it is impassioned – a compact knit of synths, pads and rainforest samples that has no problem in stirring the creative hemisphere of the mind. The glossy interweave is torn apart swiftly, however, by the subsequent track; Dan Only’s ‘Pointless Melody’ is far from purposeless, but impishly bolts between weighty breaks and a greedy acidity that is tempered down by the dainty melody peering through the crevices. The final track on the A-side, ‘Hometurf’, comes from Aleksandir, who projects his lightheaded, wistful sound into warm breakbeats and a soaring repository of arpeggios that’ll have you ceaselessly yearning for some forgotten memory that you assumed had been lost forever.
Harry Griffiths’ ‘Llyn’ ushers away the breaks and replaces them with sun-dappled arrangements of chords and incandescent melodies that flutter like the hypnagogic visions that occur just before you dream. Carlo’s ‘White Lies’ takes the groove deeper than the fissures of the brain. Deliciously raw, balmy and with a frisky bassline, it’s a deep house track that gets back to the pure state of jamming through a wash of live samples from his collaborator, Nikoss. Does the past or future exist, or are we in the perpetual now? The existential rumination is carried gently back to reality with Sandboards rounding up proceedings. A placid coaxing out of the six-track reverie, ‘Japan Pt. 2’ scoops you up in nostalgic bells, pacifying drums and purring basslines until you’re ready to wake up.
It’s an internal excursion for all. Close your eyes, let the motions of your mind plunge deep into your soul, and have your body do the talking.

Melbourne based jazz musician Matthew Hayes began releasing his take on contemporary music via Albrecht La’Brooy’s Analogue Attic imprint in 2017 and has since gone on to release an array of material both as a solo act, a number of collaborations and as part of the Zeitgeist Freedom Exchange project. Here though we see Hayes joining the roster of Black Wattle, a Sydney based imprint headed up by Thomas Gray, one half of the Thomas Gray & Liam Ebbs duo who individually released material on the label, as well as the Analogue Attic imprint collaboratively.

Opening the release is ‘Absolutely Everybody’, fuelled by looming piano chords, plucked bass tones, sporadic brass licks and shuffled drums. ‘Clear’ follows next, laying focus on hazy vocal chants, cinematic piano and sax atmospherics and a choppy bass line throughout.

On the flip-side ‘Head Pressure’ leads, a beatless eight minute composition employing modulating textures, metallic percussion and dynamically unfolding melodies of piano, brass and bass all ebbing and flowing amongst one another. ‘Landcare’ then wraps up the project, retaining a similarly modern classical and jazz leaning aesthetic as wind instruments, wandering bass notes, airy atmospherics and fluttering piano keys flow in unison throughout.
