Hull-based collective O’Phantom return with their first release since their self-titled, self-funded EP dropped in May this year. The new single, Something (I Know), marks a bold continuation of the band’s introspective, lo-fi sound. Featuring Lucy Jowett (Dead Naked Hippies), the track builds on O’Phantom’s signature aesthetic - melding shimmering guitars, dual harmonies, and ghostly layered vocals to quietly yet powerfully explore themes of loss, ageing, and isolation. 

Fresh from two packed shows at this year’s Great Escape in Brighton and a run of dates across grassroots music venues nationwide, the DIY East Yorkshire outfit embodies the spirit of the UK’s underground music scene - one that values community over social media hype. Songwriter Daniel reflects on the single: “Something (I Know) was the first song we wrote together. It started as a few chords on an acoustic guitar and grew into this brooding, atmospheric post-punk track - thanks in no small part to Rowan’s (bass) knack for deconstructing song structures. Working with Matt Peel (TRAAMS, Yard Act, Honesty) on the recording really brought it to life. We came out with a track we’ll love forever.”

Showcasing two generations of North Carolina hip-hop, Reuben Vincent and 9th Wonder break down the making of tracks from their new album, ‘WELCOME HOME.’ The album combines 9th Wonder’s classic, sample-based production with Reuben’s young-man, old-soul rapping, as exemplified on tracks such as “DRE & SIDNEY” and “GOTTA GET IT.” The latter was inspired by Al B. Sure’s 1988 hit “Nite and Day,” with 9th Wonder noting, “I’m always big about taking a song of one generation and moving it to another.” The track “GET IT GIRL” is rooted in a studio session that 9th Wonder cut with Wale almost 20 years ago — but Reuben made it his own. “He killed it,” the producer says. “It’s destined to be a bop.” Listen now.

Rock and Roll Hall of Famer Bootsy Collins is releasing his 23rd studio record, Album of the Year Number One Funkateer on April 11 via Bootzilla Records/Roc Nation. Tracing back his legendary career, there was a pivotal moment: when James Brown hired the Pacemakers—the band led by teenage Bootsy and his brother Catfish—to replace his backing group in 1970. 

He also led the side project Bootsy’s Rubber Band, recording multiple gold-certified albums, and began contributing to recordings by artists including Iggy Pop and Herbie Hancock. When Rolling Stone put together their list of the Greatest Bassists of All Time, Bootsy was ranked in the top five. 

Collins has reached new generations for more than five decades. He collaborated with superstar Deee-Lite, provided the lead vocal on Fatboy Slim’s Grammy-winning hit “Weapon of Choice,” and acted as the narrator on Silk Sonic’s platinum album An Evening with Silk Sonic (he even gave Bruno Mars and Anderson .Paak the name for their project). 

The 17 tracks on Album of the Year cover all the bases, from the silly Bootsy to the sexy Bootsy (“Pure Perfection,” which uses a delivery that Bruno Mars calls “the Bootsy bedroom voice”) to the social commentary of “Tonight We Rise.” 

In addition to working with young artists like Barbara Teleki and Bootdullivan, Collins brought in some other legendary contributors including longtime friend Dave Stewart of Eurythmics. The album also reunites him with Snoop Dogg, Ice Cube, and tha Dogg Pound.
