Dellwood is the latest musical chapter from Minneapolis-based artist and producer Chris Bartels, known for his expansive catalog of deeply atmospheric and emotive music under various monikers, including Elskavon, Blurstem, Olma, Glass Echoes, and more. With Dellwood, Bartels returns to his acoustic roots, blending intricate folk storytelling with cinematic ambient production to create an organic soundscape that is both intimate and expansive.

Inspired by the natural beauty of Minnesota and the vulnerability of personal experience, Dellwood’s music captures raw emotion through layered rubber-bridge-muted guitars, sonically stirring production, and haunting-yet-familiar vocals, ranging from airy falsetto to deep, rich bellows. Bartels’ love for adventuring his home state and the surrounding Midwest plays a central role in the creative process, with nature not only inspiring the songs but often acting as a co-writer of sorts. Frequently taking pen, pad, and guitar outside the studio walls, Bartels allows the landscapes around him to shape the emotional and sonic tones of Dellwood’s music.

Drawing influences from artists like Bon Iver, Novo Amor, Hazlett, and RY X, Dellwood finds beauty in quiet spaces, crafting songs that explore themes of longing, loss, and connection. The project highlights Bartels' ability to merge the organic with the atmospheric, utilizing field recordings and delicate guitar work to create soundscapes that resonate with listeners on a deeply personal level.

Minneapolis composer Chris Bartels has been writing ambient music under the name Elskavon for a decade, and Blurstem was born as a piano-centric offshoot of the project. 

He and his wife were gifted an old spinet piano when they bought a house in 2015. Always slightly out of tune, a little dusty sounding, and very much imperfect, the instrument has its own character. But it wasn’t until Chris cut up an old sweater and taped it to the strings, so as to avoid waking up their children at night, that his love for that character really took form.

Glass Echoes is the Minneapolis duo of Chris Bartels and Ben Noble.

In the midst of exploring a variety of musical styles together, Glass Echoes organically turned into the flagship collaboration between Minneapolis-based songwriters Ben Noble and Chris Bartels. With no regard for sonic boundaries, it became a full creative expression for both of them. Each song, rich in layers, has a unique and experimental character, while still embracing a melodic, familiar tone.

The creative process for their debut album, Breathe, was a growing sonic experiment of layered sounds and melodies. In particular, when it came to vocals, each song - each section, in fact - would be sent back and forth between them, and they'd then take turns layering over harmonies, chopped vocal samples, reversing, printing onto analog tape and slowing the reel-to-reel speed down, drenching in effects, on and on - there were no rules.

This mentality also applied to the instrumentation and production. There are banjos used as percussion, cassette tape loops, random bits of noise and field recordings, analog synthesizer improvisations, looped iPhone recordings of roomy pianos, mid-century out-of-tune chord organs, saxophone atmospheres, and so many more unexpected layers - all living in harmony amongst the layers of melody and rhythm.
