HSR 063: My Love For U [Deep House & Melodic]

✈ To celebrate this new episode, we are proud and delighted to host such an iconic figure from the Detroit Techno scene : DJ ROLANDO (R3 Roland Rocha Records / Ostgut Ton).

Rolando grew up in south west Detroit, a Hispanic district, he was heavily influenced by his cultural Latin rhythms and percussion. Inspired from an early age by his musician father, he pursued his own interest in music and became well known and respected within the community. It was later when he heard Jeff Mills in 1985 as "The Wizard" that he discovered the innovative sounds of Techno. Through a mutual friend he was introduced to Mike Banks and joined Underground Resistance in 1994. 

In 1999 'Knights of The Jaguar' although not Rolando's first release on UR turned perceptions of Techno on their head, breaking into other genres of dance music and becoming a classic in the boxes of DJs such as Tenaglia, Morillo, Oakenfold, and Gilles Peterson. The track has a long legacy of reworking and lives on fifteen years later inspiring audiences from all genres. 

As of November 2004, Rolando left both Underground Resistance and his Los Hermanos project behind. 

2014 Rolando has launched his own label R3 (Roland Rocha Records) and will exclusively release his own music on his label. 

Rolando now a Dj for almost thirty years continues to work internationally as a Dj and continues to hold a residency at the notorious and enigmatic Berlin club Berghain.

All Vinyl Techno Mix (11.14.2024)

This is a vinyl mix containing 30 out of the 49 of the records I acquired in 2024.

Looking over those 49 records, I will say that I have doubled down on the dubby rhythms, totally neglected the UK sound and stayed strong on the trippy techno buzz. In general, I am seeking out more stripped back minimal tracks, be that of house or techno, and I do not entertain as much "aggressive" music as I used to (except in the live setting).

My favourite record from this year might be Hess & Fürstenberg - Campfire Dialogue on Echocord Color, of which both sides were included in this mix. These tracks make for great transitions up and down in tempo and atmosphere.

In terms of my Plattenladen habits - Hard Wax and Audio In reign supreme 👑

Easter Hypnotic Techno Mix 2025

Here at AIR, we kicked off festival season in with Sonar Lisboa, the little sister to the famed Barcelona festival, which took place in early April this year and featured acts like Max Cooper, Jennifer Cardini, Juliana Huxtable, and this month’s esteemed guest, @MarcelDettmann.

A techno veteran whose name is synonymous with big room sound, Marcel recently debuted a new live set, his first ever foray into live performance, the result of a pandemic spent toiling away in the studio and crafting his landmark album Fear of Programming, which formed the foundation for his live act. At Sonar Lisboa, he presented a new version of his project, which he calls My Own Shadow, a mix of his own productions, field recordings, vocal elements, and on the fly craftsmanship.

Marcel and I sat down together in Lisbon to discuss his new live set and the creativity behind it, and how his musical and personal life is shifting over years. A big thanks to the team at Sonar Lisboa for the invite to this year’s edition!

Idea of Electronic Music fascinated him when he was 17 yrs. old (2000). Browsing the internet helped him to discover the first contacts with this kind of music. At the beginning He tried to compose music in trackers etc. 

He spent a lot of time trying to find interesting sites related to electronic music. Thinnerism (era of netlabels) and Epitonic was the first spot where He could listen to tracks from Benfay, Christian Bloch, Curse, Eloi Brunelle, Paul Keeley, Pheek, Mateo Murphy and more & from Epitonic - Morgan Page, Denver McCarthy, Readymade, Ben Neville, Dark Boogie, Sutekh.

In 2003, He listened many various sets, finded tracklists but wanted more informations about releases. There happened changes in his production. The style which he enjoyed and took root in it was "minimal". 

Therefore he love details in electronic music connected and oscillates between styles like techno, rave, acid, break, disco, newave, synth. Some samples of his work you can listen on this web. He started djing in 2005 when he bought his first vinyls (It was pleasure time).

Rivendel is part of scene - predominantly formed in Brno / Czech Republic. In past he was promoter of Le.Clic:Electronique and the resident of Clickinq. During years he passed such parties as Kl:ka, Magion (Fleda), Bubbles, Clicktime and open airs: Shotgun Festival (@shtgnfestival operated by @mooris), Hrachovka, Suncastle, DanceValley (Drahany by @carl-king), Rosnička (@festivalrosnicka). He participated in Perpetuum's Electronic on tuesdays & Café Sklenick (era of Click Joe matador alias Pepi Muah aka møreti @twomoretime) and era of Vibe (now defunct but pleasant time in the beginning. Nowdays surfing the waves of bar Anoda+ (@anoda-bar) or Pul.Pit club.

His love to the electronic music is ploughed by playing with synths, sampler & MIDI controller for new founded label Mångsidig Records (@mangsidigrecords). The other possibility how he can express his sound feelings everytime. 

Actually he mainly plays in club scene of Brno (under enthusiast group Inkwell Tone w/ @7om45) in various sound colours which electronic music gives with his combined dj live set (composition of various tracks, parts, synthesizers or samplers & finger drumming - all it transformed into a story).

Boris, the long-standing Berghain resident, is deeply committed to the captivating magic that unfolds on the dance floor. Renowned for his extended, scorching techno closing sets, Boris is one of the most well-versed and dedicated protagonists in Berlin's vibrant queer electronic scene. However, to pigeonhole Boris only to Berlin would be doing him a disservice. In fact, his visits to legendary clubs like Paradise Garage and the Loft in New York City have left an indelible mark on his persona and DJ style.
