The MySpace Top 8 was never meant to change the music industry. Chillwave was never meant to be a genre—it started as a blogosphere joke. And Bora York was never meant to be a band—it began as a school project. Yet all three took on a life of their own, shaping an era of indie electronic music built on hazy nostalgia, warm synths, and melodic escapism. Now, after six years away, Bora York returns with "Melting on the Moon," a shimmering sonic love letter to the chillwave movement that first inspired them.

"I think I needed to distance myself from it for a while," says songwriter Chris Bartels, who also writes music as Elskavon, Dellwood, and Hi-Fi Cali. "I was trying so hard with this, in my head, being my ‘main’ project, hoping for so much with it. I was putting so much emotional stock into it that it was probably even sucking some of that original creative magic out of it. Bora York was essentially an accident—it started as a school project and turned into something exciting and unique. Then for a while, I tried to keep recreating that. Stepping back for a few years and only writing as I felt led creatively allowed me to let go—to just let it be."

While writing, Chris started curating a playlist he facetiously called "Chillwave Revival," letting himself become fully immersed in and inspired by the sun-faded synths and woozy nostalgia of Toro y Moi, Washed Out, MGMT, and Neon Indian. Before long, that feeling took over. "Melting on the Moon" is the result—a track that embraces the fuzzy textures and dreamlike melodies of early chillwave, yet with an undeniable modern pulse. It’s laced with Chris and Rebekah’s signature vocal chemistry and an irresistible post-chorus synth hook that lingers long after the first listen.

With past syncs in Netflix’s To All the Boys, Mr. Robot, The Middle, Criminal Minds, Target, Honda, and more, Bora York’s music has resonated far and wide. Press accolades from Clash Magazine, Neon Gold, Indie Shuffle, and Earmilk hailed their sound as “sublime,” “summertime radness,” and “impossible not to get swept up in.”

Now, Bora York embraces a new chapter—one that taps into the playfulness, freedom, and MySpace-era nostalgia of their earliest influences while letting the music just be.

With “Glow Hover,” Bora York returns to the neon-drenched dreamworld of their upcoming 4th album—a tongue-in-cheek but deeply heartfelt nod to the era of Myspace profiles, early DAW experiments, and the innocent chaos of college-age music discovery.

Bubbling with shimmering, pulsing synths, Chris’ signature blissfully-weird vocal play, and Rebekah’s undeniably catchy chorus hook, “Glow Hover” floats effortlessly in that sweet spot between nostalgia and now. It’s upbeat and strange, catchy and personal, like a Polaroid of a memory that never quite happened.

Chris says, “I’m finally making my chillwave-obsessed album. For real. It’s playful on purpose. Chillwave always had this ‘is this serious?’ thing going on… and I’ve leaned into that. It’s not trying to prove anything. It’s just me having fun again.”

And that fun is palpable—especially in the free-associative, effects-laden verses where Chris lets his subconscious wander (“your lyrics are weird” – Rebekah), before the song lifts into its featherlight chorus.

“Glow Hover” follows the same ethos that’s shaped this entire new era for Bora York: Patience. Play. Letting go of pressure. No more “shoulds.”

So here we are.
As Chris sings “Power lines to flowers dry / Electricity, outside / Long drives without asking why / Time will tell us, never mind,” you get a feeling there’s a loosening of the reins, inversely leading to possibly some of the Minnesota pop duo’s most memorable moments yet.

THE SONG:
Unknowingly when he started writing it, Bora York songwriter and producer Chris Bartels happened to be foreshadowing his own creative and emotional state with new single “I Finally Let My Heart Grow Again.”

With three children under the age of 6, and several other projects and commitments underway, Chris and Rebekah Bartels are hardly in a season of life with the luxury of time to be creative on a third Bora York album. In a seemingly endless creative funk, Bora York just wasn’t fun anymore for Chris.

Still, and always, a work in progress, there was a turning point a few months ago, when he stepped back and made a choice to worry less and focus less on the end results of things, and what Bora York “should look like.” Instead, trying to simply live in the moment of writing these songs, and go back to what birthed Bora York in the first place - having fun.

That feeling of brokenness, perhaps, is embodied in the experimental sounds of the track - glitched out synth beds, never fully in tune with each other, eerie and cinematic vocal samples, a dissonant main progression, and painfully sincere vocals.

“I’m a mess, it’s clear as day; but for some reason you stuck with me anyway.”

For awhile, Chris was wondering if Bora York had actually run its course, if it was time to move on. He was a mess. But he stuck with it anyway. 

And just maybe, when we’re in a painful time like this, if we let our heart grow again, little by little, there’s a new season on the other side.

The four and half years of writing the album Emotion Vertigo were far from a smooth process for us. I was in a seemingly endless creative funk, and considered the idea of calling it quits on the project entirely. There was a turning point when I stepped back and realized I had let worries and insecurities of what Bora York “should or shouldn’t look like” take priority.
