In the pivotal period before the end of Apartheid, the fluff of bubblegum was starting to boil over into what later became the tougher township-centric sounds of kwaito. Amidst this volatile and transitional climate a mysterious kid named Eddie Magwaza started making moves in the studio, creating music for a vibrant street dance style that was blowing up in SA, called pantsula. At the time, other groups were also starting to create faster and more instrumental dance music which suited this agile style of dancing, but on this album Magwaza managed to channel the cosmic chant of italo and the sweaty energy of early house music in a unique and peerless way that has captured the ears and feet of DJs and dancers around the world many years later.

Magwaza, who wasn't even 20 when he made this album, had the help of seasoned studio whizzes Lucky Matante & Jan Smit with programming, sequencing and engineering, and their studio mastery really takes flight on the dub version of the title cut which has made the album so desirable in the last few years. Sadly Magwaza was shot and killed shortly after the release of the album and it stands as the last testament to his brilliant vision.

Remastered and pressed on a loud 12" Mashisa is once again available to spread the pantsula spirit to dancing bodies everywhere. Artwork by Jessica Greene.

Amsterdam based label, store, and distribution outlet Bordello A Parigi have been on fire lately, and they’re gearing up to release another excellent project with newcomers Mytron & Ofofo. Like the rest of the Bordello catalog, M&O’s debut is a sweet exploration into funk, italo, and disco. The A1, “Aircraft One,” is an absolute heater, and kicks off with an appropriate sample of a plane taking off. As soon as we’re airborne, we’re hit in the face with a heavy rolling bassline that drives the track into trippier territory, a place where searing, brassy synth stabs compliment keyboard flourishes and authoritative vocal shouts that scream for all to “get up!” FYI, if you weren’t up already there’s something wrong with you!

“Aircraft One” is a versatile track that would work well in disco, house, or more afro centric sets. The rest of the EP takes on a more organic, tropical tone, but continues to press the consistent Bordello A Parigi themes of wonky basslines and heavy synth melodies. Futhermore, this is an impressive debut from a duo we know little about. We will certainly be keeping an eye on Mytron & Ofofo’s next projects as we slowly rinse the Aircraft One EP to death. As for Bordello, the formula remains the same, and you’d be amiss to not keep tabs on a label that’s proven to be consistent A&R’s of unique and talented producers.

Constitué de membres des groupes Akalé Wubé (Ethio Jazz), Camarao Orchestra (Brésil) et le pianiste Florian Pellissier, ce nouvel EP contient le titre "Earth overshoot day" ainsi que des remixes par Hugo LX, Vox Low et Patrice Scott.

After putting out Kito Jempere’s stunning Sea Monster album earlier in the year, Hell Yeah now serve up a bunch of remixes from it that have been secret weapons for the last few months. Behind them are Black Spuma, Lipelis and Bell Towers and they all serve up real heaters. First up with possibly their best ever remix are Black Spuma—a collaboration between Phillip Lauer (Tuff City Kids, Arto Mwambe) and Fabrizio Mammarella (Telespazio)—who flip ‘Ampa’ into a bootylicious house cut with fat bass stabs and sci-fi synths. It’s retro in flavour and riddled with melodies that are brightly coloured and emotive, and when the vocal is layered in it helps carry you away on a wave of bliss. For DJs who prefer to keep things raw, a dub version without the vocals is also included and bangs that bit harder. 
Lipelis is a Russian studio wizard and the percussionist from Kito Jempere Band. Famed for his originals on LIES, underrated remixes of MacDonald Flak And The Ack-Ack Packs and for his high impact jams as TMP, he is a real music maniac. Here the Moscow man reworks Lifetime Theme into a cosmic bouncer with taught rubber kick drums and nimble melodies that dance over the beats. His own virtuoso percussion and exotic chords add tropical flavours and the whole thing has corrugated bass that gets right under your skin. 
Lastly, up steps Australian artist Bell Towers from the Public Possession label. His playful version of Lifetime Theme has punchy broken beats and steamy vocal yelps overlaid by big sonorous chords. Uplifting progressions bring a sense of party and big piano chords add another layer of arms in the air fun. Deep but dynamic, it’s a lush track to close out another EP packed with high grade weaponry.
