Today’s Booms and Claps guest mix is brought to us by one of our favorite up and coming producers in the high-tempo hybrid bass music world: PDX’s Sigrah. His unique and diverse approach to 160/170 bpm is refreshing in a time when Ivy Lab knock-offs are a dime a dozen and the “halftime” label is getting thrown at basically any music written at 85 bpm that people don’t know how to classify. Sigrah’s production is just a strong on an ethereal jungley roller as it is on a chunky neuro hip-hop beat that belongs on Noisia Radio, which is displayed through his diverse releases on labels ranging from Rogue Dubs to STYLSS to Aufect. His tunes have seen support from big names all across the board, including Om Unit, Liquid Stranger, and Fracture, and he’s provided DJ support to pretty much every legendary artist in bass music you can think of (not to mention The Neon Icon himself, aka Jody 3 Moons, aka the Peach Panther, aka Iceberg Simpson, aka the one like RIFF RAFF). His range, production strength, and skills as a DJ shine through clear as day in this mix, and it is with great pleasure that we present to you the latest installment in the Booms and Claps mix series: BnC Mix 031: SIGRAH.

We're excited to introduce you to Folding City, a duo comprised of Self Evident of Vancouver, BC, and Blind Prophet out of New York (soon to be Portland, Oregon!). These guys have crafted a unique sound journey throughout many genres and vibes, and that's just how we like it. From left field 130 sounds, to some proper selects within the 160+ realm in the second half of the mix, there surely aren't any uninteresting moments to be had. When you have the support of Plastician, BunZer0, Dusk + Blackdown, J:Kenzo, Bukez Finezt, Sinistarr, DJ Madd, Greazus, Itoa, and Distance, you know you're doing something right. At about 35 percent unreleased material from Folding City and their own respective projects, this mix gives a good idea of what kind of material these dudes are currently sitting on. Enjoy~!

Booms and Claps Mix 033 comes to us from one of Calgary, AB’s finest exports: the ever-consistent, diverse, and tasteful OAKK. We’re big fans of Western Canada’s bass music output, and OAKK is a delicious and integral slice of that Canadian crop. His sound tells a tale of refined beauty, unpredictability and spontaneity, and pure graft. It’s minimal, yet explosive… soft, but speaks loudly… serious, but playful. Something we find admirable in a producer is never taking the obvious route in production and composition, and that’s the name of the game for OAKK: each track explores new territory while retaining the familiarity of his signature sound. Coming off a huge set this summer at Merritt, BC’s Bass Coast Festival, a phenomenal release on Greazus’ Aufect Records imprint in May, and a big year for his club night in Calgary, “New Wave”, 2018 has seen impressive growth for OAKK, and we’ll undoubtedly be keeping a close eye on him in 2019. 

Almost as impressive as his productions are his skills as a DJ, and this mix is a clear representation of his talent as a selector. Ranging from UK drill rap, dark 130 breaks, dubstep, footwork jungle, 85 bpm wonky hip-hop beats, halftime stompers, and several of his own vocal bootlegs and DJ edits, OAKK really goes the distance here and displays his commitment to diversity, flow, and distinctiveness. BnC Mix 033: OAKK

While the worlds of techno and dubstep have traditionally existed on separate planes without much opportunity for overlap, the past several years have seen those universes collide and spawn a landscape of deep 130 bpm beats that draw from the analog, raw sounds of techno, the driving rhythmic structures of breaks and 4 on the floor music, and the dark, low-end oriented vibe of dubstep. This hybrid sound has been supported by everyone from dubstep legends like Loefah, Biome, and Pinch, to techno dons like Hodge, to newcomers like Madam X, Walton, and Hypho.

Today’s installment in the Booms and Claps Mix Series comes to us from one of the most exciting newcomers to this sound: Manchester, UK’s HYPHO. With releases on labels ranging from the deep wonky dubstep and grime of Encrypted Audio to the dark breakbeats of Stanton Warriors’ Punks Music, Hypho has quickly solidified himself at the forefront of the hybrid 130 style over the past several years. He draws influence from all over the spectrum: jungle, jackin’ house, garage, drum and bass, and even donk music, as he recently stated in an interview with the massive bass music outlet UKF. After a huge summer in 2018 with a debut US tour and shows all over Europe, we can't wait to see what Hypho has up his sleeve for next year. Meet Barisone: a true tastemaker whose sets are almost as beloved as the man behind the music; and for good reason. Between his curation of the Wake the Town party series based in Portland, OR alongside local dons PRSN and Danny Corn, his status as a household name in the underground electronic music community up and down the West Coast, and his impressive resume of performances everywhere from Shambhala to Burning Man to Bass Coast, it was only a matter of time before we had him on mix duties for Booms and Claps. Every Barisone mix has an entirely unique feel to it, but his signature sound always shines through, no matter the context, and the same can certainly be said for BnC Mix 035. Jon1st is what some might refer to as a "DJ's DJ." He exists in that oh-so-rare middle ground between technical proficiency, phenomenal taste, musicality, subtlety, and flow that eludes so many DJ's who fall into the "turntablist" category. His appreciation for unique sounds and equally unique approaches to performing and sharing those sounds creates the perfect storm of quality selection and presentation. We've been following Jon for years now, through his official scratch routines for artists like Ivy Lab and Sam Binga, his 2013 Online DMC World Championship win among a multitude of other notable turntablism awards and successes, his radio podcast for Fly High Society and countless other guest mixes for outlets ranging from Ninja Tune's Solid Steel Radio to Tim Parker's NTS to Hyponik to Noisey, and of course, his ever-impressive production chops. Since 2010, he has been doing an annual year-end wrap-up megamix including all of his favorite tunes from the past year blended into an hour-long medley of Jon1st-approved stompers, and we couldn't think of a better way to end 2018 for Booms and Claps. We sat down (metaphorically) for a quick check-in with the man himself to chat about his recent releases, touring, the existential meaning of DJing (apparently it's a lot more than playing two songs at the same time), and of course, this year's wrap-up mix aka BnC Mix 036: Jon1st (2018 Year-End MegaMix). We’ve had our eye on Russian footwork prodigy Anna Fruit aka A.Fruit for a couple years now, from her early releases on Sequel One Records and Pixelord’s imprint Hyperboloid Records, to her recent heavier jungle and drum and bass inspired productions on Hospital Records’ Med School and the champion Irish label, Rua Sound. Currently residing in St. Petersburg, Anna is coming off a big few years of touring, with notable appearances at Outlook Festival, Hospitality on the Beach, and club shows all over Asia, Europe and beyond. Her smooth but frantic 160 BPM blend of juke, ghettotech, and bass music draws just as much influence from hip-hop and synthwave as it does from drum and bass, and we couldn’t be more excited to feature her unique sound on the Booms and Claps mix series. When we think of the West Coast dancehall scene, a few names immediately come to mind, and Deejay Theory is always at the top of the list. A mainstay in the San Francisco Bay Area for over a decade as a DJ, promoter, and producer, Jake Krauth AKA Deejay Theory has put in more work for the "tropical bass" movement than most, and it shows. His laundry list of collaborations, remixes, and production credits range from Beenie Man and Sizzla to Keys N Krates and Anna Lunoe, and he's toured all over the world as a top dancehall selector. His unique approach to dancehall from a bass music and hip-hop perspective has made him one of the most respected tastemakers in the world, and we couldn't be more excited to welcome him for the next installment in the Booms and Claps Mix Series. BnC Mix 038: Deejay Theory

While most of his releases have been on UK DnB and bass music labels like Metalheadz, Exit Records, Hospital, and 20/20 LDN, Jeremy Howard AKA Sinistarr is unapologetically Detroit to the bone. His music fits in as comfortably at a Chicago ghetto-tech and juke party as it does at a Bristol jungle rave or LA beat music showcase, and his deep techno and electro roots shine through clear as day in his productions and DJ sets. This raw Midwest approach to the sounds of British uptempo bass music and American hip-hop creates a diverse and unique sound unlike any other in the scene. Sinistarr truly stands alone as a pioneer in bending the often rigid and intimidating "rules" of traditional drum and bass. While the hybrid sound of footwork, jungle, halftime DnB, beats, and hip-hop is now relatively accepted in the drum and bass community, that wasn't always the case, and Sinistarr was a trailblazer in changing that dynamic and loosening up the decades-long establishment of strict "DRUM AND BASS ONLY" rigidity in the DnB scene.

Coming off a big year of touring the world and some great releases on a few up-and-coming labels like Beat Machine Records and Booms and Claps favorite Unchained Recordings, Sinistarr is poised for a very successful 2019 with tons of cool projects in the works. Today happens to be his birthday, and we couldn't be more excited that he's decided to grace us with a phenomenal mix of sounds he's feeling to celebrate. Anytime you hear the infamous "LET'S MOVE" Slick Shoota sample straight out of the gate, you know you're in for a ride. Sinistarr covers all the bases on this one, from bangin' drum and bass rollers to some huge unreleased beats from the likes of Canadian all-stars OAKK and Groves. Meet James Ongley AKA Murder He Wrote: self-proclaimed mystery writer and amateur detective by day, prodigal son of UK Funky by night. While we haven't had the chance to research any of his investigative work or read any of his novels, his all-star status in the UK Funky community and beyond as a producer, DJ, and label-head certainly speaks for itself. After a few standout early releases on Roska's Kicks and Snares imprint and big mixes for outlets like Fabric, Rinse FM, and BBC Radio One, James continued to solidify himself as a beacon of influence and taste making in the scene with his own exciting new label Rhythm Athletic. His productions stand out with a degree of smoothness that can be rare and difficult to achieve in an erratic rhythmic pattern like UK funky's. Where his peers often rely too heavily on excessive percussion, James' beats fall right into place without trying to do too much.

After catching his performance at Bass Coast Festival in 2018, Vancouver, BC based producer/DJ Leland River has quickly become one of our favorite selectors on the West Coast. His ear is impeccable, especially for vibey 140 bpm tunes that span from grime and rap to dubstep, club music, and downtempo, and his productions are top-notch to boot. A truly remarkable skill as a DJ is to take a collection of relatively low-energy tracks and weave them together into an exciting journey that flows smoothly and keeps the listener engaged, and that’s exactly what Leland does with his mixes. Once again, British Columbia has blessed us with another talented artist with a knack for high quality blends and unique selections and today, we’re proud to present BnC Mix 041: Leland River.

While footwork culture originated in Chicago and is still primarily being championed by Chicago producers, DJs, and dancers, international artists like Marius Mevold AKA Slick Shoota have also been instrumental in bringing the sound to a worldwide audience by incorporating elements of other genres like jungle, drum & bass, and grime. His high-octane hybrid club productions are always recognizable by the frenetic pounding groove, rap and ragga vocal chops, and of course, his infamous “LET’S MOVE” tag. An official Teklife member since 2015, Slick Shoota has laid a foundation of strong underground relevancy, while also peeking into the more mainstream side of dance music here and there with a release on Diplo’s Mad Decent and a widely supported rave smasher bootleg of Hudson Mohawke’s “Cbat” that is still making the rounds on dancefloors and festival stages all over the world despite being released almost 7 years ago. For many electronic music fans getting more interested in uptempo dance music, Slick Shoota bridges the gap into the wonderful world of 160 bpm and beyond.

We’ve been huge fans of Marius’ work for the better part of a decade now, so it goes without saying that we’re hugely honored to have him on the Booms and Claps mix series. For “BnC Mix 042: Slick Shoota,” he delivers a 38 minute offering of club-ready originals, VIPs, edits, and remixes, many of which are featured on his most recent album release “VIP VAULTS.” The 20-track collection of largely never-before-heard tracks Slick produced between 2013 and 2018. BnC Mix 042: Slick Shoota

If you've been paying attention to the deeper side of "drum and bass adjacent" music at all for the past eight years, you've undoubtedly taken notice of the Bristol based, Papa Om Unit led, powerhouse of an imprint known as Cosmic Bridge.  This label has led the charge in the exploration of ethereal soundscapes, dubwise textures, jungle breaks, and autonomic beat structures at 160/170 bpm, and a young lad by the name of Crypticz has been one of our absolute favorite artists to emerge from the Cosmic Bridge sonic incubator. With releases on other notable labels such as Diffrent Music and 31 Recordings, as well as a massive recently self-released EP entitled "Patterns" that has been in consistent rotation for us here at Booms and Claps, Crypticz has easily solidified himself as a leader in the world of halftime drum and bass, jungle, and ambient beats. His sound is polished and clean, yet still has a warm quality that feels natural and organic... but most importantly, his work as a song-writer transcends the traditional structure of DJ-oriented music and creates layer after layer of auditory story-telling that takes us on a journey through the mind of Jordan Parsons AKA Crypticz. 

While he's largely gained notoriety for his thought-provoking storytelling through production, he's equally talented at crafting a journey through the DJ mix format. We're honored to have him as the latest guest on the Booms and Claps mix series, and we couldn't be more excited to present the absolutely epic BnC Mix 043: Crypticz. Buckle up, it's quite the ride.

The latest installment in the Booms and Claps mix series comes to us from a British duo who we've had our eyes on for a few years now: the collaborative project of Will Marquiss & Mike Holliday AKA Mystic State. It's hard to put these two in a box, with influences ranging from drum and bass and jungle to hip-hop and R&B down to dubstep and garage, but with an impressive list of label affiliations including J:Kenzo's Artikal Music and uptempo titans like Flexout Audio and Halogen Music, their unique and clean production style clearly rings true whatever the genre. We first took notice of Mystic State several years back with their vibey footwork-adjacent beat "808 Gravediggin'" on the aforementioned Halogen Music, and since then, we've seen them release everything from meditative 140bpm stompers to chunky hip-hop beats that you would probably catch on Noisia Radio. Although both members hail from the Bristol area, they're now split internationally, with Will in Calgary, AB (We sure do love our neighbors to the North!) and Mike still in the UK, so expect to see more North American appearances from Mystic State soon! We're very excited to welcome them to the mix series, and without further ado, we're proud to present BnC Mix 045: Mystic State.

We are extremely excited to bring you the 46th installment of the mix series today, featuring the one and only Danny Corn of the Wake the Town crew. This mix follows two incredibly well received performances: early Saturday morning at Bass Coast last month, and opening for Om Unit in Portland this past weekend. We can safely say his sets are coveted everywhere he goes. In addition to his excellent taste as a DJ, Danny has also been in the studio working on some exciting new material with fellow Portlander, Chrome Wolves. Lucky for us, three tunes from this collaboration can be heard throughout the mix. Danny's refreshing take on bass music is always appreciated here at Booms and Claps, and this mix is a prime example of that. We hope you enjoy this as much as we do!

BnC Mix 046: Danny Corn

Today's installment in the Booms and Claps mix series comes to us from London's Lewis James in the form of a 47 minute turbo-charged high octane journey through halftime drum and bass beats, footwork, jungle, electro-influenced ghettotech and juke, and 160 bpm rave music. We've had our eye on Lewis for quite some time now, from his early self-released Bandcamp beats, to releases on the legendary Lowriders Recordings and Rua Sound, to his recent success with major uptempo bass music imprints like 1985 Music and Astrophonica Recordings, and we couldn't be more excited to see where he goes from here. From what we're hearing in this mix, it seems like he's taken an interest in the four on the floor 160 bpm electro sound that has been championed recently by folks like Fracture and Om Unit, and we certainly hope there's more to come from him in that vein. BnC Mix 048: Mandai

Today's installment in the Booms and Claps Mix Series comes to us from Bristol-based uptempo bass music producer Hyroglifics, and while most would consider him first-and-foremost a drum and bass producer, he's not quite so easy to categorize. He exploded onto the scene six years ago with his freshman excursion, "BINARY Vol. 1" on the widely respected Critical Sound label. This release took the world of "DnB adjacent" music by storm with two absolutely gully halftime 170bpm bangers ("Killamanaman" and "Bay City Ballers Club) that quickly garnered support from legends like Om Unit, Ivy Lab, Sam Binga, and Alix Perez.

Ever since then, he's been tracing the lines between drum and bass, hip hop, jungle, trap beats, dub, footwork, and everything in between, and has explored beyond his home at Critical Sound to Flexout Audio, Perez's 1985 Music, and Fracture's Astrophonica, achieved Red Bull Music Academy alum status, created a new beat music alias Rippps (with a release on the legendary Alpha Pup Records to boot) and toured all over the world. Most recently, his collaborative EP, "BS6"with Detroit-bred Sinistarr (BnC Mix Series alum!) was released on Sherelle and Naina's new London-based label Hooversound, one of the most exciting fresh imprints of the year.

While he came up in the drum and bass scene, Hyroglifics is certainly no stranger to other tempos and sounds. Today's offering travels through slappinin' electro and breaks, dubstep and grime, and ends up in 160-170 bpm rave territory that touches on ghettotech, jungle, beats, and bass. His classic well-sought-after dubplate collaboration with Fixate, "Daft" even makes an appearance, an unreleased iconic track that first started making the rounds at least 5 years ago. The mix is a targeted expedition into the realm of high-octane bass music, at 115% the whole 30 minutes through. Strap up and lock in for a wild ride on BnC Mix 049: Hyroglifics.

Cross-cultural connections are more valuable than gold in the music scene. Jungle and footwork are great on their own, but together? That's where the magic happens. R&B? Cool. Grime? Great. R&B/Grime fusion? Sign us UP. Rap? Yup. Rock? Yeah... Well, maybe we could have just skipped the 90's/2000's rap-rock era and the whole world would've been just fine, but you get my point.

LA-based (via NYC) Anna Morgan brings those cross-cultural connections to life through her work as a producer, DJ, label-head (shoutout Worst Behavior Recordings), promoter, and even fellow blog curator (The Footwork Jungle!!!). She draws on inspiration from all over the world, with a focus in high-energy and uptempo club music. Drum & bass, dancehall, electro, footwork, rap, afrobeat, ghettotech, dubstep, and wonky beat music all make appearances in the sphere of Anna Morgan's influence, whether it be a party she's throwing, a DJ mix she's piecing together, or a tune she's writing.

With today's offering, Anna uses our mix series as a canvas to blend all of those influences into an hour-long journey through her world of soundsystem culture and infectious energy. The work truly speaks for itself, so I'll leave it at that: we're proud to present BnC Mix 050: Anna Morgan.
