We follow up our last premiere with a remix from the mighty WheelUP!  Shout out to Re:Fill & Cognitiva Records!

of the full release of ‘Cycles’ by the Jazzfunk duo Re:Fill, Cognitiva shine a light on the incredible remixes that feature on the LP, with the reworks coming from some fine talents indeed.

The sound that Re:Fill are able to conjure up is one of rhythmic complexity, simmering melodic sequences, and an overall feeling of quietly building euphoria that only comes from Jazz laden dance grooves. To assist with the overall vibe of their debut LP, Sofatalk, WheelUP and Ben Hauke were recruited to put their spins on the cuts ‘Impulse’ and ‘Stillness’, and the goods they serve up are truly spectacular. ‘Impulse’ sees both Sofatalk and WheelUP working their magic, with the Sofatalk remix adding in a cosmic tinge to compliment the already wide array of chordal tones, with emphasis placed on the movement between density and spatial vacuums which makes the movement through the phases extra enjoyable. WheelUP takes things down to a saunter, but what a saunter it is, with the feeling captured here one of rhythmic excellence, with the keys enveloping the listener in what could only be described as a blissful bath of melody.

To wrap things up, Ben Hauke really shifts perspectives on ‘Stillness’, with the hazy piano fuelled experience found in the original turbo drived upon a two step leaning beat. The delicate piano that makes the original so intoxicating remains as a rhythmic motif, with plenty of intriguing elements thrown into the mix that keep the mind yearning for more, whilst the beat gets the feet stepping until the early hours.

Three remixes, three differing interpretations, one big wetting of the appetite. This excellent trio only hints at the wider picture, so get locked in until the big day arrives!

A quick note about the premiere video we posted on our Instagram - the lovingly crafted video collage combined with Henry's rhythmic soundscapes was put together by Jeen Bassa - a man better known for his own beats and lyrics with Mama Ode and Omas Sextet alongside solo releases on the 22a label.

The hub of London's early-2000s broken beat—or simply "bruk"—scene, CoOp was started in 2000 and ran until 2007. Founded by Dego, Demus, Phil Asher and IG Culture, the residents shifted and evolved, with members of Bugz In The Attic—the nine-strong production group, whose remixes helped to define the bruk sound—trading places with the founding four. Running every other Sunday night, it was a testing ground for new, forward-thinking music whose counterpart, on the other two Sundays of the month, was the much-storied dubstep incubator FWD>>. The legendary London party returned in March of 2017 after a ten-year absence, following two Boiler Room broadcasts that inspired the idea to bring back the club night proper.

In addition to the revival of the club night, CoOp launched a new label, CoOp Presents, focusing on music from new producers who are carrying on the broken beat tradition. So far they’ve released two instalments of the “Selectors Assemble” series, and today we have a taste of the third.

When IG Culture and Alex Phountzi of Bugz In The Attic reconnected in 2013, they started to meet up every week or so to work on music. Their new moniker, NameBrandSound, was a catalyst for both of them to start making tunes again. Their remix of Quango’s “Rock It Tonight” is an absolute dancefloor bomb. A heavy broken groove sets the scene before Eska’s soaring vocals take center stage. Her voice is complemented by gorgeous pads and synth melodies that float through various progressions over a steady bassline. Rewind selecta cause the people need more vibes like this!!

If you’re new to the broken beat or bruk sound, and you like what you hear, there are plenty more tunes on this EP that are just as bangin’. Trussss me fam, I’ve been playing these in Brooklyn and they all go off, even the chill ones. Keep an eye out for the drop and take some time to dig back through the history of the party. You won’t be disappointed, unless you dislike finding good music.

CoOp Presents an all-new double-album compilation entitled ‘Plug One’. It features a plethora of
global talent from in & around the world of broken beat and beyond - some already well-established in
the field, some very much on the come-up and some brand new artists, this compilation is an
acknowledgment of a continually evolving sound from the label formed by IG Culture & Alex Phountzi
a few years ago. ‘Plug One’ affirms this electric movement, with a deeply fluid current running
throughout, with tracks ranging from the cosmic psych jazz of LCSM, to the classic UKG tweaks of
Groove Chronicles, to a veritable who’s who of 2020 bruk talent.
Following on from the recent single ‘400 Years’ by Reginald Omas Mamode IV, which had love from
Gilles Peterson (BBC 6 Music), XLR8R, Earmilk and on Spotify’s Butter & State Of Jazz playlists
respectively, we give you another taste of what’s to come.
Single two comes courtesy of NameBrandSound aka CoOp Presents label founders, IG Culture and
Alex Phountzi, inviting in the soulful vocals of Aleisha Lee to join them on the firing ‘Home Demo’.
NameBrandSound produce more of their classic heavyweight bruk, whilst Aleisha’s vocals ensure that
this one is nicely balanced between the rough and the smooth.
The single also includes a remix from upcoming talent Risa T who flips the track in a sweet UKG style &
pattern, and a further collaboration with her & 50% of NameBrandSound, Alex Phountzi on the track
‘Rotations’ (both tracks appearing on this digital single only), a slightly deeper affair with an ethereal
piano hook, and subtle guitar licks & synth stabs - Deep Bruk business! Risa T is a Tokyo-born,
London-based producer, who nurtured her music roots through years of classical training from a young
age. In recent times, she has released tracks & remixes for Da Lata, Summer Dance Forever and now
CoOp Presents.
‘Home Demo’ is released on October 16th digitally whilst the album compilation ‘Plug One’ is out on
double vinyl album & digital on November 13th.

MIMS would like to wish the ever-on-it Wot Not label a happy 10th birthday. And to celebrate, we are premiering "Without You", a sublime slice of broken soul by Beringei, featuring William Florelle.

Beringei made his mark on debut 'The People, The Place'. The producer returns this April 9th with the deeper ’Without You’ EP.  Drawing on soulful melodies, low-slung house and broken beat grooves, and R&B-flavoured bass lines to create a simultaneously forward yet nostalgic sound.

Revolving around the theme of adapting to change, the EP deals with turning negatives into positives, after the artist struggled through injury and mental-health related issues in 2019, putting him in a good place to help others deal with the troubles of 2020.

At the center of the EP, and one of it's higher tempo pieces, likes the woozy, body moving, broken beat sounds of "Without You", aided by frequent collaborator and multi-talented labelmate, William Florelle.
