Cong Burn is a record label perhaps underestimated, it has been an outlet for intricate experimentation and has been responsible for the release of music by the likes of Lanark Artefax, BFTT, Howes, Chekov and more. In 2017-2018 Japanese musician Kuniyuki Takahashi joined forces with his Swedish friend Marcus Henriksson (half of Son Kite / Minilogue) for a few jam sessions that were recorded in Tokyo in late 2017 and later digitally released by the artists themselves.
The sessions were as they called it “an improvised live recordings..” And out of them came the d-N-A Sessions. Being friends of both musicians, the mysterious J.A.K.A.M. (with 2 releases already on MT) decided to edit and rework 2 of the jam-session tracks… Using his unique sonic aesthetics, playing a lot of percussion rhythms and overlaying them on existing acid parts and drum machines, the result is breath-taking…Two tribal house Big Room cuts, for peak time club or festival set... Nothing like you’ve ever heard before...

After a long hiatus our unsigned series is back. Producers who have appeared on the series so far have been approached by labels and subsequently had material released by them after we helped shed some light on the new talents. We hope we’re able to do the same with the next one in the bunch, coming from Melbourne's @darcykhalid. 

Get to know a little about him below:

Hey, I’m Darcy Khalid.

I’ve been producing music for about five years and DJing and playing piano for a little longer. Since I moved to Melbourne in 2016, I’ve been producing music with at least the vague intention to release it publicly. I wanted to wait until I felt I had a sound that was my own, and I guess that time has come.

My Unsigned track is from my debut EP. The record features three quite different tracks, including elements of ambience, techno, drum & bass – even hints of jazz on the A1. Hakone Schoolyard is the A2, and if someone called it a broken beat ambient techno jam, I wouldn’t call them crazy.

It evolved three times over about 18 months. I made a version, got bored of it, left it alone, then repeated that process several months later. What you hear now is take three. I can be a bit ambitious with my compositions, so they’re often long and multi-sectioned. My favourite songs will change a lot, weaving between atmospheres, energy levels and tempos, often seamlessly, but occasionally with bold abruption. I tried to do both here. I hope it worked.

Thomas Gray & Liam Ebbs : ‘‘Recollection of Everything Beautiful’ was written over the space of 18 months between 2019 and 2020. The protracted time frame for the creation of the record corresponded with a period of vast personal change for both Thomas and Liam. Contrary to their debut record, ‘3 Days, 2 Nights’, this work is less bound to place, rather being a reflection on the joy of transformation.’’ 

Part 1 of ‘To An End’ opens the project, fusing ethereal textures and modulating synth tones with a balearic tinged plucked melody and an amalgamation of euphoric strings and atmospherics. ‘Of Two’ follows next and sees the duo deliver intricately evolving off-kilter drums alongside elongated jazz-tinged bass notes and their signature cinematic soundscapes. Following is ‘.nov.’, which contrastingly switches the focus over to minimalistic 4/4 drums, snaking subs, wandering piano lines and resonant fills throughout. 

‘That Was You’ kicks off the flip, once again offering a more left of centre rhythmic approach via glitchy percussion and bumpy kicks while billowing synths and warm Rhodes ebb and flow throughout. ‘Variation II’ embraces a modern classical aesthetic with organic percussion, subtly blooming piano melodies and tension building pads next before Part 2 of ‘To An End’ closes the package, perfectly concluding the experience through evolving guitar melodies, blissful atmospheres, brass swells and a soft rhythmic flow.

Unknown Mobile should change his name to Banger Mobile because I feel like every time one Levi’s tune hits my ears I’m literally fuckin’ reelin’ for the dancefloor. “Tired”, his contribution to a killer various artists compilation on These Things Take Time hits on all the right levels and might be my favorite from his growing discography. Reviews aren’t supposed to be sad, but I’m pretty fucking sad that I can’t get absolutely destroyed by this tune on one of my local rave systems. I know, times are tough right now, but we will persevere and slaps like this will get the dancefloor time they deserve. OR WILL THEY!? I don’t fuckin’ know, okay. All I know is that I’d trade 30 Molson Canadian’s for a chance to take this tune out for a rip at Panorama Bar.

Normally, I’d have the words to describe the tune in finer detail. In the past I’ve given breakdowns of specific instrumentation choices and I’d point out the track’s perceived genre influences. BUT LIKE, THAT IS NOT RELEVANT RIGHT NOW BECAUSE I’M TOO BUSY SMASHING THE REPEAT BUTTON WITH MY WHOLE FUCKING FACE. PLEASE GOD SOMEONE MAKE ME A 45-MIN VERSION OF THIS TUNE. It’s really just everything I love about the current flavor of tech house and deep house and labels like Casa Voyager, Coymix, Dance All Day, etc. Floaty yet PUMPY, driving, spacey, punchy, techy, fuck man. Proper grammar goes right out the window when a track hits like “Tired” does.

Anyways, I hope ya’ll enjoy the one review I’ll write this year, and I hope it came across that I really really really love this tune. And for the love of all that is holy please check out the full project. Regularfantasy has assembled a serious cast of characters for this one and there are plenty of other amazing tunes to be heard.

A wigged out cut for the club and beyond, the psychedelic, post-punk tinged sounds of 'Black Dragon Loop' sees the duo deep dive further into their infinite sonic palette with a darker and more rugged multi-instrumental approach. Made out of the sample banks of a good friend, the track indicates a key factor in FYI Chris' music - their sense of community, the one which they are so wholly ingrained, and the influence of friends and family along the way. Sonically a reflection of the times but also a clear indication of a penchant for industrial and macabre sounds, this new single represents a sound fans will already know, largely due to West Friends label they co-run with friends from the Rye Wax basement - the imprint has delivered some of London's most outlandish dance-music in recent years, exemplifying their love for tongue-in-cheek gallows humour and an appetite for wonky club weirdness.

Colombian artist ADI delivers her debut album via Belgium’s Basic Moves this November, comprised of eight original compositions.

Hailing from Bogotá, Colombia, ADI has steadily developed a reputation as a driving force for raw, stripped-back electronic sounds on her home turf and across the globe. In 2018 ADI launched Automagically alongside partner Theories, a platform for music and art that has welcomed and collaborated with artists like Unai Trotti, Francesco Del Garda, Audio Werner and many more. Here we see ADI delivering her debut album via Belgium’s Basic Moves, a project that’s been two years in the making and was born out of a friendship between label boss Michiel Claus aka Walrus, the pair initially met while he was on tour in Colombia and again when ADI toured Europe, the pair have been developing this album ever since.

Across the eight track collection, which will come as a 2x12’’ and 7’’ vinyl release, ADI delivers the culmination of all of her musical experiences over the years.

Opener ‘Output’ sets the tone with warbling synth line, bumpy off-kilter drums and hazy atmospherics. ‘Break It Down For You’ follows next fusing skippy jazz leaning drums with spoken word vocals and a gritty bass hook. May 1 Loop 111 follows next, which ADI explains is like ‘a word game and reflects the feeling of being looped within ones self (habits, mindsets, thoughts). ‘Indefinite Recession’ follows, laying down an IDM tinged five and half minute, piecing together dynamic drums, winding resonant synths and choppy bass stabs.

‘Mad Love’ follows next, again exploring ADI’s more jazz-tinged minimal aesthetic via skippy broken drums, warbling Rhodes and spoken word voices. ‘War Outside’ follows, retaining a similary stripped-back aesthetic with hazy ethereal pads, low-slung percussin and intricately evolving melodies. Up first on to the 7’’ part of the release is ‘Over’ a nod to instrumental hip hop with dusty breaks, chopped samples and mind altering melodies before ‘Beginning’ wraps things up courtesy of warped subs, crunchy drums and an amalgamation of tripped-out jazz samples.
