B-One is a South African Dj, event organizer, founder of his own educational/creative/ entertainment company called Purist Form, and largely an arts activist within the Hip Hop movement. 

Background

Dj B-One was born and raised in the Eastern Cape in East London’s Mdantsane township  and is known as Buntu Tyali by his close friends and family. He grew up in a family of music lovers and musicians alike which sparked and tuned his keen interest and specific ear for the quality sounds of many an artist and genre. During his middle school years he took up studies in the basics of music by learning to play the piano, reading, and writing music notes. 
It was during his high school years that he started to collect various types of music on cassette tapes and vinyl. Amongst the genres he collected were Roots Rock Reggae/ Dub, Hip Hop, Soul and Jazz music. His avid Jazz and Soul ear lead him to explore the avenues of Hip Hop music because of its element of sampling. 
Growing up in a family of political activism, B-One felt an affinity with the message he found in the black consciousness of some of the Hip Hop lyricists, and this lead him to want to share this message with others in his immediate surroundings. The racial politics of South Africa had charged him to make his voice heard through these artists. And so the art of Djing became his weapon of choice in the late 90’s. B-One wanted more than just a hobby; this became his true means of expression. Along this musical journey he has had the opportunity of working alongside some of South Africa’s most respected artists as well as having played alongside various international artists. This allowed him to see the diverse possibilities which djing and music could bring. 
Career Highlights
	In 2001 He was employed as a volunteer producer/ presenter at Imonti FM, a community radio station based in East London’s CBD. By 2002 he became the station’s music librarian as well. 
	His project ‘Forces of Nature’ was launched in 2002: a current affair arts talk show aimed at the youth of Mdantsane and Duncan Village, which was held at a communal space in the town centre.
	In 2003 B-One decided to find a space to showcase East London’s local Hip Hop talent by hosting regular park jams where he would dj and play his unique selection of music. 
	All the while he had been djing for the Eastern Cape’s renowned Hip Hop outfit ‘Life Forces’ with whom he had merged in 2002. 
	In 2004 he moved to Cape Town and soon found like-minded musicians who were looking to stage themselves and expose their craft to the locals. That is how the Tapedeck Circuitry sessions came about. So from 2006 until 2008 he was the designated dj, and it was here that he became more familiar with Cape Town’s Hip Hop artists who were features in the Circuitry. 
	The Purist Form was officially launched in 2008 when B-One returned to East London. Purist Form was his brainchild – a concept to diversify the music movement he had been ploughing for many years as a dj and activist of sound. 
	After two successful years of events in East London, B-One decided to introduce the Purist Form experience to Capetonians in 2010. 
The Present
B-One’s Purist Form events have been received very well and the concept has grown many branches, namely bringing the focus of music and urban fashion culture amongst inner city dwellers together. He’s currently working on a music and sneaker culture feature called ‘All Soled Out’ which highlights the history and trends of sneaker culture globally. 
Looking Ahead
What the future holds for B-One is to build on his community activism and to build his brand Purist Form. He also has the vision of providing himself more performance and music exchange platforms for the overseas market as what he as to offer is a uniquely South African experience with his eye on the whole world.
