The Alishan Forest Railway is a 86 km network of narrow-gauge railways running through the forests of Alishan Mountain in Chiayi County, Taiwan. During the Spring months, the iconic red train passes through an endless array of cherry blossoms and small, untouched villages. This peaceful scene is set in contrast to the stories told by locals, of wandering spirits seen deep in the forest. The spirits are believed to be the lost souls of the 32 passengers, who perished in the tragic derailment of the train in 1981.

Burn a candle in remembrance when you play this record at the club.

You’ve probably heard by now that Australia is in the midst of an unprecedented climate disaster. Catastrophic bushfires are raging across much of Australia and have not only taken a huge human and economic toll but have also delivered heavy blows to native flora and fauna. 

BONN are passionate about contributing to a brighter future and are committed to taking action, especially when politicians won’t. In response to the tragic events that are taking place in theirs and possibly your homeland, they asked some talented friends to contribute to a compilation to support those affected by the devastating bushfires across Australia. 

Proceeds will be donated to a campaign set up by a Yorta Yorta man and community rights advocate, Neil Morris (Drmngnow). The money raised will offer culturally sensitive, specific and direct support to communities with critical costs to cover—such as temporary relocation, basic amenities, property repairs and ongoing support where necessary.

A note from BONN also to say "we acknowledge that these tragedies have occurred on Sacred Indigenous lands where Sovereignty has not been ceded. The ongoing connection of First Nations people’s to country and culture is critical to life on this land. We acknowledge our ancestors and elders past present and future."

Andy Ash has been quietly sneaking out seriously good analogue-driven electronic music on some of the best underground labels for over a decade. The Liverpool-based producer, DJ and visual artist has graced the likes of Chicago’s Stilove4music, NYC’s On The Prowl, Sydney’s People Must Jam and has remixed Fantastic Man for Detroit label Kolour LTD amongst many others. The bottom line is that he’s definitely one of the UK’s unsung heroes when it comes to deep, raw, Chicago and Detroit-influenced house music and Delusions of Grandeur is proud to welcome him with an amazing three tracker entitled the Bottleneck EP.

The title track opens with snappy hats, flappy congas and sloppy baseline all sitting perfectly in the mix and with a looseness that is much harder to achieve that it may seem. A simple synth melody doubles up the bassline while an extra square wave lead adds that little extra hook without distracting us from the bouncing groove. With Bottleneck, less is definitely more.

Flipping over we have Hump, an altogether darker affair with a twisting acid line joining distorted 808 drums and tripped-out snippets of spoken word coming in and out of focus. The low-slung bumpy groove and spacey synth parts make this a compelling warehouse track which will draw everyone into it’s seductive confines.

Closing the release we have Actual Price, a shuffling, deep groover with rumbling low end and machine-like analogue synth part skipping around the crunchy beats. A cerebral yet punchy and dynamic closer to an excellent release!

We're no strangers to Philip Budny here at Bolting Bits, keeping a close watch - since his first forays into the world of blissed out house music on Church's Volumes compilation, to his recent outing on Let’s Play House - it’s been a joy watching his music develop and bloom. It’s an even greater pleasure to premiere Belfast, the A2 off of his debut album “Shades of Blue”. Coming out on Philip’s own ‘Aronia Records’ imprint, the 7-tracker is Philip’s most expansive and cohesive work to date. Belfast, built on a bed of chilled out rolling drums and embellished with all sorts of hazy ambient synthetics, is a beautiful tune perfect for any comedown, or increasingly frequent bout of the quarantine blues. Closed-eyed, foot tapping and gentle hip swaying house music at its best, pretty much what we’ve come to expect from Philip Budny.However, the more ambient leaning pieces of the album see Budny delivering some of his most exciting work yet. A personal highlight is the title track, ‘Shades of Blue’, featuring beautifully emotive harmony - played through gliding synths reminiscent of his breakout tune ‘Eclipses’ -and super groovy sparse percussion, which are some of the more left-field and exciting rhythmic arrangements he’s offered up so far in his discography. Likewise, Moritzplatz, 2013, with drifting new-age piano riffs, rainsticks, detuned deteriorating strings, ambient field recordings little a tiny touch of percussion, is a beautifully crafted moment on the album. Such cuts see Budny tread newer ground both melodically and rhythmically, and the payoff is truly rewarding.All in all a serene, soothing journey from start to end, a perfect companion for quarantine daydreaming, ’Shades of Blue’ is a must-listen.

US midwestern gem Ilana Bryne is back on Naive and, once again, she's got you covered for grade "A" contemplative-but-propulsive groovers, perfectly timed for these trying days. Like her debut EP "Low Earth Orbit" from last year, "Strange Adventure" layers sharp rhythms and playful touches with ethereal atmospheres and open spatiality. But stagnating she is not; her pristine production turned even brighter on this one, reaching a level of sonic and compositional finesse that has to be heard to be believed. 

Profound musical influences come through in this premiere's 'Used To Love T H E M', through echoes of Chicagoans like Glenn Underground, Gemini, and Boo Williams, tempered to perfection with the floaty atmospherics and chopped breaks of LTJ Bukem and other masters of liquid DNB. Delicate synth sequences illustrate loving dialogues between bass bin-busting subs and suspended Rhodes chords or airy pads, traveling through dynamic arrangements, with the odd moment of suspense done fresh.

Church welcomes Swedish native DJ Clea for her debut EP with the imprint, entitled ‘Historia’. The first single ‘I Want To Stay’ drops on August 28th, followed by the full EP - out everywhere on September 11th.

Clea Herlöfsson has become quite the staple amongst Stockholm’s prolific DJ scene. She’s currently a resident at one of Stockholm’s foremost underground venues Under Bron and the self-pronounced Dancing Queen has been making her way through some of the world’s top venues and festivals over recent years including Else (Berlin), Social Room (Hong Kong) and Kaiku (Helsinki). After quitting her day job to focus on production, she’s honed a sound custom made for the peak-time having released on labels like Unknown To The Unknown and Study Records - transmitting nostalgic feelings of mid-rave contentment and dancefloor togetherness.

DJ Clea’s opening track ‘Gothic Girl’ is a self-portrait of her signature style, building trance-like synth lines and high-energy kick drums before dropping harder breaks as the track revs up. Lead single ‘I Want To Stay’ is up next, introduced by ethereal swirls and crisp percussion before 90s-style vocals and dreamy pads come together for a house track reminiscent of vintage RnB. Next up is ‘Leon Stone’ - a deeper track undercut by a low-slung melody and laidback retro synth sounds. 

DJ Clea’s ‘Historia’ EP is out everywhere on September 11th.
