This was meant to do be a bit of a chilled end to the weekend with Ed playing the first two and a half hours and taking over, but a load of peeps came down from the previous night at Trax and it turned into a little beach party. Great way to end the tour – and thanks to Ed for the amazing hospitality.

PHILM was launched in April of 2020 as a depot for unseen film photos of the band Phish shot by fans.  

By 2021, the account had delivered a book and expanded beyond the jam world -  featuring all kinds of music new and old. 

“I needed to get the jam band fans to eat their vegetables. If you like the Disco Biscuits you should know who Can is,” says Brian aka PHILM.  

In the last five years PHILM has released magazines, more books, merch and a newly launched podcast.  

Brian, who also founded the band Ex Cops, continues to also make music with House Band - an all improv group featuring various LA session musicians.

People keep asking "what's this song??" WE MADE ALL THESE SONGS // This is one of our side projects: ACTUAL MAGIC, where we make music with samples and live instrumentation by our friends JAVELIN. This is a mixtape we recorded live on DUBLAB radio last spring. We wanted to hip you to this and let you know we have more music coming. Edits, 45's, 12"s etc. This music is very close to our hearts. ACTUAL MAGIC (GOLDEN VOYAGE PART 1)

Our mixtapes are based on original vinyl records and we seek to present unheard or forgotten music to the world every time we bring out a new mix. And so it often takes time for everything to fall into the right place. We approached Gouranga a while back and are happy now to be presenting this special mix on their channel. We sincerely hope you enjoy this joint and drop a comment below!

What glues this mix together is a string of songs connected to capoeira, samba and afro-brazilian music. And the lovely sound of the berimbau. Some real gems are uncovered here - as the slow, promotion seven-inch Zaira song “Das Aldeias” or the heavy groove private label track Negro de Angola by Roberto Gomes. The inspiration to this mix grew out of a very special DJ gig for friends at the Capoeira Malungos 10 year anniversary in Copenhagen. A dance floor so open and full of energy that the records were almost crawling out of the DJ bag begging to be played.

Starting and ending slow, this is a dance floor mix for deep music lovers. But we recommend horizontally positioned enjoyment as well. Uplifting samba jazz tracks with a long cut-back session of the 2 minute Grupo Zurana tune breaks out in the middle and the last track slows down to present zoomed out Brazilian freak funk on the amazing Walter Franco track “Partir do Alto” where Walter chants throughout the song: I was taught by my Master. Indeed he was!
