Following on from Caldera’s 13 17 EP, Boogie Box invites Otik to the fold for an excursion into fresh and vibrant club music unbound by genre. London-based producer Ashley Thomas is perfectly aligned with the Boogie Box’s desire for unconventional angles on dancefloor-focused sounds with bassweight tendencies, and his ever-growing back catalogue proves the point via releases for the likes of Nous, Keysound and Durkle Disco. 

The EP opens with Blasphemy, a heads-down workout that exercises restraint as it tunnels into its groove. Otik’s attention to detail is plain to hear, as side-chained harmonic textures and processed voices pivot around the snaking rhythm of the drums, but the overall effect is subliminal and meditative. Unshut is twitchier from the outset, using bright swipes of chord and a wriggling bed of sound to shape out the personality of the track. Once again the dynamics of the track are executed with a cool head, using inventive approaches and conjuring up a fractured, nostalgic atmosphere in the process. 

Four Feet immediately strikes for the heart with its front and centre synths and re-pitched vocals. The beat is just as striking when it locks in – a tumbling, intricate construction made up of tiny shards of organic matter falling in loose but purposeful unison. Metrist, fresh from a recent drop on Timedance, steps up with a remix of Four Feet that does away with the emotive elements and instead opts for a future-shocking trip into pure electronica. Largely drawing on the complex percussion, Metrist uses those clattering textures as a springboard into chemically-treated sound design acrobatics and leftfield rave energy. 

Both the originals and remix alike opt for inventive creative decisions over dancefloor functionality, but never at the expense of the club potential of the resulting tracks. This is music that positively celebrates the breaking down of barriers, taking the notion of dance music somewhere exciting and new, but importantly somewhere it still bangs.

Belgian producer Cabasa continues to seek for boundaries between beatless and rhythmic frameworks. 

‘Valleyfield’ starts things off with fluid synth work floating around a resonating, syncopated drum pattern before ‘Excess’ offers a dark yet uplifting aesthetic delivering winding polyrhythms, hypnotising oscillations and delicately broken percussion.

‘Cats On Scooters’ creates a captivating atmosphere through metallic melodies, sharp stabbing features and a warm bassline. London based producer Otik, known for outings on Keysound, Nous Disques and DEXT provides a sense of euphoria in his remix through angelic pads, weighty kicks and crystalline ambience.

For those new to Cain, a regular on Highlife Records (a sub-label of Huntleys & Palmers), you have been missing out. He’s known for fusing his love of traditional music from around the world with infectiously rhythmic drum pattern writing, stand-out melodies and futuristic bass work.

And this release is no different. Seeing as we are a record label based in the Middle East, Cain jumped on the opportunity to dig for Arabic influenced drums and rhythms to build the EP around. 

The results are dope! And just in time for the summer season.

For the fourth installation on Boogie Box Records, Appleblim links up with the Middle East crew to deliver one of two EPs planned for 2018.

First up. Two original tracks by the Bristolian artist, Vurstep and Dream Wisdom. Signature Appleblim crossover sound, floating between Bass, D&B, Electronica and House influences, with early Carl Craig/Psyche/BFC and 4 Hero watching over.

On the B Side, Vurstep gets a rework by Shed and Forest Drive West. Always on point, Shed does what he does best. A grooving old school flavored bass and breakbeats remix. Followed by Forest Drive West's stripped down, mind humping, feet tapping basement flavor.

STL ‘Constructive: No Words Required’  - the debut release on Boogie Box Records  – gets reimagined by dub specialists Juniper, Fold and Jonas Friedlich this August.

Launched last year, Boogie Box have only put out four releases but its discography is impressive to say the least, with Shed, Forest Drive West, Komon, Pablo Mateo, Cain, Causa and Appleblim all dropping quality productions and remixes. Its debut release came from enigmatic artist STL, renowned for timeless productions on labels like Perlon, Echochord and Smallville, not to mention his own platform Something.

For its fifth release, Boogie Box enlist the talents of Meandyou duo Juniper, Aus Music’s Fold, and Molten Moods and Four Triangles’ Jonas Friedlich - who’s also appeared on The Trilogy Tapes and Permanent Vacation as Carl Gari. Each rework has been made without the availability of the original stems, resulting in a uniquely interesting approach.

Juniper delivers shuffled rhythms in their two dubs of ‘Haze & Kraze’, kicking things off using twisted blips and metallic effects in the first before a contrasting second version utilises crunchy top lines, mesmerising pads and echoing samples.

On the flip, the first take of ‘Hide &Seek’ comes from Fold, delivering heavily reverberant percussion, stereo panned reggae - influenced guitar strums and a rumbling low-end. Finally, Jonas Friedlich’s meandering take on ‘Hide & Seek’ rounds things off with a heavy, modulated bass groove and dark atmospherics.

Brighton-based producer Caldera joins up with Boogie Box Records offering four broken techno cuts titled ‘13 17’ out this November.

Originally from Germany, Caldera has been making steady progress within the off kilter techno scene whether as a resident at Brighton’s Patterns, or releases on WNCL Recordings, Noorden and his Riviera Club label. His first production outing of the year so far, Caldera now joins Boogie Box’s ever impressive roster of artists, following releases from the likes of STL, Cain, Causa and Appleblim, not to mention remixes from Shed, Forest Drive West, Fold, Jonas Friedlich and Juniper.

Kicking things off, ‘Akman’s Rhythm’ deploys organic rolling percussion fused harmoniously over the intricate, outlandish melody and fluid bass line whilst ‘Old Hands’ delivers spaced-out, leftfield drums balanced with soothing resonance and warm vibrations.

‘Anaconda Legs’ offers dusty grooves throughout, keeping it deep and fluid through subtle, fluttering synths and hypnotic oscillations. Finally, ‘A Moment To Breathe’ pitches things down, incorporating a darker atmosphere as unfolding chugged out pulsations join recondite ambience.

Caldera ’13 17’ drops on Boogie Box Records on 19th November 2018.
