Way Out

The story of Pitchben is one about consistency.

It’s the 80s. A young boy is growing up to the soundtrack of Electro Funk, drawing influence from the likes of Jackson, The Whispers and D-Train and developing a genuine passion for music. Around 20 years later in 2011, this boy is releasing his debut album “Pitchslap” on Compost Records.

This root of funk has been a constant since his childhood. Exploring new territories in the 90s Pitchben, known as ‘M-Tech’ at the time, started to deejay and produce at the young age of 13.

Working the turntables like an instrument, he became one of the key figures in the world of Scratching and Turntablism. In 2002 he won the German DMC finals with a scratched interpretation of “Break Machine – Street Dance”.

Since this rather intense excursion Pitchben is focusing on production, sounddesign and audio engineering, crafting as well his own music but also coproducing the works of other artists such as 6 time DJ World Champion ‘Rafik’.

Unsatisfied with the homestudio-path that has been taken by most contemporary music it is now his mission to not only bring back that authentic 80s sound, but to join the authentic production style of that era with a modern touch. This means: real scores for authentic string and brass sections were recorded by top notch musicians while the featured vocalists present skill levels easily comparable to those of 80s singers.

This teams up with huge synths and drums, creating the fresh big sound that can only be produced in a modern studio environment.
In 2010 Compost Records signed Pitchben for a full length album immediately after receiving only a two track demo. The final result “Pitchslap” will be available in November 2011 alongside 12” singles, remixes and some nice merchandise. Watch out.

Pitchben is currently preparing for live-appereances consisting of either a dj-set and a full stage show featuring live guitarist, electric bass player and vocalists.

Rock and Roll Hall of Famer Bootsy Collins is releasing his 23rd studio record, Album of the Year Number One Funkateer on April 11 via Bootzilla Records/Roc Nation. Tracing back his legendary career, there was a pivotal moment: when James Brown hired the Pacemakers—the band led by teenage Bootsy and his brother Catfish—to replace his backing group in 1970. 

He also led the side project Bootsy’s Rubber Band, recording multiple gold-certified albums, and began contributing to recordings by artists including Iggy Pop and Herbie Hancock. When Rolling Stone put together their list of the Greatest Bassists of All Time, Bootsy was ranked in the top five. 

Collins has reached new generations for more than five decades. He collaborated with superstar Deee-Lite, provided the lead vocal on Fatboy Slim’s Grammy-winning hit “Weapon of Choice,” and acted as the narrator on Silk Sonic’s platinum album An Evening with Silk Sonic (he even gave Bruno Mars and Anderson .Paak the name for their project). 

The 17 tracks on Album of the Year cover all the bases, from the silly Bootsy to the sexy Bootsy (“Pure Perfection,” which uses a delivery that Bruno Mars calls “the Bootsy bedroom voice”) to the social commentary of “Tonight We Rise.” 

In addition to working with young artists like Barbara Teleki and Bootdullivan, Collins brought in some other legendary contributors including longtime friend Dave Stewart of Eurythmics. The album also reunites him with Snoop Dogg, Ice Cube, and tha Dogg Pound.
