Arguably the most consistent label in the game, Local Talk had quite the year in 2017. In fact,  DJs and promoters Mad Mats and Tooli were responsible for coming out with some of my favorite releases of the year. From Marcel Lune’s “Astral Palms,” to Crackazat’s “Rainbow Fantasia,” one could argue that no label has been more prolific than Local Talk in recent months. However, this is what we’ve come to expect from the funkmeisters from Sweden.

Not taking any time to catch their breath, Local Talk are kicking off 2018 with a bang with a fresh, disco-centric EP titled “Bound.” This one comes from Andrew Scott, who goes by the name NY*AK. For those that don’t know what “NY*AK” stands for, don’t worry about it. It has nothing to do with New York, Alaska, AK-47s, or when a sustained pedal should be lifted. Andrew simply banged his computer keyboard in frustration one day, and those are the letters his keyboard spit out. Yup, that's it.

Despite that, this should not give you the impression that his music is as haphazard as the manner in which he chose his name. Just take a look at his title track “Bound.” Leading off with an inviting sequence of disco loops, Andrew spends the majority of his time gradually building up the momentum of the song until it releases itself around the 5 minute mark; opening up space for the seductive vocals of Franc Syx to come in. If I had to compare this sensation to a physical experience, I’d say it’s like those times when you arrive late to a jam-packed concert. Eager to get to the front, you and a friend decide to force your way to center stage. But in this particular instance, your friend is NY*AK and he’s taking you up close to the promise-land where you get to listen to Franc Syn’s vocals in all their glory!

When Fouk & Glenn Astro remix a new artist you know what the vibe is: Dirty DIY house with a heavy funk vibe. 
Mangabey is the new kid on the Toy Tonics family and he is a master of this style. He lives in Lyon/ France (and is a good friend of Folamour who remixed his first EP on Toy Tonics some months ago). 
But Mangabey takes the whole new Funk-House sound to another level. While many of his colleagues work with samples, Mangabey studied Jazz piano and collects vintage synths. And so he plays most of the stuff himself and bring in a lot of personality.
His works could remind the vibe of New York Soul House from the 1990ies or the sounds from the West London scene from 20 years ago, but definitely he adds a modern, edgy touch to it.

Mangabey aka Jose Fehner is an interesting personality: Born in the south of France in a family of traveling artists. As a kid he has been living on a boat and in caravans, traveling France and Africa with a wild theater collective directed by his parents who are actors. Later he went to music university and now finally, by age of 22, he lives in Lyon. Lyon is becoming France’ second music town.  The town that has the most vibrant club and producer scene right now. So, yes:  There is a lot to come from there… a lot from Mangabey.

So, I made this one a couple years ago but have always liked it and the computer that I made it on fried last week. A bunch of the plug-ins I used on it don't work on Ableton 10 so what are you gonna do. I just gave it a quick master back when I originally made it and I guess I never technically finished it but it is what it is. Also, Figgy sent me a few Rhodes parts that I used during the break after I wouldn't stop asking him.

Boum Boum Boum! 25 years of KOMPAKT. When a record label still thrives after a quarter of a century thanks to a focus of what was expected to be a short lived music phenomenon called TECHNO, then it stands to prove two things; that it techno has taken its place amongst serious, multilayered musical genres like rock’n’roll, pop and folk music. And that KOMPAKT has never been only for techno, but KOMPAKT stands as a broad-minded, genre-defying entity that has set out to cross-pollinate all kinds of musical inventions within the realm of electronic music. Through its course, KOMPAKT has sent “Around The World”, all kinds of sub-genres, concept series and crossover adventures based on the non- negotiable 4/4 beat. And back again.

Without a doubt, the 100% kickdrum-free POP AMBIENT series is the most endearing and enduring concept that I have had the pleasure to curate. From the start, I felt there was a strong need to add a certain pop- elegance - ensouled by discourse as much as hedonism - to a sound that was recognized as “Chill Out” music that could be heard in seedy techno club back rooms and forgotten festival areas. Over the years, I like to imagine that POP AMBIENT has crystallized into a highly recognizable trademark sound and a multi-facetted musical universe of its own.

So once again, I had the pleasure to put together this year’s edition by plowing through an ocean of sonic jewelry that had been submitted from all over the world by new and old friends. The task was clear: for this special edition, I must create a homogenous listening experience that would both appeal to our trusting followers, to continue our tradition while integrating new micro facets , variations and influences from neighboring musical universes as possible. Obligatory while being innovative. Conspirative while being cosmopolitan. Albeit the headline “Ambient” might sound a little too humble for a compilation that encompasses aspects of neo classic, atonal music and the most beautiful aural kitsch imaginable, it still helps as a necessary means of orientation in the best possible sense. Same goes for another dear tradition: Veronika Unland’s abstract-floral cover design that keeps on pleasing our sore eyes year after year.

Although each and every POP AMBIENT edition doesn’t shy away from diving into the relevant question of “What is contemporary discourse music” – in the end it all boils down to that elevated moment where all theory dissolves into ambient air, into a higher state of cosmic bliss. POP AMBIENT is sacral music for non-believers.

Born in Crete, warped to London for 6 years and gave it up in 2006 for Athens. Can’t live without moustaches, vintage clothes, high heels and italo Disco!
Her crowd loyally follows her and comprises of fanatic extras from episodes of Dynasty, Joan Collins hairdressers, enchanted dancers permanently vogueing.
Boring bio: Picked up the phone one day called a local radio station and demanded to go on air, all at the tender age of 14. She was soon given her very own grrrrl rock show for two years along with her best friend. After a long break from broadcasting she next picked up her records while studying in London in 2000, at the student bar of her halls of residence. This gave her the chance to test different styles and genres and to learn how to beat match the hard way on some busted up turntables and cd decks.
Three years later the parties started! With a brief stint as resident dj at the underground DISCOnection after parties in London’s East End, other apearrances include, a guest appearance at Moon alongside Wandson Maxx and guerilla djing at the Redlight after party.
It’s now October 2006 in Athens and it seemed that by chance her path crosses that of the Amateur boyz. And so began a residency with the boyz at a russian disco in Athens from December 2006 till June 2007 and with an urban mobile party for the winter of 2007-08. Another residency emerged right after the last party of the first season in one of Athens largest mainstream clubs Motel with their D.I.R.T.Y. parties and since then various other locations, parties, events including Yes it Does!Sure it Does!, Earthdance festival Athens, kormoranos, Wrapped in Plastic and many more.
Mid 2010 she is joined by d:tek and Tareq, in forming a new dj team, Sally Spektra and accompanying “fashion” blog on Sallyspektra.com
After more than 14 years a return to radio production has finally come up with the creation of new Greek web radio station WaveRadio.gr and her show “Dancing Madly Backwards” which fuses italo disco, 80s pop, new wave and more “modern” sounds alongside guest dj sets.

Her newest project is called <a href="http://soundcloud.com/fascination_music">fascination!</a> with fellow dj/producer ELIOT!
