For some dance music fans, Alex Garcia may be their new favourite DJ thanks to his excellent sets at Nitsa, Switch Pocket Club, Esfera Fest and Buena Onda Social Club among many more, including some hazy afterparties. In his own, close-knit world of Discogs fanatics and vinyl purists, he's an admired and established digger and DJ of the Barcelona scene. Over the past 10 years he DJ’d tirelessly and continued to dig forgotten gems that will surprise the most exquisite listeners.

We met Alex through common friends and it was a pure connection from day one. His joyful character, and jokes make him such an special friend, who we admire, so it's a true pleasure presenting Alex as our first guest in our monthly podcast series.

Basic Moves 17 reignites the Brussels–New York connection with an EP from Reade Truth (Path, Planet E, Sonic Groove) under his Fiction Life guise, comprising six original Techno cuts from the now Berlin-based producer and DJ.

‘’One of New York's early pioneers of techno and DJ culture, Reade Truth has been an integral part of the cities' techno history. His first of over two dozen releases came out in 1994 on the Brooklyn underground acid label, Direct Drive. Since then, his releases have made many a mark on labels like Path, Sonic Groove, Planet E and more.’’

Across the ‘Basic Moves 17’ release, Reade delivers a selection of psychedelia infused techno cuts featuring vocals from the man himself on the downbeat opener "Social Overload" which lays down skippy, frenetic drums with eerie synth lines and gritty bass stabs before ‘Soul To Soul’ as the name would suggest showcases the soul of the Techno sound with intricate melodies, acid bass grooves and dynamic percussion. Classic Track "Power of Ideas" follows next, reworked from his 1998 1st Qtr EP, fusing dubbed-out string sequences, squelchy acid licks over a crisp house groove.

The c-side opens with ‘Cerebrum Crush’, fuelled by tumbling bass flutters, murky stabs and heavily swung drums before ‘The Present Moment’ merges unfurling synth melodies with vacillating bass notes and saturated drums. "From the Ashes" rounds out the release with hypnotic female vocals from guest Natasha Romanova, trippy off-beat stabs, expansive synth echoes and organic percussion throughout.

Skins continues forging his own path with a new label celebrating the uplifting and futuristic sounds of jungle, with a four-tracker featuring tracks with early support from Katiusha, Tañ and Frazer Ray.

Whilst some will know Skins from his days DJing regularly around Oxford, his run of self-released white label techno EPs or last year’s underground hit 24 Hour Dub, more recently he has turned his attention back to the music which made him fall in love with it all in the first place:

“I vividly remember the effect that the futuristic sounds of 90s jungle and drum ‘n’ bass had on me as a kid, hearing snippets of tracks in video games and later stumbling across artists like Alaska, Future Engineers, Seba, Peshay and LTJ Bukem. After years engrossing myself in the cavernous spaces of dub techno, this record feels like a return to my roots, bringing my style into a new arena which still feels like home. Rafiki (Krunk, Krunk Kulture) is a true pioneer of electronic music in India and a major player in bringing acclaimed events to India. His debut solo EP, The Source is released on Welt Discos on 9th March, with the single, A London Sound, released to announce the EP on 9th February.

The Source EP showcases Rafiki’s musical philosophy perfectly. On this EP, he throws three decades of UK rave culture genres into the melting pot (hardcore, house, breaks, garage and bass), adds his own Indian heritage, and gives it a healthy stir. The results are conclusive: Original yet classic, familiar yet fresh. Each of the four tracks on The Source EP manage to find this sweet spot. 

Next on the EP comes the title track The Source. Dark, haunting melodies wrestle to harness the uncompromisingly wicked drum track. The result is something brooding yet blistering like an end of level baddy approaching you across the dancefloor. Starting with some really funky breaks, Where Is The Honey? moves up through the gears into a driving 4/4. A huge acid bassline is tempered by bittersweet synths.  Fizzing up and down several octaves, Varied Sciences closes the EP. This track takes machine funk to the next level. An acid twitching melody set down over ringing, metallic drums, this is a track that appeals to the brain and the feet.

Started by Joe Delon in Lisbon in 2019, Welt Discos is a label driven by a love of musicality. Reflecting Joe’s own taste as a DJ, the label pushes body-moving grooves from across the dance music spectrum. One ear is always turned to the pop, snap and funk of early synthesised club sounds.
