Diffusé pendant plus de cinquante ans (malgré plusieurs interruptions), il est l'un des jeux télévisés français à la plus importante longévité, l'un des programmes français les plus adaptés à l'étranger (même si son concept est inspiré de l'émission italienne Campanile sera (it) diffusée entre 1959 et 1962) et est considéré comme l'un des programmes phares de l'été en France (avec Fort Boyard et La Carte aux trésors).
