Shanti Celeste is a vibe. She’s got that magic lightness of touch even when things are getting Jacques Cousteau deep or panel beating heavy. This makes her the perfect candidate for the Sound of Love International 3, channelling the spirit of both those after-hours sessions and the more frivolous daytime boat parties. This is serious music for serious music heads but, after all, everyone is still on holiday. It’s linear and cohesive but plays with the emotions - carnivalesque fun, psychedelic flow-states, heads-down rhythm trax, playful skipping garage, and more abstract moments. Deep joy to deep space and back, often in the space of 3 or 4 well-selected records. 

There’s a deep musical and personal connection to the festival - as she says of her first time playing at the Beach Bar, “there’s a heavy Bristol crew there and it all feels easy and nice. It was just good vibes all round”. And she does make it sound easy too, which belies a DJ with some very serious skills and an ear for a killer tune that others might well overlook. And it’s this that makes the 3rd instalment of the Sound of Love International such a joy - a welcome panacea to all of us suffering from the Croatian blues this year. 

To which end, we get a cheeky exclusive collaboration between Shanti and her sister-in-arms Saoirse in the shape of ‘Solid Mass’. Persian’s uniquely British paean to the post-rave Sunrise ‘Morning Sun’, cavernous dub runnings outta the Bokeh camp from Seekers International. These are the lift- off tunes, setting the mind-state for the journey ahead. 

Things tighten up with cult underground hero Lucas Rodenbush under his E.B.E alias giving us the taught, grooving, dubby tech-house and Gideon Jackson’s ‘Taj Mahal’, crisp, spatial, mystical and criminally slept-on. We go deeper into the night with Perpetual’s Awakenings’, one of those records that is so much more than the sum of its parts. And who knew that Mark Seven was such a dab hand with the dank machine funk? Check 1998’s ‘Crank’ for the skinny. By the time Paco Pack’s rubberised ghetto house reimagining bounces into play it’s GAME OVER. 

The final side leaves us with the soft landing - Cari Lekebusch ‘Output 2’ is both pacey and drifting and Pauline Anna Strom’s ‘In-Flight Suspension’ does what it says, whips away the drums and leaves us floating in space. Will we ever touch down? 

To overuse a phrase, this compilation arrives in strange times but is a glorious reminder of what brought us all together and will again. The music and dancing under the stars. See you in 2021.

The midnight hour crept unto thee with hasty caution, revealing 'A Little Night Music: Aural Apparitions from the Geographic North', our third putrid prowl into Halloween-inspired sounds to torment and tantalize throughout the season. For this bout of distinguished dementia, we culled 31 brand new tracks of haunted hysteria conjured by some of the most alluring ambientists and outer auteurs from around the world. 

Spanning over two hours across two cassettes, 'A Little Night Music…’ unfurls itself in a literary horror structure, appearing and disappearing through a stirring Prologue and Epilogue by London-based cellist Oliver Coates, with each side of the cassettes introducing its Chapter with a chilling dirge courtesy of the inscrutable Geographic North House Band.  

What fills the ensuing pages is a mirthful tale concocted by an assembly exploring a realm all at once mournful and fatalist at its core. Entries from Clarice Jensen, Malibu, and the collaboration of Like a Villain and Christina Vantzou bring about endless glacial landscapes accented by pitch-grey skies. Conversely, transmissions from Michael Valentine West, M. Sage, Gregg Kowalsky, and Austrian ambient stalwart Fennesz explore richly textured mines of foreboding glee. 

Suspicion is the word when considering Zelienople’s eerie horse-carriage clip-clop, Nick Malkin’s neon-lit noir-jazz, or Carmen Villain’s gripping dub excursion. Elsewhere Ki Oni, Takagi Masakatsu, and Mary Lattimore (joined here by Paul Sukeena) provide glimmers of warmth amidst a tortured chill. 

Notable is the resurrection of Lotus Plaza and his solemnly hopeful piano composition, while barren hallucinations courtesy of Alex Zhang Hungtai, Ilyas Ahmed, and Danny Paul Grody set the stage for a third act confrontation from Atlantans Fit of Body and Algiers, providing a one-two serving of sensual unrest and cautionary homily.  

With hope and resolve shimmering through the final moments of our journey, know that all proceeds from the digital and cassette editions go directly toward Feminist Women's Health Center, an Atlanta-based nonprofit providing safe, accessible, and compassionate abortion and gynecological care to all those who need it without judgement.

“They have a nice way of using breaks,” my friend Jesse said. An undersell of an introduction to say the least for Kyoto based production madhouse Stones Taro. With a sound defined by refined jubilance Stones Taro have consistently been delivering uptempo bass workouts, unreserved breakbeat frenzy, and pleasantly unnerving grooves for years now. Following up standout releases on Bristol bass institution Scuffed Records, Stones Taro are back with a solid as a rock release on Body Action Music a.k.a. BAM.

This Body Action Music label is firmly on my radar to say the least. Launching last year with two absolutely beautiful tracks from Human Resources, B.A.M. has only continued to prove they’re worth with this latest release from Stones Taro. This latest EP is four expertly mixed tracks that seamlessly balance unnerving deepness and lived-in groove. Bolting Bits is happy to share “Rabbits” — a restless groove bass-driven journey that shows just how glossy the wormhole can be.

The last days of summer were here, he watched from his window, looking out upon a bedraggled city in the glow of the dying sun. Outside they were dancing from the East to the West for they feared not the darkness which would soon fall and engulf the bleak, burgeoning chaos of a place. Sweet in the beginning and bitter in the end. 

Feelings is a fun loving London based record label which delights and pleases. Their previous releases have been from the likes of Kasra V, Larry Houl and 1-800 Girls but now they are joined by a a duo, Baby Rollén & Gallegos.

Unknown Mobile should change his name to Banger Mobile because I feel like every time one Levi’s tune hits my ears I’m literally fuckin’ reelin’ for the dancefloor. “Tired”, his contribution to a killer various artists compilation on These Things Take Time hits on all the right levels and might be my favorite from his growing discography. Reviews aren’t supposed to be sad, but I’m pretty fucking sad that I can’t get absolutely destroyed by this tune on one of my local rave systems. I know, times are tough right now, but we will persevere and slaps like this will get the dancefloor time they deserve. OR WILL THEY!? I don’t fuckin’ know, okay. All I know is that I’d trade 30 Molson Canadian’s for a chance to take this tune out for a rip at Panorama Bar.

Normally, I’d have the words to describe the tune in finer detail. In the past I’ve given breakdowns of specific instrumentation choices and I’d point out the track’s perceived genre influences. BUT LIKE, THAT IS NOT RELEVANT RIGHT NOW BECAUSE I’M TOO BUSY SMASHING THE REPEAT BUTTON WITH MY WHOLE FUCKING FACE. PLEASE GOD SOMEONE MAKE ME A 45-MIN VERSION OF THIS TUNE. It’s really just everything I love about the current flavor of tech house and deep house and labels like Casa Voyager, Coymix, Dance All Day, etc. Floaty yet PUMPY, driving, spacey, punchy, techy, fuck man. Proper grammar goes right out the window when a track hits like “Tired” does.

Anyways, I hope ya’ll enjoy the one review I’ll write this year, and I hope it came across that I really really really love this tune. And for the love of all that is holy please check out the full project. Regularfantasy has assembled a serious cast of characters for this one and there are plenty of other amazing tunes to be heard.

Next up on Bliss Point is "Fp" / "Riza", two expertly crafted house cuts from Ko Yang, a DJ, producer and promoter out of Kyoto, Japan.

A founding member of the long running City Boy Lounge parties in Osaka, Ko Yang and friends have hosted a number of familiar names - Axel Boman, Soichi Terada, Shinichiro Yokota, and Fatima Yamaha, to name a few.

CBL is a homegrown affair. The crew bring their own system to the back of a cafe once a month to heat up the early half of a good night out. “After the party finishes, everyone relaxes outside the cafe,” Ko Yang writes. “Then they miss the last train and head to the nightclub.”

“Our party is the warm up for night. That’s our responsibility for music culture in Osaka.”

I’m excited to welcome Ko Yang into the Bliss Point family with "Fp" / "Riza", two exquisite dance floor constructions from a well seasoned DJ and party person.
