Honey Badger Records are already off to a scorching start to 2021. Back on March 5th, label-head JNS dropped the remix-package to his 2020 debut album, Miasma Remix, which we covered on the site. One of the remixes on that project was courtesy of electronic duo Two Tone Shape, which saw the Seoul-native duo lending their expansive, live-set-programming chops to the track, “Tipping Point”. The duo released their own breakout project on Honey Badger last November, Fantastic Machines, and now, the label is giving it the same treatment as JNS’s debut, with a remix album dropping April 7th.

 Tapped for closing track “Nouveau Monde”––a short, yet expertly paced ambient closer––Seoul-based DJ, Mignon, drops us right in media res with his remix. Rather than abiding by the slow-burn formula of the original, Mignon immediately hits us with the sonic wall that the original methodically develops. However, he still manages to retain the sense of pacing and grandeur that the original so elegantly displayed, while introducing a higher BPM and several more breaks. The peak of this track soars to heights and a sense of awe only hinted at in the original, but all the while manages to never feel over-the-top or as if it’s fully deconstructing the original edifice upon which it is built. 

With this release, Honey Badger are quickly establishing themselves as one of the most prolific and versatile indie-House labels not only in South Korea, but all across the globe. The range of talent on display here is nothing short of amazing.

In a wild flurry of primal rage and intoxication, she’d approached the venue hours earlier, flung her coat and bag in a nondescript location and launched herself at the dance floor. As the hours ticked on and her senses reemerge, the coin drops and her face implodes with concern. “…I’ll be back”. Edging towards the door whilst unwanted and unwarranted male attention attempts to set its claws in, she wraps up the conversation for the sixth time and manages to leave the room. As she retraces steps and does her best impression of her inebriated self, she systemically checks each pitch black corner and crevice for her mostly dark and featureless possessions. As she clambers over outstretched legs and through condensed groups of people lacking even the most basic levels of social awareness, worry spreads across her face. “What on earth are you doing?” a voice says whilst prodding her shoulder. She turns around to find her mate, carrying her bag, coat, half a cloakroom ticket stub and a bemused expression on her face. 

We’re delighted to premiere a new track by seasoned producer Herb LF, and the first release on fresh-faced label International Extraterrestrial. With over two decades of experience, the German producer has shown versatility of style, dabbling in everything from UK Garage to Minimal Techno. Littered with raunchy breaks, bubbling kicks and uplifting stabs, ‘Helicopter money’ is a track you don’t want to miss.

Detroit’s Jason Hogans steps up for Alelah Records as the first producer from across the pond to offer their own unique set of house groove for the label. And what a groove we’re given; five tracks peruse through low-slung, synth-heavy beats pushed by infectious drum breaks.

‘Why Keep Going’ is all about innocent synths in the mids met by some sleaziness in the low end. The basslines continue and on ‘Big Room Slaps’, it takes centre stage, making things real murky. ‘Dance While You Sleep’ combines a hard-hitting beat with a soft series of loose keys and a warm synth.

‘Do Away With Borders’ is Hogan venturing into stranger territory: bass deep from the depths and filtered, floating keys come up to the surface while a drowned out sample bops its way into view as the track rolls. ‘Hazy Funk Slap’, finally, breaks out into a full on frenzy of jazz drums - naughty.

Interdimentrix is a five track EP from Brooklyn-based Old Terra. The combination of chaotic breaks, ghostly pads, steady kicks, and hooky baselines will have you scratching your head, as well nodding it.

Eerie atmospheres of In Parallel, Dim Ages and Subdimension are contrasted by the energy brought by Griff Spex on Get You Open, a track that would sound equally at home in the club or coming out of a car stereo at 2 AM somewhere in Crown Heights. The release wraps with the suspenseful and purifying vibes of Iverson Loop.

Brooklyn-based producer M.Vaughan has spent the better part of a decade crafting emotional electronic music.

His productions on labels like Freerange, Monologues, and his own Super Tuff merge warped synthesizers, simple melodies, and raw percussion into a fresh take on dance music, catching the attention of tastemakers like Laurent Garnier, Jimpster and Axel Boman.

His debut album, True Life, which lands on Super Tuff on February 5th , explores every genre from ambient to house and breaks with impressive cohesion. Taking its name from a phrase Vaughan and his older brother coined in their grade school years, meaning “I swear,” True Life is a ten-track diary told through synthesizers, samples, and drum machines.

The album naturally separates itself into two parts—a warm, organic opening and a cold, electronic close. “Softly” perfectly encapsulates the coziness of the album’s first half. Composed of delicate piano, dusty drum breaks, and layers of live guitar, the tune builds from a simple beat into a triumphantly melancholic anthem, reminiscent of Amygdala-era DJ Koze.

On the opposite end, “Timshel” is the hard-nosed standout of the back half. Inspired by a night at Berlin’s Griessmühle, the track’s foundation rests on an electro drum pattern, providing a mechanical backdrop as a synth stab rises ominously into the foreground.

With no 4/4 kick in sight, an overdriven breakbeat arrives two minutes in, launching the tune into the stratosphere leaving the listener in a dizzying headspin with an aftertaste similar to Shed or Photek.

"Origins" is a collection of 6 pillars in exploratory electronic music from 6 different uprising producers and sound artists. A varied, yet cohesive collection of bright, meditative, and pulsating atmospheres.

Couldn't think of a better finale than this epic journey of a track from LA's Pkacarl. "Holding Together" starts us off with an end-of-the-world piano scenario before being joined by what can only be described as an electric guitar oozing through the portals of an entire galaxy of synths and pedals. What really makes this song is the mind-crushing bass-line with an invincible spirit that may keep you dancing infinitely.
