A new chapter for French label @sensory-cells begins. "A first edition, a first release, and the starting point of an adventure devoted to sensory exploration, music, and human collaboration. Born from the desire to connect science and art, matter and emotion, texture and perception, Sensory Cells envisions sound as a medium for sensation."

Project called "Metallic Initiation" opens the series of their Various Artists Compilations - a cycle of musical explorations devoted to exploring synesthetic links through music, around various subjects. For this first edition, metal becomes the thread, expressed through its textures, reflections, and raw sonic presence.

Guest artist H2O, together with the label’s founders Konalgad, Marine Tartine, and ergen101, deliver the debut 12’’ vinyl release of Sensory Cells. A deep sonic study woven with intricate sound design and atmospheres moving between broken techno, ambient, and the more enveloping sides of techno.

A heartfelt dedication to his son Isaias, ‘Aspirations for Young Xol’ takes us through the life of a pillar in the electronic music community - Santiago Salazar. From his formative years spent in California to his connection with Detroit and the passing of a childhood friend, the long-player’s tracks signpost the musician’s significant experiences, both positive and negative. This meaningful body of work was released digitally on Pastel Voids and now Rekids release the album on wax.

‘Saturated Fear’ sets a deep tone for the LP, flanging melodies and echoing claps float through the composition before the album’s title track ‘Aspirations for Young Xol’ offers haunting arpeggios with occasional acidic overtones which are cleverly offset by beautifully designed lead synth transitions. ‘Bloodlines’ follows a similar musical vein with delayed bass riffs that are suspended above shimmering hihats and a weighted kick.

Santiago provides three beatless pieces throughout, which digress into more emotional territory whilst offering brief respite from his heavier drum work. ‘Xol’s Pain’ combines orchestral strings and swelling synthesisers which build tension with a subtly complex, evolving motif. Both ‘Dark Matter’ and ‘Ode to Stinson’ use arresting atmospheres, warped arpeggios and ethereal pads which lull the listener into a retrospective mood.

An intensity builds in the later tracks, a gritty but powerful low end provides a solid foundation in ‘Orange Blossom Thump”, eventually making way for a hectic and elastic lead synth before ‘Pachuco Dub’ displays drones that build a dissonant pressure in which the complex tom rhythms and rolling hi hats can grow. ‘Sarah Rivera’ hypnotises with its delectable chord progressions and complimentary melodies which seem to float above a rigid drum composition to close the album with style.

Santiago Salazar - Saturated Fear

Crave instantly shines in his solo debut for Woodwork. Mark Thibideau manifests his improvisational live performance style into two energetic tracks, Microdots and Danny B with a more subdued counterpart, In Pipe Words to round out this pristine representation of an artist with a pure and inspired love of synthetic music. His melodic and harmonic sensibilities display the soul of detroit techno through various flavours of synth pop hooks, while the abstract sonic imagery echoes his industrial and ambient leanings. Wood004 Crave 02 - Microdots (sunkissed Remix)

Multiplex returns this November with ‘Obey The Night’, a split EP between Orlando Voorn and Luca Lozano which each artist remixing the other’s track on the package. Danish imprint Multiplex has been releasing material from many esteemed artists in Techno for many years, with the back catalogue featuring projects from the likes of Dan Curtin, John Tejada and Mark Broom to name a few. Here we see the imprint welcome the return of Dutch R&S artist Orlando Voorn, who released on the label under his Ultra guise back in 2002 and most recently with ‘Planet Ultra - The Lost Tracks’ earlier this year, here he shares the release with Klasse Wrecks founder Luca Lozano.

In 2020, we released our first vinyl record, as well as a few digital releases, and are looking to build on this with a new EP from Jean de la Baptiste entitled Estuaries [NH005]. The sounds on Estuaries range from garage, breaks, and house, and are inspired by lived experience astride timtumili minanya/Derwent River. The seven tracks can be previewed here, for which we plan to release on Friday 30 October.

A major force as honcho of nipaluna/Hobart’s Neu Hörizöns, their machiavellian shape-shifting deejay sets regularly twists themselves through sounds as diverse as deep house, industrial, ambient, juke, jazz, dnb and deconstructed club, across a slew of different aliases.
