Following 2019’s ‘New Atlantis’ LP under his experimental techno alias @Efdemin, Phillip Sollmann’s ‘Monophonie’ is a project dedicated to uniting different strands of utopian music. His approach: combining and recontextualizing rare historical instruments of sonic research of Hermann von Helmholtz (19th century) with the self-designed, microtonal instruments of Harry Partch and metal sound sculptures of Harry Bertoia.

The result is a psychedelic investigation into just intonation – alternative tuning systems that create unique sets of harmonics not found in conventional scales. ‘Monophonie’ recasts these sounds into new rhythmic environments where epic kosmische, polyrhythms, acoustic techno and microtonal glow are interwoven into a rare music.

Over nine tracks, the album explores multiple forms of minimalism, from unwavering repetition to paired-down chords and sparse sonic environments. But it also seeks to expand the sound spectrum of Partch’s custom built organs and melodic percussion instruments as well as Bertoia’s sonambient singing metal rods into an atmospheric otherworldliness.

‘Monophonie’ was first composed in 2016 and premiered at Berlin’s Volksbühne theatre in 2017, before it went on to the renowned Ruhrtriennale and Kampnagel in Hamburg. It was performed by one of Germany’s premier neue musik collectives Ensemble @Musikfabrik together with Sollmann himself on von Helmholtz’s original double siren, with set design by Michael Kleine and wardrobe by Peter Kisur of Honeysuckle Company.

Die aktuelle Sonderfolge des Telekom Electronic Beats Podcasts handelt von der Clubkultur in Krisenzeiten. In diesem Feature führt Podcast Host Gesine Kühne spannende Interviews mit Protagonist*innen der Clubkultur und zeigt auf, wie es den Clubbetreiber*innen und Veranstalter*innen während der Covid-19 Krise geht, was die Politik unternimmt, um die Szene zu unterstützen und welche Rolle die Clubcommission spielt. Diese Folge zeigt ebenfalls, wie wichtig der Zusammenhalt der Akteur*innen der Clubkultur in diesen Zeiten ist. Sebastian Riedel, Besitzer des Berliner Clubs Ritter Butzke, erzählt, dass er trotz hoher Kosten und wenigen Einnahmen positiv gestimmt ist. Er möchte sich nicht dem Virus hingeben und fordert deshalb deutlich mehr Unterstützung aus der Politik, als aktuell geboten wird. Pamela Schobeß ist Vorsitzende der Clubcommission, der Interessensvertretung für Clubs, Veranstalter*innen und Kollektive. Gemeinsam mit vielen Clubs gründete sie zu Beginn der Krise die Initiative United We Stream, einen Livestream, der über Spenden den Erhalt der Berliner Clubszene sichern soll. Auch ihr machen die Perspektivlosigkeit der Veranstaltungsstätten und die hohen Kosten zu schaffen. Der Grünen Politiker und kulturpolitische Sprecher Georg Kössler liebt Techno und setzt sich für den Erhalt der Clubs ein. Er sieht die Clubkultur nicht nur als wichtigen wirtschaftlichen Faktor für Berlin, sondern versteht auch, dass Räume für Minderheitsgruppen verloren gehen könnten und die Stadt ihre Diversität verliert, wenn Clubbetreiber*innen ihre Rechnungen nicht mehr zahlen können. Er erklärt, wie und an welcher Stelle die Politik unterstützen will und muss. Wie neue Club-Konzepte aussehen könnten, welche Lücke die fehlende Clubkultur hinterlässt und welche Schwierigkeiten sich bei der Nutzung von Freiflächen ergeben, erzählen die Protagonist*innen im Podcast.

Clubkultur in Krisenzeiten – ein Podcast Feature

In der aktuellen Folge des Telekom Electronic Beats Podcast spricht Podcast Host Jakob Thoene mit DJ und Veranstalterin Sedef Adasi. Die gebürtige Augsburgerin mit türkischen Wurzeln erzählt im Podcast-Interview von ihrer sehr frühen Leidenschaft zur Musik. Als Fünfzehnjährige legte sie auf dem Geburtstag ihrer Schwester zum ersten Mal auf und erstellte erste eigene Mixtapes. Von da an nahm die DJ-Karriere ihren Lauf. Seit einigen Jahren ist Adasi als Resident im Münchener Blitz Club aktiv und wird auch international viel gebucht. Trotz der vielen Reisen bleibt sie ihrer Heimat Augsburg treu. Um dort neue Räume zur Entfaltung zu schaffen, gründete sie ihre Partyreihe HAMAM Nights im City Club Augsburg. Adasi möchte bei ihren Partys Kulturen verbinden und Grenzen überwinden. Sie achtet bei den HAMAM Nights besonders auf Gastfreundschaft und das Wohlergehen der DJs und Gäste. Im Podcast erzählt sie, wodurch sie sich dabei inspirieren lässt, was Gastfreundschaft für sie bedeutet und mit welchen Ritualen sie die Gäste willkommen heißt. Die junge DJ spricht über die coronabedingten Clubschließungen, Sicherheit und das Feiern mit Maske und bedauert die aktuellen Einschränkungen. Gleichzeitig sieht sie in der Krise eine Chance für alle Clubkultur-Protagonist*innen, um wieder zusammenzufinden und zusammenzuhalten.

Also resident of the well-known Kwartz Club in Nice and curator of his own parties "JC Laurent Invites" and "Dance To Resist", where he has shared his musical universe with great artists such as Adiel, Lucy, Lewis Fautzi, Shlømo, Nur Jaber and many others.
